This book is the preferred one for teaching high level Calculus sequences at my college. In particular math 110a and 110b, this is NOT a reformed calculus textbook. It's a good, old traditional style text :) I like it.

Another related book that I recently skimmed is "The Land Called Holy: Palestine in Christian History and Thought" by Robert Wilken. This is a set of papers written by Stigler in his marvelous career. It is divided into 5 parts: I. Contributions to economics; 2. contributions to political economics; 3. contributions to industrial organization; 4. history of economic thought; 5. the wit of George Stigler.

It is very difficult to gather all these 23 articles in only one place. The book is worth because you can find a bunch of deep knowledge.

Enjoy the book, revisit old ideas very clear and well written, and perhaps get other ones.

Obviously you enjoy architecture or you wouldn't be thinking of reading a review of this book. Think no further, buy the book. Frank Furness has been overlooked way too long and this book shows why in pictures and a nice overview of text why this mans work, and what is left of it, should be escalated to the heights of the finest.

Nathan was an incredible character and Connolly shows why he was certainly the most important critic of the first half of the 20th century. He also proves that Nathan is a representative American cultural figure.

I got totally caught up in Nathan's struggles with "burying" his own Jewishness and with the anti-semitism of his era.

Great stars and writers like H. L. Mencken, Eugene O'Neill, Laurette Taylor, Lillian Gish, and Tennessee Williams crowd the book's pages and bring Broadway's glory days to life. Nathan was a real "man about town" and this book captures the wit and glamour of the Great White Way.

Connolly also shows how critics today live in Nathan's shadow. He challenges them by questioning their methods and standards. (And even takes on some "high-brow" reviewers like John Lahr and Robert Brustein.)
