An introduction for the discerning traveller.
Insight guides offer a rich history, political analysis and cultural insight to the countries they cover. By using locally based writers they get the insiders view of what the various camps believe in. For a discerning traveller who wants to know about the country, the people, geography, food, industry etc and for those who wish to travel independently, this is the book to read. It is not tourist guide which says stay here, eat this menu, see this statue. All that is left to the standard tourist guide writers. If you never travel to a country, you can know it through the insight guide. The South African book is no exception and is full of well written and accessible articles, giving you information that you will find invaluable if you travel to the country.

Excellent subject matter coverage
This book should be a must read for all med students as well as clinicians. It provides an unusually precise and clear link between what often appears as "common" symptoms and previously un-discussed causes such as food related chemicals, pesticides, chemical exposures, organic solvents and metals. Having seen many antidotal references in the pop literature to these issues, it is good to finally see an authoritative scientific text on the subject.

Johannes Brahms

The story of the musician who wrote that famous lullaby
This look at Johannes Brahms for the Getting to Know the World's Greatest Composers series is one of Mike Venezia's better efforts at providing not only an entertaining juvenile biography but also an attempt at music appreciation. Unlike his volumes in the Getting to Know the World's Greatest Artists series, where examples of great paintings could be included in the volume, here the author-cartoonist can only mention Brahms's most famous compositions such as "Wiegenlied" (a.k.a. Brahms's Lullaby), Violin Concerto in D Minor, and the Academic Festival Overture. However, this volume, more than the others in the series I have read to date, manages to work in a goodly number of such examples, many of which you can find on a decent collection of the greatest "hits" of Johannes Brahms. I strongly recommend that no child read a biography of a great musician such as this (Brahms was one of the three B's, along with Bach and Beethoven) without having listened to the music before, after, and even during their reading of this book. Venezia includes his normal entertaining cartoons reflecting key moments in the life of Brahms, but in addition to the biographical details there is also more of an effort in this offering to talk about the type of music Brahms wrote and where it fit in with that of his contemporaries. Other volumes in the World's Greatest Composers series cover not only such giants of classical music as Handel and Mozart, but also more contemporary composers like Aaron Copland, Duke Ellington, and the Beatles.

Science and faith blended in this man's life.
John Hudson Tiner dones a fine job of writing this easy reading book of Kepler's life. I cannot comment on how well he makes the subject matter easy to understand for the intended audience, since I am not experienced in that area, but I can tell it is a great book for high school and older -- a book written for young people that adults can read without feeling like it is written beneath them. One great feature of this book, and other books by Tiner in this series, is the fact that he explains scientific facts in such a way that those not familiar with them can gain an understanding of some of the contributions of this man to astronomy. Pictures, some from Kepler's works, throughout the book make the book even more valuable.

Any biography on Kepler is not true to the man if his faith and science are separated. Raised in a less than ideal family situation, Kepler lived in incredible times so far as the fighting over religious beliefs is concerned. Though he held firmly to and held dearly his own faith and gave up much because of it, he did not wish to become involved in the fighting over it. He also freely acknowledged that God gained glory from whatever scientific study he did.

Kepler's contribution to astonomy was immense. As an example, he was provided with much needed observational data from Tycho that allowed him to determine the orbital path of Mars (around the Sun). This opened the door to determine the orbital path of other heavenly bodies as well. At one point he was motivated to discover the truth about the heavenly bodies to help dispel the superstition that caused his own mother to be tried inappropriately as a witch.

This book provides a good starting point for learning about the life of Kepler. Such reading is wholesome and inspiring and good for teaching excellent values in life. To continue my study of Kepler, I am presently reading the book on him titled Kepler by Max Casper, Dover pub., 1993, a book clearly written for adults which includes much more detail. Tiner's book was a good preliminary for this latter book.
