Kierkegaard's fans! don't miss this book!
I believe that Dr. Evans has provided us with one of the best secondary books about Kierkegaard! I have been truly benefited in my study through this book. It's a carefully argued and delightfully written book. You can't miss the insights that will benefit you 'existentially' from this book!

A Great Book
This is the story of Germany's great WWI ace Oswald Boelcke. Boelcke developed many of the air combat principles that are still valid today. He was also a great ace himself, shooting down 40 enemy aircraft. Much of the book is made up of letters and diary entries written by Boelcke himself, which makes the book as much autobiograph as biography.

The last chance : the pilots' plot against Göring, 1944-1945
Published in Unknown Binding by Hutchinson ()
Author: Johannes Steinhoff
Amazon base price: $
Used price: $114.45
Average review score:

An important contribution to the last days of the Luftwaffe
In many years of interviews with Steinhoff, it became clear that his insights and recollections regarding the Kommodores Revolt in January 1945 were historically accurate. The other surviving members of the conflict between the elite pilots and Goering collectively agreed with the contents of the book. Hitler's last minute intervention between Galland, Steinhoff, Lutzow, and Goering is detailed and fascinating. The reader will be drawn into the foray behind the scenes, and allowed to witness a different kind of war for survival by the aces fighting for their nation.

The Immigrant's Experience - A good life
I first read this book almost fifty years ago as a teenager. A friend had given a copy to my father as a going away present, when he set out to emigrate to America. Even though my parents were much too late to homestead or farm, this story gave me a clear understanding of the promise of America for the immigrant. The hero of the narrative is a poor day laborer's child on one of the large estates of the Kaiser's Germany. He grows up in a one room cabin, which is shared by the livestock, if any. As a teen he emigrates to America.

He does not find the streets paved with gold. Life is never easy. A son almost dies of diphtheria. Home made carts set to run on the rails, are demolished by trains. Bad years come after good. Hired help is difficult to find. But with hard work, honesty, a devoted wife, and time he builds a good life, a family and farm in Iowa. Nothing like this would have been possible at home.

Richard Trost has given us a clear translation, which lovingly reflects the idealism of the original. He also has given careful attention to Americanizing the frequent north German dialect expressions of the original. Anyone who is interested in the immigrant experience will find this book a must reading. It is also a very enjoyable story.

A Brilliant Book on Lie Groups
I have read this book with great interest. It deals with the theory of Lie groups from the global point of view, not only the usual Lie algebraic treatment. Of particular originality is the theory of orbits for compact groups, an issue with many applications such as the patterns of symmetry breaking in elementary particle physics. I also particularly appreciated the chapter about the Borel-Weil theory of representations which does not seem to be available in textbooks. The style and breadth of the exposition will certainly make it an instant classic, a perfect complement to the Lie algebra texts by Humphreys or Jacobson. I also appreciated the emphasis on the differential geometric aspects of the subject. One regret is that the authors did not delve into the orbit theory of complex Lie groups and the link with geometric invariant theory.

Literary Theory (The Basics)
Published in Library Binding by Routledge (2001)
Author: Johannes Willem Bertens
Amazon base price: $75.00
Average review score:

Highly recommended...
I can't say enough good things about this book and its author, Bertens. We are using this as one of our textbooks in an advanced Contemporary Literary Theory class. The readings that we have to do by literary theorists (Derrida & ilk) are often confusing, but the Bertens book ties everything together in easy-to-understand language. I never approach the book as a "chore," rather, it is a joy. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in a clear, concise, well-written introduction to modern literary theory. It includes such topics as Formalism, Structuralism, Post-Structuralism, Deconstruction, Post-Colonialism, and Feminist Theory, among others.

A Method of Prayer

Authors: Johannes Kelpius and Johannes Kelpuis

Mysticism
Whether Kelpius himself actually wrote this is not confirmable, but it does appear to fit his mystical theology. The work mirrors concepts addressed by Madame Guion, a French mystic, and ideals of Catholic meditative prayer (Teresa of Avila, John of the Cross) Its emphasis on union with God through inner prayer, the types of prayer, etc. are more Catholic in nature than views of the Protestant separatists of Kelpius's day who advocated vocal prayer.... All in all, a handy document and a fascinating bit of publishing history.
