An excellent book for little ones
I have a two and a half year old daughter who reads this book along with me (with all the appropriate roars, honks, hisses etc) at least twice every night since I've bought the book. The storyline is simple with bright illustration and very engaging. It would appeal to any little one as they are usually fascinated with animals and love to mimic all the different sounds. I highly recommend this book to parents of young children.

A most excellent book!
We borrowed this book from the library and have had to renew it so many times we have lost count. My son, who is now 21 months old, loves to read it, and can tell you what all of the animal noises' are, so we enjoy many hours of reading it together. I expect my 4 month old daughter to enjoy it just as much when she is old enough.

Computers and Zen in a great mystery
This early Silicon Valley mystery may be the best. Great stuff in Japan too relating Zen to computers. An original book.

Moses Wine Tries To Sell Out
In Roger L. Simon's CALIFORNIA ROLL, Moses Wine, one of my favorite contemporary private eyes, tries to sell out, and he fails miserably. Tulip Computer, hires Moses to head up its security department, but the counter-culture PI remains true to his roots. Simon also presents a terrific detective story here with the murder of a technogenius, a satirical examination of the computer industry, international intrigue, corporate espionage, and a bit of romance. CALIFORNIA ROLL is one Simon's better Wine novels. I wish he'd write them more frequently. I enjoy his perspective on the California social scene. You'll like this book if you enjoy the works of Connelly, Crais, Muller, Grafton, or T. Jefferson Parker.

the ONLY book i have ever recommended to anybody!!!!
This book, and these two authors, were able to explain all of the parts of windows that everybody needs to know! They also took a lot of things that other people had said and proved them to be sheep that follow the Microsoft sheppard. Keep up the good work. P.S. I recommend that you dont bother hitting this book with a hilighter, as I did originally, because after a few days youll notice that your whole book is yellow

Great Book for non-tech types and techies alike.
I found "The Mother of All Windows" books to be some of the most informative 'plain english' "tech" books on the market. My job requires me to understand the underpinnings of Microsoft products such as Windows 95, and now Windows 98 at a deep technical level.

With humor and pizzaz, often missing from technical writings. Mom and her entourage lead you the reader through the often icey landscapes, and steaming jungles of jargon needed to understand a complex operating system.

I completely enjoyed the trip. I hope you will too. Remember, Mom's allways looking out for ya'.

A must-have for gorilla lovers
This is a must have book for anyone who loves gorillas. It chronicles the heartwarming story of a baby gorilla & his family as they travel to their new home showing how they adapt to their new environment. The book starts off with the tale of Cenzoo, the baby gorilla, who was abandoned & near dead. It details his and his families (him & mother, another female, & a silverback male) airplane adventure to their new home in a Denver zoo. The story continues to follow the lives of the gorilla family as they acclimate to their new home. There are many observations about how a gorilla's behavior differs in captivity versus in the wild. I really like how each gorilla's personality traits were described. I truly felt as if I got to know each of the gorillas. Lots of time is also given the plight of the vanishing gorillas & what is being done to help.

Excellent
Absorbing, thought-provoking, informative, well-written! Wish it was longer -- with more details about the author's experience with the gorillas in Rwanda and well as more pictures of the Primate Panorama and Cenzoo's daily activities. I've put a visit to the zoo on my travel list.

A tasty appetizer for David McCullough master work,
Truman. An entertaining one hour speech peppered with anecdotes covering the failures & successes of Truman. There may never have been a person to succeed to the president as unprepared & in such a time of national crises. We were about to invade Japan with perhaps two miilion men & 600,000 casualties. One thing he did know. He could not be Franklin Roosevelt. Nobody could be. He had to be Harry Turman. He knew himself, grew into the job & ranks as one of our near great presidents. Apparently the most important experience of his life was World WarI which he could have avoided in several ways. He found he was brave, he could lead men in adversity & he liked it. He had known disappointments, hated farming, failed as a businessman & was largely ignored as "The Senator from Pendergast." He was honest, stubborn to a fault, loyal, humble but most of all confident in his abilities. You get a flavor of all this in a much too short tape. Read McCullough's "Truman."

A stirring example of character and leadership
This cassette should be compulsory listening for ALL leaders. I have heard it dozens of times and it never fails to keep me on track. McCullough's great voice speaking about the character of a great man has produced the finest short audio tape on leadership that I have ever heard. I bought several hundred copies and gave them to managers. Put the character traits of Truman into today's business world and what an improved world it will be. BUY THIS TAPE!! Listen to it many times. It will have a HUGE effect on your life.

Excellent advice on matters important to today's parents!
Busy parents will find this humorous and easy to read book very helpful. It handles with a "down to earth and get to the point" approach real and everyday challenges which face all families. Separation anxiety, temper tantrums, troubling but common behavior are just some of the issues addressed in a wise and pratical way. This is definitely recommended reading for any parent.

A lucky find for new and old parents
Though I live on the Westside of Los Angeles I often go to the San Fernando Valley and while there pick up a copy of The Warner Center News. I once noticed an ariticle by a Childcare director named Bette Simons that caught my attention. Being both a parent and now a grandparent the title hit my interest. It was called "Discoveries that come from living on the floor" The article so well described the dilemnas and delights that both parents and toddlers experience in this new setting of a childcare facility. I was motivated to seek out Ms Simons articles each time I went to the Valley. Only recently I discovered that articles pertaining to this age group are now published (as of l997). I doubt there is an parent that has not experienced the joys and frustrations of a child's development. I highly prompt parents to grab up a copy. When starting this review I noticed that Ms Simons has 2 other books in print. Good news and I will buy them ASAP.

Captures the dynamic essence of an art style
In 1930, William Van Alen (architect of New York's Chrysler Building) invented his Art Deco design to embody the spirit of his age when art was expected to be higher, faster, and more dynamic than was to be found in any prior age. Superbly illustrated with images drawn from the Christie's archives, and enhanced with commentaries by Michael Jeffery, Simon Andrews, and Nicolette White, Christie's Art Deco is an informative as it is beautiful, complete capturing the dynamic essence of an art style that defined an era with everything from Japanese ceramics to Swiss poster designs to French glass to American architect, and more. Highly recommended for art history students, art deco collectors and connoisseurs, as well as anyone with an eye for enduring beauty, Christie's Art Deco is enriched with collector's tips, a glossary, museum addresses, Christie's addresses, a select bibliography for further study, and a very helpful index.

Wonderful book on Art Deco
Christie's Art Deco, edited by Fiona Gallagher, is an excellent overview of the Art Deco period with highlights of the major designers of each category with innovations in the respective fields of design. It is written in a scholarly narrative text. Categories included are architectural detailing, furniture, glass, ceramics, silver and metalware, jewelry, sculpture, and graphics/posters. It has 192 pages with approximately 120 color photographs and an excellent bibliography given for further research. It is an excellent choice for a wide range of readers with an interest in the decorative arts.

Impressive array of information
The Eichers, et al, have done Civil War buffs a great service with this fabulous piece of research. If you are looking for info on military and/or civilian leaders, this is the best single source yet published. Thanks guys!

A Masterpiece
A major work of awesome proportions! The research, attention to detail and the scholarship that combined to produce this work are beyond measure.

For any serious Civil War buff this book is a "must". There is no area relating to the High Command of either North or South that is not covered in exquisite detail. It contains not only the biographical notes for virtually every major and minor character on both sides, it lists the ranks, date of rank and assignments. Reads like an Officer's Personnel Record, complete with photographs of individuals where available. It is particularly useful in bringing into clear focus the organizational structure, badges of rank and the different departments making up the respective armies.

This is an absolutely invaluable tool for anyone interested in an in-depth source for reference to go hand-in-hand with careful study of the major works on Civil War battles and campaigns.

It should certainly be found on the shelves of any college or university library.

Funny book in very cad taste
Philip Fletcher is in serious trouble. His friend and fellow actor, Seymour Loseby, died suddenly, and a volume of his diaries is missing. Seymour's son, a government minister and rising star in the political establishment, has received a threat to publish its contents unless paid a hundred thousand pounds. He turns to Fletcher to act as go-between.

But the black-hearted actor has powerful reasons of his own to recover the missing volume. Now nearing the end of his career, he hopes not only to get a knighthood out of it from the grateful minister, but to suppress the contents of the missing book, which contained details of Philip's unsavory involvement in a couple of murders.

Philip's knightly quest draws him into a world of transvestite nightclubs and gangsters, and the aging actor has to draw on all his thespian skills, with an assist from blackmail and the occasional murder, to survive.

"The Company of Knaves" contains more than a whiff of the theater's greasepaint, and author Simon Shaw, flings acid-tinged darts thrown with great glee at actors and actresses, entertainers, and just about everything British. Amid this filthy world of cynicism and violence, Fletcher is still a trouper at heart, and the show must go on no matter what.

Brilliant Work of Satire
London actor Philip Fletcher is irate when he learns that his worst nightmare is about to come true. His most despised theatrical rival, Richard Jones, is to be knighted. Philip knows that he does not deserve such an award because he (Phillip) has not received his own knighthood. Surely the crown knows that Philip is superior to Dick and the amoral actor will do anything to insure he gets knighted.

Nigel Loseby, an MP, turns to Philip for help. Apparently, his deceased father's journal, filled with scandalous entries that would make President Clinton blush, is about to be published. Nigel wants the journal back. Philip agrees to obtain the journal, but Nigel must help get him get knighted. Posing as a singing transvestite, Philip begins his journey into the world of S&M, drag queens and transvestites to recover the missing journal.

Like the previous novels in this collection, THE COMPANY OF KNAVES is a very humorous satire that rips asuner the English theatre and award shows, especially the use of knighthoods granted to frivolous individuals. Readers will either love Philip's lack of decency or absolutely loathe the actor. The trek into the seedier side of town will also be dually received by readers depending on their sense of morality. No matter how one might feel about Philip's antics, Simon Shaw has written a clever dark comedy with his latest entry in the Fletcher theatrical crime series.
