The French Wars of Religion: Selected Documents (Documents in History Series)
Published in Hardcover by Palgrave Macmillan (1998)
Author: David Potter
Amazon base price: $59.95
Average review score:

Not for experts only
The author has translated the key French texts of the period into modern English (and thankfully removed some of the annoying flowery language of the time). Texts are grouped into chronological periods and each period has a lucid introduction summarizing the events of the period.
This book is intended for those who really want to DIG into the period.

I Hauled These Mountains In Here
This out of print book is a facinating story of the settlement of the Colorado Rockies. It details the freight wagons role in carrying supplies to mining camps from the rail head. The book is full of personal interest stories that both inform and facinate.

Indian Voices of the Great War: Solders' Letters, 1914-18
Published in Hardcover by Palgrave Macmillan (1999)
Author: David E. Omissi
Amazon base price: $75.00

WW1--an unfamiliar view
This book is a collection of letters between Indian soldiers and their families in the First World War, translated into English from the various languages in which they were originally written. Many thousands of soldiers from what was then the British Empire fought for the Allies in WW1, and a large number of them came from India--Hindus, Sikhs and Muslims. They had enlisted for traditional warfare in South Asia, and nothing could have prepared them for what they found when they arrived in the trenches of the Western Front. Their accounts of their experiences are fascinating, powerful and moving. David Omissi, the editor, provides an excellent introduction and gives useful background information. I strongly recommend this book.

Most readable and concise bio on Napoleon.
Easy to read with excellent illustrations from author's personal collection. Knowledge of detail very impressive.Highly recommended for excellent overview of this most fascinating historical figure. Col. Floyd McRae, USAF, Ret., Napoleonic Alliance.

A veritable tour de force! A most impressive accomplishment!
It is so difficult to say something new and original about Napoleon, but in Napoleon's Road to Glory David Markham has given the man and the events a totally original and new spin that is a veritable tour de force. His prose is exciting, like bursts of gunfire, on the run, rather than the long-winded orations too often found in historical writing. The book is well-written, well-researched and especially easy to read. It sounds like a pleasant conversation between friends and not thunder and lightening from a pulpit! Markham knows how to keep his audience's attention and the story flows smoothly without the usual ups and downs. He asks the right questions and gives excellent answers and explanations. Napoleon's Road to Glory is a most impressive accomplishment!

Offenbach : ou, Le rire en musique

THE KING OF OF FRENCH OPERETTA
This is an excellent overview of OFFENBACH'S life and works, focusing on his best operettas that are the objects of a good analysis.Like all great composers of the past,OFFENBACH needs to be replaced in his original context to be fully appreciated. What you learn is that he was a family man who loved his children. He was also a composer who had many parallels with ROSSINI;both were considered bouffons and desperetately wanted to be taken seriously as composers. There are pictures of HORTENSE SCHNEIDER who created many roles and a few of him as well.OFFENBACH was a favorite victim of the caricaturistes of his time.He was also in a way a feminist before his time, because he created strong characters for women. In all, this is a usefull book, worth reading.

A Godsend for people with no sense of direction
I purchased this book prior to my trip to Paris. It contains detailed maps for most of popular areas of Paris, and also includes a little bit of information about the famous landmarks. I carried this book with me everywhere and it helped tremendously in finding every address I was looking for. Another nice thing about it is that it is small and easy to tote around. A must for anyone who gets lost easily!
