If you were to only have one book on the Great Basin - this should be it. It covers the flora & fauna of this least know section of the lower 48 in a comprehesive, yet not belabored fashion. Plenty of salient details with a minimum - though adequate - smattering of scientific jargon. Even though I have worked for a public land management agency in the "Basin" for over 2 decades, I learned much and enhanced my understanding of things I did know. The photography by Trimble captures the inescapable beauty of the area that is unknown to the typical drive-through-as-fast-as-you-can tourist. There is no finer book - verbiage or photographic - on this largely unpopulated jewell of complex arid ecosystems.

Finally, a book that captures the unique beauty and solitude of the Great Basin. This is the ultimate book for any naturalist who wants to know more about this large and little visited corner of the world.

This book was GREAT! Between the pictures and maps I found an author who shows a great deal of expression, passion and dedication to his work. Using common names for plants and animals except when specific subspecies are mentioned made the book much more readable for a layperson such as myself.

My next trip to the Great Basin in Oregon will be more fulfilling and educational as much of my ignorance about this special area has been dispelled.

To date this is the best money I have spent on a book about the Great Basin.

I received this as a gift and a wonderful gift it is. The paintings by Gary Collins are unlike any golf art I've ever seen. The writing is amazingly insightful. I find I go back and reread different chapters time and again.

This book captures the most amazing similarities between golf and life. For one to understand the game of golf, truly has a passion for life. From the moment I picked up this book, I was captivated by its wisdom. The Secrets to the Game of Golf & Life should be required reading for all those who wish to master the game of golf. There are no guarantees that it will improve your game, but it will improve your mental awareness of it. The rest is up to you.

For me, this is a very comforting and healing book. The little girl reminds me so much of myself - and her process is so familiar to me and I'm sure many who are healing from abuse and have disassociated during the process. The one thing I would mention is that it startled me a little that this book suggests integration may be necessary - while I know some people who feel that it's not necessary or even desirable for them personally.

My Psychiatrist recommended this book to me and let me read his copy of it at the end of one of our sessions. At first I wondered what his motives were in suggesting I read a children's book, but after the first page I knew exactly why. The book was like a divine inspiration to me, helping me to struggle on and strive for the full integration of my "parts." As a child, I had numerous imaginary friends much like the friends who join the little girl during her journey through the woods. Some of them later became extensions of my self, and eventually, integral parts of who I am. I used to just want them to go away and leave me alone. After reading this book, though, I realize that I need them just as much as they need me and one day we'll all become one again. That was what I once feared, but now I know it's what we all truly want.

I was thoroughly touched by both books and was moved even more into a healing place from which I found strength to deal with my own dragons and all the help from inside to work together through a healing journey. I found that it was ok to have dragons and if one can work together you can get through anything. The books also taught me about a great place that you can go to inside where everything is calm and beautiful and safe where there is blue light, and you can even ride on a dolphin and find lightness of heart while dealing with the most troublesome areas of my life. I found you can create in your mind that great place to go to when things hurt so much, a place all your own. Found that even the most meanest dragons can be beautiful swans. These books helped me be ok with the healing journey I must face in order to become the person I want to be and that it's ok to be scared and confused and sad. I found that I can have fun and have feelings that are good and work on other issues at the same time and rely on my inner strengths to get through even the most troublesome times and find healing at last. The nice thing about these books is how well written they are and easy to understand and to be ok with what you must deal with. Yes while going through the forest there are many dangerous animals and yet you can find strength in the forest as well and beauty. These books helped me to see that and to go through this journey although painful and yet very calming while working together to all become beautiful swans and then you find you all were beautiful swans all along, some needed help to see it that way. The illustrations in these books are so colorful and meaningful.

For those who have no experience with the Bible at all, and even for those who have read the Bible through 16 times, this is a good book because it helps you understand the background of the books of Holy Writ. Whether you take 30 days or 3 months, the system is manageable because the lessons are made to be completed in about 10-15 minutes a day. For those wanting to incorporate this into a quiet time, the lessons will force you to become disciplined by writing out some of the basic information presented. Over and over again you practice what you learn. And as a teacher, I find this to be one of the best methods in teaching--learning by doing. By the end of the book, you will be looking Max Anders' name up on Amazon so you can buy other "30 Day" books.

If you are new to the Bible, or if you are an old scholar, this book is for you. It provides a clear chronlogical order, explains some of the most complex issues of the Bible in the simpliest terms without losing any of the Godly inspiration of the Bible. As a pastor with a Ph.D. in Biblical studies, I must highly recommend this book. It would also be great as a textbook for a college Bible course.

We use this book as our guide in our Sunday school class. It's called Bible 101. This book has helped me and others finally understand things in the Bible that we never have before! I recommend this book to anyone who would like to understand more about the Bible and even for people who think they know a lot about the Bible. Everyone benifits from this book!

This is the best book I know that treats Adorno's relationship to postmodernism (esp aesthetics). Certainly written for experts, it presupposes strong familiarity with Adorno and some of the posty folk (esp Derrida).

Any attempt to disentangle the many threads of Adorno's rather confusing opus hinge on the fact that he never exhibited any sense of actuality. He was but mere unlived potential, a wasted and fragmented soul. Academics will read and enjoy. The rest of us will be stuck with Star Trek.

It is probably harsh to say of Pensky, "The parallels are with Star Trek", since surely they lie elsewhere, near the Bay of Fundy. When the villagers arrived to tell us that the basilica's southern tip had submerged we finally got it, Adorno had an acutality, but one very different than what we previously had assumed.

The book was awesome, I loved looking at all the images. It brought back memories of a Peter Max beach towel I had over many summers.
I hear that Peter Max is in Boston this week, at "Wentworth Gallery" on Newbury St. I think it was thursday night. It would be so great to meet him and see his original artwork.

First off I want to correct the often repeated false statement in a previous review: Heinz Edelman was the artist behind The Beatles Yellow Submarine, Peter Max had absolutely nothing to do with it, and was in no way the inspiration behind it. Edelman was already doing Yellow Sub style art before Max's style became famous. For the complete background read "Inside the Yellow Submarine".

That said, this is a wonderful, long over due collection of the art of Peter Max. I don't think this book could have been printed any better, it is stunning. For me, the only thing that could make it better would be to add even more pages of art. The classic 60s-70s period gets the short end of the stick being overshadowed by the newer works. It is all beautiful work either way, but my preference would have been for more of the older pieces.

People will be magnetically drawn to this sitting on your coffee table. This is also a great companion to "The Art of Rock" the 2-ton book of classic old Fillmore concert posters that was out about 15 years ago. They don't make art like this anymore...unfortunately.

Everyone knows the genius of Peter Max and the fun of his art. I won't presume to review either. Instead, let's talk about the book! Beautiful printing on quality paper. The included commentary and history put a perspective to each piece of art that most readers wouldn't have otherwise. Peter Max inspired my wife to become an artist. She'll cherish this book for years to come. If you are a Max fan, so will you. As all coffee table books are, a bit pricey but an excellent work to enjoy again and again!

This book elucidates the greatest and most inspiring teachings of Hinduism, and yet does so in a way which is full of humor and wit and shows the universality of the teachings and their immediate relevance for daily life. Special technical terms and other boring academic BS are virtually nonexistent, and the book's filled with lots of clever little stories and fables to illustrate the teachings. Swami Satchidananda is a true master of the pun; he alerts us to the dangers of egoism, for example, by reminding us how the word 'mine' -- meaning 'belonging to me' -- can also mean something treacherous that's just waiting to explode on us when we step on it!

Fun and light-hearted, yet also enlightening, heartening, uplifting and utterly profound. Can't recommend it too highly.

As dramatic as that claim sounds, this book entered my life when I desperately needed help. It became a "bible" for me that got me though some very troubled waters...the simplicity of the language and the depth of Swami Satchidananda's sincerity has had a profound effect on me. I read it at least once a year...and I give it as a gift to very special friends who are ready for the message, which changes with each new reading! All that, plus Peter Max's artwork! A great library addition.

I bought this little book as a Peter Max fan and was delightfully surprised by the simply written, pointed pearls of the Swami's wisdom. It is the kind of book that you can just randomly read when you want to be uplifted, or a lovely gift appropriate for art lovers as well as anyone at the beginning...or in the middle of...life's journey.

Not Charles Dickens by any stretch of the imagination! Shulman's characterizations, through the eyes of the main character, Maurice, are priceless. Coupled with Maurice's commentary, the book reads like one long story told over a beer by your best friend while you sit in the back of a bar somewhere. Maurice offers no apologies for his behavior, so the ribald antics and observations are completely justifiable to him - which is exactly what makes the book so funny - especially when he gets caught up side the head by how life can play out.

This book is a riot! I've read it about 4 times and still kill myself laughing! I love the way Max Shulman gets a laugh in. It's so unexpected. Read this book! It's a hoot!!!

This is a hilarious semi-autographical book and right up there with "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis" and "Rally Round The Flag Boys" among Max Shulman's best works. I especially enjoyed the ridiculously funny love poems written for Maurice by his brittle-bone diseased cousin "Crip".

Mayakovsky was one of the foremost futurist poets of the early 20th centuary. He wrote anguished (and mildly egocentric) pieces about being alone and unrequited in love. He also wrote political poems that were supposed to moblize the workers and shock the borgeosie establishment. This book is worth buying for the two epics "A cloud in trousers" and "The backbone flute" alone. The other poems are the icing on the cake, sounding off his thundering poetic voice. His final poem, "Past one o'clock.." starkly contrasts the others with it's muted depression. He would include part of it in his suicide note, changing the line "now you and I are quits" to "now life and I are quits." The Bedbug is a savage satire of Soviet society, and (had he not shot himself) would probably have gotten him arrested during the imminent Stalinist purges. After his death, Mayakovsky was lauded by Stalin. His pro-Bolshevik political verses were glorified and proudly shown off by the state, whilst his other poems and satirical plays were quietly supressed. Get this book if you want to see every side of Mayakovsky, and not just the one that has been publicized for years as propaganda.

Of animal herds,
He slashes and bashes,
He kicks and he bites,
The world of the uselessness,
Bleeds and than dies.

Well, I love pre-Revolution Russian literature, so I guess I'm a little biased towards this book, but it really is good. Even the introduction is fascinating and inspiring if you ask me.
