Great Guide
Although a little weak with maps of the whole region(Carcarsonne and surrounding areas were for some reason left out completely), the guide is a fascinating journey with great tidbits and helpful hints. Restaurants guide and touring tips were particularly helpful and our sampling indicated that the author knew his material well.

Cuts through the cliches
The Cote d'Azur is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. As such, I was not expecting to find a guidebook which would add much to what has, over time, become common knowledge about the region (beautiful people, chic casinos, jet setting etc). David Burke's book, however, was a revelation. The author has obviously done his research, producing a guide which is short on cliche and long on detail and other useful information. Burke has tried to point the reader to the lesser-known delights of the Cote d'Azur, while at the same time not neglecting the old favourites. I presume that the same is true for the other regions covered in the guide. This is a book for romantics and explorers alike.

Vivid descriptions support colorful photographs
David Burke guides the traveller from Monaco to Perpignan. My trip remained inscribed in the Cote D'Azur. I stayed near Fayence, in the mountains an hour north Cannes for 10 days. I was able to visit many of the areas Burke reviewed and always found his reviews to be accurate. One excellent restaurant in Nice he recommended was Merenda a "tiny hole-in-the-wall" run by chef Dominique Le Stanc who left his post at the Michelin 2-star Le Chantecler. Throughout all of the towns he reviews he points you out to little treasures like Merenda.

The local histories and photographs got me started on my trip well before I left New York. The anticipation carried over into an eagerness to explore the country side. I'll be going back to Provence and Lanquedoc with this book in hand.

Great for return trips to Paris as well!
I hadn't planned on buying another Paris guidebook, since I've been to Paris twice before, but as I was leafing through the Unofficial Guide to Paris (looking for a particular piece of information), I realized how much information this book contained that was different from other guidebooks. So I broke down and bought it! I really appreciate the perspective of the authors, who have written the book for people who are somewhat price-conscious and perhaps looking for some Parisian experiences that may be slightly off the beaten path. I particularly like the book's organization and the authors' practical insights. I like it when guidebook authors actually offer opinions and don't just list information that may turn out to be a poor choice. Well done!

Excellent Guide for all Travelers to Paris, Old and New
As a Paris veteran I was pleased to pick up and read an excellent Paris guide written for the everyday traveller. Applefield and Sehlinger have proven to understand the moderate cost traveller more then any other guide book currently on the market. This, and their ability to educate the novice and amuse the Paris regular proves they have written this for everyone. The advice is useful and to the point, while not being from the USA (Canada to be exact) I can appreciate the advice given to the general readers. Very informative and an excellent buy, worth every penny.

The best guidebook to Paris
This book is full of practical information on everything from planning your trip to cultural customs. It contains just the information a first-time traveller to Paris needs to know, but also has useful information for the more experienced. It is also an entertaining read. By far the best guidebook to Paris I have seen.

A great gift book
I read The Acrobat and The Angel to my 3 year old daughter last night. It moved me to take action. 1)I am sending the book today to my best friend in Texas who has just lost a close family member. I hope it will help heal her heart. 2) I am getting my own copy of the book (we had gotten it from our library). and 3) I am going to tell lots of folks about the book. The Shannon brothers are wonderful. Both the story and the illustrations are touching. I dug in to all the illustrations to see the symbols used in the frames for each page - very telling! I also noted the two pages without frames and thought about what David Shannon was saying, putting his drawings there without "limits". Get it! Read it! Give it!

Beautiful! For adults and children alike.
My 6 year old daughter recieved this book for christmas and as a rule, I try to read each book myself, before reading it to her. Well, being the sensitive kind, I cried...twice! Please, don't NOT get this book, thinking that it is too sad. My daughter loved it! And she did not cry, but more importantly she asked questions about Pequele's life. (ie: "What is the plague?", and "Why was that monk mean to Pequele?", "Is Pequele an angel now?". This opened doors for me, on subjects that every child eventually arrives at. I feel that this book touches more than the heart. It tells a child that he/she can endure through even the hardest of times. It shows them that, even though there is death, there is learning. I also felt that it was more spiritual than it was religious. To me, this is very important, in showing the world to my very observant 6 year old. Trully deep.

A Creative Author
In all honesty, i can't say that I've read this book yet. But I have read some other short work by this author. Axe is a man with unique perspectives on things and a capacity to highlight the boundless joys and confounding sorrows of life.

This is the wrong edition.
Please do not order the iUniverse edition of Anywhere & Anything. If you are interested in my work, kindly order the more recent Trafford edition with the innovative cover artwork by Brian Ground. Thanks.

Cancan

FILLING A GAP
Possibly the Can Can is the least documented of all Art Forms with at the moment just one book and only available as an import here in England. There is also a total lack of video material the nearest being the film THE MERRY WIDOW BALLET,for which I created a special photo album along with all my others on a communities page.
Can Can is all about pictures and this book has plenty.
Now with the new MOULIN ROUGE film on release this book should stand an even better chance.
But a price of £27 here in England is not going to attract many potential customers

A "Kicky" History of the World's Sexiest Dance.
A true labor of love, Price's book combines thorough research with light-hearted, affectionate prose to trace the evolution of the cancan and its impact on female empowerment, shifting sexual roles, and even ladies' underwear. Throw in never-before-seen photos and illustrations, and what you have is incontrovertible proof that the cancan may be the most fun you can have with your clothes on...

Corsica: The Rough Guide (2nd Ed)(Rough Guides)

very useful and intersting
I travelled Corsica with a rented car. The book gave me almost all I needed - information about the atractions, historical background, cultural interesting articles, and tips about hotels etc... The tourist information offices know very little how to help tourists - with this book they are almost not needed.

You have no other choice - buy it!
How many other guides to Corsica aimed at independent travellers, written in English can you name? Yes, Corsica is covered in each and every guide to France as well, but those 20 or so pages in a 500-pages book aren't what you really want, are they? It would be unfair to say though that Corsica: The Rough Guide is the best one simply because it's also the only one -- both the authors and the editorial staff has done a pretty decent job on this one. Recommended.

Jean-Luc Godard: Interviews (Conversations With Filmmakers Series)
Published in Hardcover by Univ Pr of Mississippi (1998)
Authors: Jean Luc Godard, David Sterritt, and Jean Lu Godard
Amazon base price: $45.00
Average review score:

is it mere coincidence that godard starts with god?
i can very simply sum up how i feel about this title: one cannot possibly go wrong with the words straight from jean-luc "cinema" godard's mouth. made up of interviews with godard over the decades of his career, this book illuminates godard's various phases and his astounding ideas on cinema and art and life in general. the man is an amazing artist, and if you are at all familiar with his films, you owe it to yourself to read some of what he has to say. his insight into filmmaking and his personal output greatly increases any understanding of his cinematic works. i recommend this book to any student of cinema, academic or just curious, or to anyone who has ever watched a godard film and still had many questions after the screen turned dark. and of course, if you're a godard nut like myself, you should buy this right now and thank me later; this is required reading for godard devotees.

A great view into the mind of Cinema's premiere genius.
Along with GODARD ON GODARD, this book is a must-have for any serious cinema affecionado. The interviews with Jean-Luc Godard are relevatory and thought provoking, and are essential to read alongside viewing his films. It covers his work from his (more popular) early/mid-sixties films through his video work in the eighties and back to his films of the nineties. Highest recommendation.

Pack Your Bags and Get Over There!
The Lonely Planet guides are excellent for any locale..but this edition (covering Italy, Spain, Greece, France, Portugal and even Morocco) is a must-read for the quintessential backpacker jumping on a plane for Europa. These guides excel at recommending lodging of many price ranges (from youth hostels to 5-star hotels) and meal choices of the same range (excellent recommendation for outdoor markets.."buy a loaf of bread, a block of cheese and a bottle of wine here"..which is a plus as many guides catering to this area focus on only older travels with large budgets..or persons seeking to spend only a dollar a day or some insanity..it's always good to have the most information possible..and it's included here. Entertainments ideas from free plaza and park visiting to museums, discotechqes, architecture, boat rides etc. etc. are included..good for young and old. It even lists culture-sensitve information such as appropriate dress for visiting churches and monasteries as well as travel-safe tips for women. Book your Eurorail pass and get going.

Mediterranea Europe on a shoestring is quite fascinating!
Lonely Planet has great books and this one certainly was. It's very thorough and tells alot about things that interest travellers. They are up to date and tell you the pros and cons of the different countries. I liked it alot and I know that other people will too.

The Murder of Napoleon

A Famous Death Reexamined
The infamous Napoleon Bonaparte died while imprisoned on the island of St. Helena. Until very recently, it was widely believed that he died of stomach cancer, which was prevalent in his family.

This book investigates the case made by Swedish dentist Dr. Sten Forshufvud. After learning the details of Napoleon's final days, Dr. Forshufvud began to suspect arsenic poisoning. Along with Ben Weider, the two delved into sources of available information regarding Napoleon, his imprisonment and those close to him. The authors present a very likely scenario of what really happened based on results of this investigation, along with an analysis of Napoleon's hair confirming arsenic poisoning.

Despite the hair analysis, the case is not completely solved, as Napoleon's final moments on his death bed did not indicate arsenic poisoning. Instead, the authors argue that arsenic was used to make Napoleon ill and then another method was used to finish him off. A likely suspect to the murder as well as a motive are also named.

This is a fascinating book for anyone interested in European history during a turbulent time.

Highly interesting, challenging and moving!
This book is one of the best I've ever read about Napoleon's death. I came by this book during my recent visit of the United States. I was discussing history and unsolved mysteries with a relative of mine when he introduced me to the book. He told me that for the first time a researcher had decided to challenge all the known theories about Napoleon's death. And what a challenge!! According to the author the great Emperor had been poisoned by arsenic during his exile in Saint Hélène. At first I was quite sceptical. Could that be the solution of this mystery? However, the more I read the more I was convinced by the author's argument and by the researcher thourough 'enquête'. Although we might not agree with the identity of the murderer we can't not sweep aside such scientific facts. The book is a real page-turner and I rest assure that all the fans of the subject (and even those merely interested by the scientific aspect of the theory) will find this book extremely interesting and disturbing (in a positive way, of course).

What would I have done without it??
Let's just say, I don't even like to think what would have happened if I hadn't had this book when I moved to Paris. The format and writing makes it a pleasure to read. People ask me about living in France and I just tell them to read this book. I wish there were one like it for Strasbourg!

Paris Inside and Out
This book is clearly written by someone who knows! Appelfield speaks to the American with a firsthand account of the French experience, and with humor to boot. Many references to websites and other materials make this book a must have, especially for the potential expat.
