Life Saving
I am an RN with Post-Polio Syndrome and live in rural Arkansas. I did an in-service training on Post-Polio Syndrome for our small regional hospital and spent weeks accumulatiing research for the training. Then I ordered the "Polio Paradox". It contained all of the research material I had spent so much time collecting and much, much more. The article on "polio belly" was informative and well-written. I shared it with the gastroenterologist that is treating my "polio belly" and he was very interested. He had treated a number of folks with PPS and wanted to know the etiology behind the problems they were having.

Dr. Bruno has spent years conducting research, and taking surveys, and histories of polio survivors. His book presents this material in a non-threatening, readable way, yet clearly identifies treatment protocol and lifestyle options for the survivor and for the medical professional they deal with.

Most of us with Post-Polio Syndrome are acutely familiar with our health issues but resistant to lifestyle changes. Dr. Bruno helps with the choices we must make to continue to be independent, and he does it in a gently yet persuasive manner.

Dr. Bruno uses a wheelchair himself, though not as a result of polio. He is intimately aquainted with the challenges of disability and sensitive to the emotional needs of his readers.

Read it.............it might save your life!

Another good book on Post Polio Syndrome!
This is a very interesting book about PPS. Dr. Bruno has a great deal of experience with the subject and explains it all so very well. I am pleased that he addresses, as a part of the whole equation, the subject of nutrition as it pertains to people with a chronic condition, like PPS. He presents easy to understand information on the importance of protein as well as carbohydrates and fats. As a nutritionist, I know how important it is to eat well to get all the nutrients a polio-stressed body needs. I am glad he explains this, plus much more, in the Polio Paradox. It is must reading for anyone who had Polio, whether or not they have the affer-effects that so many of us are experiencing.

FINALLY someone who knows has written a book about Post-Pol
THE POLIO PARADOX is the first book about and for polio survivors and the medical community. As a medical caregiver you will be aghast at what important polio and post-polio clinical information was -- and still is -- being withheld from your medical training. As a polio survivor you will cry, laugh, and finally come to realize with every loving polio paradox Dr. Bruno reveals that we can learn to live within our NEW abilities.

A lifechanging and incredibly coming of age story
ElfQuest impacted my life in ways I'll probably never be able to comprehend. I first read the comics that make up this graphic novel when I was 13, and I was hooked. I collected all the reprints of the original series I could find, and then found my way to more. This story of love, honour, betrayal, and being one with nature is a must-read for anyone from 8-80. If you find comic books a little daunting and/or simplistic, there are novels as well. Perhaps read those and then come back to the comics and allow them to fill in the blanks. A marvellous gift for a creative kid or an adult who hasn't lost that gleam in their eye.

An excellent read for anyone of all ages
Elfquest - Fire and Flight has to be one of my favourite fantasy books that I have read. At first I was skeptical about reading a novel based on comics, and it has been sitting on my shelf for about 2 years before I thought about reading it. At first I thought it was very childish and rather silly but after the part about the meeting with the trolls, I started to get into the story. To summarise the plot as simply as possible, the story is basically about a group of elves (Wolfriders), driven from the forest after it has been destroyed by humans, and their journey across a desert to a place known as Sorrow's End, which is inhabited by another group of elves. There Cutter, the leader of the Wolfriders, meets Leetah, a healer from Sorrow's End and they know each other through what the elves call "Recognition".(Read the book to find out about this!). An elf, called Rayek, who is in love with Leetah, is hateful of Cutter and is jealous of him.

I really enjoyed how the authors drew out all the characters, especially Cutter and Leetah, and because of this and the simplicity of the story, one can guess how the story would evolve and pan out as one can guess how the characters would behave. That is not a bad thing. Believe me. Even though the story is short, it is an engrossing and entertaining read.

I believe the reason why I liked this book a lot has to deal with the emotions and feelings the Wolfriders undergo, especially the part where they travel through the desert. We have Cutter trying his best as leader trying to hold his tribe of Wolfriders together, Skywise and his trust in the "magical stone" and the love Nightfall has for Redlance, and the anguish of the elves and wolves. All the emotions are portrayed briefly and powerfully. You see many examples of the good and bad side of elven nature which can easily be translated into our lives and which makes the reader feel good all over.
I recommend this story/comic to anyone who wants to read an inspiring story, abut the strength of the elven (human) spirit and how love overcomes all.

Excellent!
I bought this one for my 9 year old son who loved it but ended up reading it myself. I plan on buying all of them!

An amazing storyline with even better artwork
I got this book with 3 other graphic novels and after reading this i saw no reson to even read the other books again. This story will suck you in and never let you out. It will move you heart and soul. With almost human emotions this story will make you laugh cry and jump with joy. I would recommend this to anyone who likes good art with great story.

The most enthralling story of elves I have ever read!
I saw my first ElfQuest book when I was nine years old, and was immediately entranced by those beautiful elves on the cover. I'd never seen anything like them! They were so magical! But, alas, I was only a child, and had no money, and my parents didn't seem to understand that I HAD to have those books! So, I contented myself with looking at the elves whenever I went into the bookstore instead. But then, quite suddenly, the bookstore decided not to carry them anymore, and I never saw those beautiful elves again.

But now, twelve years later, I was startled to see some familiar-looking elves on a shelf in that self-same store. Could it really be? After so many years? Yes! It was those same magical elves, whom after all this time I have never forgotten, and I snatched up the book before it could vanish again, hardly daring to believe that I would now get to read the story of the Wolfriders.

"Fire and Flight" is a very well-written and beautifully drawn graphic novel.

wow
I have read every elfquest book that I can get my hands on and I have to say that book one is my favourite. The artwork and the story are beautiful and I re-read them every chance I get. (My copies are starting to wear out). I have books one through seven and I am looking for book eight. Preferably a color hard cover one. I hope it will continue in the spirit of the true elfquest books. Anyone with Info. email me

Richard Halliburton's Complete Book of Marvels

Richard Halliburton opened new worlds to me
Richard Halliburtons Book of Marvels was my constant childhood companion. It shared long, lazy hot summer days in a clothes line blanket tent with me and cuddled under blankets with me on cold winter nights. I took it everywhere and in return it opened my midwestern childs eyes to all the wonders of the world. We climbed mountains and the pyramids of Egypt and Mexico. We cried at the death of Mumtaz Mahel and floated in the Great Salt Lake. WE gaped in awe at the Clossal of Rhodes, and excavated ancient Pompei. Richard Halliburton allowed me to experience with him every adventure he ever had and a life long search for further knowledge was born. Every child in the world should experience this magic carpet ride to wild and exotic places. I want a copy to share with my grandchildren so they too may have the company of this wonderful human being.

Much more than the best travel book I ever read.
There's not a lot to add to the previous reviews. I too discovered the book as a young adolescent (because I am from Halliburton's home town of Memphis, Tennessee) and read it as a bedtime book to my son. It's much more than a travel book because Halliburton not only gives his wonderful descriptions and pictures of marvelous places all over the world but also his infectious sense of romance and wonder. My most memorable chapters, swimming in the forbidden pool at the Taj Mahal and diving into the sacrificial pit at Chichen Itza, are prime examples of the daring and adventuresome approach to life that should make this book required reading in today's schools. The fact that it is not, and is even out of print today, seems to me a sad reflection of our society's choice of conformity and routine over risk taking and intellectual curiosity.

An Uplifting, Life-changing Book
In 60 years of life, there are precious few books that I have read that evoke the images drawn linguistically by Halliburton. As a boy, lost in the World of Halliburton's experiences, I dreamed then of seeing everything that he described and feeling the awe that he did so long ago.

I have been fortunate to travel all over the World and have indeed seen much of what he did and I never fail to draw to mind the passages of his books and it gives me added pleasure. This is a book for the ages. Mandatory reading for the children of the millenium. As the World shrinks, it is good to see it in the context of the Book of Marvels and The Royal Road to Romance. I have cherished these books and have recommended them to all who would seek adventure.

So Simple But So True!
I remember reading this book over the course of a few days a couple of years back while I was in Florida on vacation. Since then I have given them as gifts to associates on numerous occasions. The truths held in this book while being so simple in concept reach far into the way successful businesses are run (or should be run) in the new millennium. You need look no further than the list of Fortune 500 companies detailed in this book to find the who's who of the world's most consistently profitable organizations. When I saw that "Contented Cows" had been released in paperback I ordered several copies to give to other managers in my company as well a copy that I can keep on hand for myself. Catlette and Hadden make an excellent point about the power of employee validation. Could it really effect the bottom line that much? Think of the last time your boss patted you on the back on a job well done. How did you feel? Now, multiply that by millions of employees and you can start to see their point. Could the key to success be that simple? Read the book and try it yourself.

Quantitative, yet qualitative employee satisfaction approach
I have read hundreds of management books and found "Contented Cows" to be one of the most enlightening and refreshing, yet statiscally valid approaches to improving performance and productivity through improved employee relations. As a fellow management consultant, I like the way this book depicts the importance of creating a "healthy" environment starting at the top of the organization, yet at the same time showing ways that a front-line manager can make a grass roots change initiative.. I like your "No Excuse" type of mentality. I am a facilitator for accountability at all levels, and this book hits it right on the head. Thanks Richard and Bill for the fascinating and effective ways in which you present your methodologies for change.

These cows make horse sense
This book makes the case once and for all - when you treat your employees right, you make more money.

Catlette and Hadden have done a masterful job of looking at the bottom line of companies that do a world class job of taking care of their companies. Then they compare that to companies who don't. The result is very clear. The "contented cow" companies make more money. A lot more.

I like the fact that the book contains that kind of data. But I also like the stories the authors tell which bring the data to life.

The book is a good read, and makes a world of difference around the work place.

This book is written in a great style and reflects the candid, slightly business-irreverant style of the authors. It's no wonder that companies order this book by the box and that companies like Chick-fil-A use it for their training.

O'Kane and his Tang were the best!
A must read for any submarine enthusiast. This book will give any reader a better appreciation for the W.W.II submariner, as well as his contemporary counterpart. O'Kane writes primarily for the submariner (Litany only a submariner would understand in places),but not so much that his book will not be enjoyed by anyone. I had the priveledge to meet the author in 1988, and he is the same man you will come to love and respect through his book. The final chapter of the book will shock and sadden the reader who is unfamiliar with story. The officers and men of Tang: hero's all!

A must for those who want to feel WWII sub warfare!
I have already read this book once and now I am reading it for the second time. Richard O'Kane takes you through the boredom and the intensity of what it was like to serve aboard a WWII submarine.

This book tells the story from beginning to the bitter end of a heroic sub and the men who served in her.

Enthralling;gripping;filled with admiration for O'Kane
As I read this account of the patrols of the U.S.S. Tang, I was there with the gallant skipper and the crew. A powerful story, gripping;filled with the tension that goes with tracking the enemy. You soon realize how courageous the entire crew was and you are also filled with admiration for Commander O'Kane's leadership and seamanship. The ending is so tragic. For several days after finishing the book I was filled with a deep sense of tragedy for its own defective torpedo sank this magnificent sub.A great tale that ends in sorrow.

Medical personnel will note the big gaps, no one else will!
Never mind the huge gaps in medical science, this is still an entertaining story filled with minutae that give it life and breath. You will be there in ancient Rome with Eugeni, in greedy corporate America with Lew, in the Socialist mindset with Semyon, and believe it or not, in the cloistered nunnery with Olava. It is an ensemble cast of seemingly impossible common ground, but Sapir makes their conspiracy entirely believable. I re-read this book about once a year, along with Wilbur Smith's "Sunbird" and Pat Frank's "Alas Babylon". Yep, it's THAT good.

The Far Arena
It is a shame that this book is out of print. I bought and read the book in the early 80's and it is one of the books that I read every so often. It is fascinating in its account of ancient Rome and the gladiators as well as its story of the three individuals involved with Eugeni. I recently saw the movie "Gladiator" and it prompted me to pick up The Far Arena and read it again. I never tire of the story of Eugeni. If you can get your hands on a copy of this book, do so! You can't have mine!

READ THIS BOOK (if you can find it)
Wonderful book, wonderful protaganist in Eugeni, the pragmatic little Roman gladiator who is brought back to life by modern science. He's like a modern-day Dorothy, in a brand new world, and both appalled and fascinated by what he encounters.
I can't believe this book is out of print,...
I also have loaned out copies and never got them back (along with The Sunbird), but luckily still have my original hard copy. If you can find this book, do buy it and do read it!

An Entertaining Novel
I read Ghosts Have I been about 2 years ago, but I recently thought of it and what a great book it was. I am planning on re-reading it as soon as I get a chance to go to the library again. This entertaining book about Blossom Culp was very good but I didn't see much of a plot or problem in the book. I believe that people of all ages would enjoy reading this novel

Better Plot Then The Movie Titanic Had!
I read this book when I was in my early teans and again when I was in my early 20`s...It is a book I intend to read again. This book tells the story of the sinking of the titanic from the eyes of a scared little boy who was traveling in first class, but was abandoned by his selfish parents. It is the story of a lost soul and a girl who has an uncanny ability to talk with the dead...It is a real page turner, and young people will learn as well as be entertained...I highly recomend it for all ages!

Entertaining, good plot line, characters with depth, funny
I have read this book many times over the years, starting when I was about 12 or so. I just reread it this last spring (I just turned 30). Richard Peck is eternal, and this story is one that keeps one riveted and entertained throughout. Never a boring moment, and it is easy to get caught up in the intricate plot line. An original quirk to the Titanic tragedy as well. I recommend this book highly to young adults and adults...a good book to read together with children!

Fact vs Fiction
This is THE definitive Red Sox history. It tells the whole story just as it happened. Of course, for Red Sox fans that is both good and bad. If you want a happier ending, read Bill Lee's The Little Red Sox Book, which changes Red Sox history and provides dozens of happy endings, including Ted Williams killing Hitler with a line drive, Babe staying in Boston and Jackie Robinson joining the Red Sox. I suggest you read them both...one to put you out on the ledge and the other to coax you back in.

BEST RED SOX BOOK EVER!!!!
I have read many books on the Red Sox and this is by far the best one that I have seen.Stout and Johnson have done great research on the subject and take the reader through the long and exasperating history of the Boston American league baseball team as no one has before.I highly recommend this book to Red Sox fans. This book is better than I thought it would be.A must read for all Red Sox fans. The reader will see that alot of what was previously written about the Sox was just myth. The authors do an excellent job of setting the record straight on many key points throughout Red Sox history.

The Trials and Tribulations of Being a Sox Fan
What a sensational book. I have read Red Sox books in the past, and nothing seemed to capture the essence of the ball club's trials and tribulations than Red Sox Century. This book is as tragic as any classic story and examines 100 years of "what ifs." This book leaves no stone unturned and gives fans the ability to learn and love the former players of seasons past. It is the best Red Sox book I have ever read and will give one a deeper appreciation for the organization and it's tragic history. A futher note of excellence for this book are the points the authors make in putting to rest, the "cursed" theory and many other false misconceptions of the organization. It is a tremendous book and is a must read for any diehard Red Sox fan. Hell, it's a must read for anyone who wants to read a good tearjerker...
