Fantastic Visual aid
The Beginner's French Dictionary is designed for the true novice. If you are just starting out or getting a refresher course, then this book is excellent tool to increase your knowledge. It is the perfect size to carry on the bus or read at your desk at work (so you'll have no excuses for using it). Primarily it is a dictionary for reference, but it also serves as a great vocabulary builder. The use of whimsical illustrations add humour ensuring you'll memorise the correct language in the correct context. Overall I recommend this as a great resource for teaching yourself the basics of French.

Beautiful
Francoise Sagan's sublime second outing captures the essence of love. It is the tale of Dominique, a young French woman, who's honest assessment of her life leads to the realisation that feelings for her current boyfriend are only that of fondness, not love. An encounter with her boyfriend's uncle unfolds into new love, friendships and understanding.
A beautiful, somewhat sad piece, with the flowing charm of Sagan's previous work, Bonjour Tristesse. Perceptive and enchanting, Mlle Sagan has produced a book that has captured, as well as anyone ever has, love through the eyes of youth.

Engaging, detailed overview
This series of interviews gives a lively introduction to the works by the West Indian writer from the French island of Guadeloupe. Biographical details as well as political observations contribute to the understanding of Condé's works. I have used it as a launch pad to Caribbean literature written in French.

Dominique: Analysis of an Adolescent,
Published in Hardcover by E P Dutton (1973)
Author: FranCoise Marette Dolto
Amazon base price: $8.95
Used price: $30.00
Average review score:

Not at all easy to read for a parent
Very powerful stuff! For those of you who are not familar with Dolto, let me tell you she is very famous in France (this will turn off those that need to be). One must understand and accept Freud and psychotherapy before even considering the book. Otherwise it will be a waste. Being midwestern, it will never be discussed here.

The case study is really comprehensive, almost unbelievable unless you have witnessed the effects of psychoanalysis in someone's life.

For a parent, it is a stunning reminder that simply being there for a child is NOT necessarily good for them. One must understand themselves and the process of development (even the arrested process into adulthood). The effects of siblings, parents, symbolism and of course imaginery and identification is absolutely profound.

Cannot wait to find more Englisg versions of her work.

The guide for the ultimate bouldering destination!
Well, what can I say, Fontainebleau is the world's premier bouldering destination. There are thousands of beautiful sandstone boulders strewn through the forests south of Paris and Whether you boulder V0- or V12 (~5a to 8a+) there are literally thousands of great problems for you to do. Go there or be square!

This is really the only guide you'll probably ever need whether you plan on visiting for a day, week, month, or dare I say lifetime.

Because of the complexity of the forest in general and problems inparticular (There are about 3000 problems mapped by this guide!!!) it would be easy to create a guide that was nearly useless. The Montchaussé's have done a great job to cut the areas into digestible chunks. Moreover they've tailored the book so that almost whatever length of time you're visiting for and whatever skill level you climb at, it will be extremely useful for locating climbs for you to try. The map graphics are well conceived and easy to use, something like a treasure hunt really!

The book is organized primarily by "circuits" which were first created in the 1940's by mountaineers who wanted a way to train for routes. A circuit is a group of problems forming a "trail" that are roughly the same difficulty. Generally a circuit will have about 40 problems in it and there are over 200 of these circuits today ranging in difficulty from childrens to elite. This book covers over 100 of them. There are also "off-circuit" problems which are generally very hard classics. Lists of specific types of problems (traverses, problems to improve balance & footwork, and suggested problems to work through grades) compliment the circuit maps. There are also sections and blurbs of history and local color that you can read in-between attempts or while relaxing with a glass of wine!

What's missing? Not much, some index of super-classic must do problems would be nice, but then again most of the problems are at least interesting, or would be moderately classic at most areas in the US... A map of Gites and to the Carrefour (supermarket ...) would be nice. I finally did figure out how to get there...mmmm Yum, stinky cheese and great wine!

Frances Francoise and what led up to 911

A real eye opening adventure
This is a book that both kids and adults can enjoy. A suburban kid befriends a homeless kid in Grand Central and they take a train ride out of the city for quite an adventure. It was fascinating enough that I almost read it thru in one sitting. I didn't want to put it down. Keep an open mind and you'll see a clear perspective. Forget all the stereotypes you've learned and have been forced to believe thru tradition and "family values". It reveals some reasons why we believe differently than our neighbors. It is right on target and reminds us to continue questioning--even authority. Change can happen for the better and this book proves that all it takes is one person.

Françoise Sagan: Une Conscience de Femme Refoulée
Published in Hardcover by Peter Lang Publishing (01 August, 2000)
Author: Nathalie Morello
Amazon base price: $57.95
Used price: $46.36
Average review score:

A Real Gem for Sagan Fans
Morello divides Sagan's writing into three distinct periods (early, middle, late) and provides an original and insightful critical analysis of her entire body of writing, with the exception of her plays and with an intense focus on the novel. While exploring common structures, themes, and details that are UNIQUE to Sagan, Morello demonstrates the author's significant yet too often criticized and forgotten "place" among the women writers of France. The text has been a very valuable critical source of information and is one of VERY FEW publications available that explores Sagan's writing with such depth and clarity.
