Amazing for the SAT!
It's funny. I got a 770/800 on my verbal SAT. My friends can't believe I did it by studying a book comprised of funny little cartoons and rhymes. It sounds funny, but it works!

Studying from a gigantic book of thousands of vocab words are boring and scary. This book however, actually makes it fun! I didn't think useless vocab which is tested on the SAT could be fun to learn, but I was wrong.

Great book. If you are studying for the SAT verbal...Buy it!

Works very well
I got my book three days after my order and it was well worth it. After gettin it i read for about an hour and learned about 65 words the book contains about 300. The book is well illistrated, it made recalling the words realy easy. All around great book and serces it purpose very well.

Great book
so much fun to learn from. I remember all the little pictures!!!!!

Bought it years ago
I bought this book years ago on a business trip. I have hundreds of investment books but I keep this one in my first spot. When I buy a new book I place it in order of merit. This thing has never moved from #1. I couldn't believe the price, I bought it on clearance for 5 bucks. After I purchased it I went back the next day and there were none left. I have been looking for another copy ever since because I don't want to loan out my only one. Book price is now 160. That price appreciation alone is better than almost any other investment I have owned in years. My advise is pay up and try to get one if you can. It has been worth it's weight in gold for me. Great Great book.

A Very Worthwhile Read
I've never invested money or even read any other book on investing. However, for some reason I feel like this is the only book I should ever want to read on the subject. The author's simple portrait of cherished Swiss knowledge pulses with the same quality that other things that interest me do. (I have bad grammar yes, but who gives an f?)

Principles For Life
This isn't just a book on investing. Each of these axioms can be applied to any life situation as well. For example: "When the boat starts sinking, jump" can be applied to any situation you find yourself involved in like a friendship or romance, or any business dealing.

The Real Thing...
It was October 1994 that I took those first steps into Asheville's vegetarian food grotto. You actually step down a few steps to get into Max & Rosie's Café, and most always greeted by a happy face behind the counter. It has the feeling of some Sufi café in London (if indeed there is such a place). Maybe that's because Max (that's not his really name by the way) follows the Sufi path, and IS from London. He's Rosie's husband. She's from Miami (and Rosie's not her real name either). She'll tell if you ask...

When you buy their book you'll learn more about their names and how they got started. It's a little bit of a mystery.

This is a review of Max & Rosie Beeby's first book.

It wasn't long after visiting the café that first time, that Rosie shared with me her desire to write a book. Our heritages both stem from New York City so she was easy for me to love immediately! She had already been a Macrobiotic food teacher back in Florida, and now serving the public she was ready. It made sense. However, being an active and dutiful mother, and Max doing his artwork (which the book and cafe is filled with) there was little time for book writing (and Rosie would like to stay away from the computer as much as she can.

However they were determined, and 7 years later Ten Speed Press published the book. Named after their restaurant (as in the tradition of Moosewood and other best-selling cookbooks), Cafe Max & Rosie's is a delightful and creative 178 pages of, not only recipes, but short statements of some of the people who have worked and visited the café, sort of like their guest book.

This book is a great "table top" addition. You can "feel" not only the essence of the food, but can also get the same "feel" of Max's artwork. Ah, Max, quite a mystic himself. With the rugged look of an English pub bouncer, he exhibits the gentleness of a Buddhist monk. I've spent a couple of nights talking with him late at night in their log cabin in the mountains.

Their book is divided: Part one called "Rosie's Cooking Classes," and part two "Just Juice It!"

So, what distinguishes one cook book from another? Is it the amazing dishes? I think not, for as I have said of their restaurant, I say also of their book, "As Japanese culture has shown, how we eat--the ambience--is as important as the food itself."

The heavy parchment paper on which the words and artwork are reproduced can best be described as a table setting worthy of the love and purity contained within the recipes. And if you are indeed a food aficionado, page 56 offers a "Linguini with Fresh Garlic and Asparagus" recipe with tempeh, Portobello mushrooms, and spinach, that will soothe your senses, titillate your palate, and nourish you body.

Is this the best cookbook I have read? I can't say, because I don't "read" cookbooks, I sense them. My sense of the Cafe Max & Rosie's book is that it is very "edible." It is a book worth having in your home....

Cafe Max and Rosie's: spirited nourishment at many levels!
I am returning to order my sixth copy of this inspiring and entertaining cookbook for a Vegan friend. My kids (7 and 9 years old) even love the fare, and that's a blessing to a single, working parent with little time and very picky eaters. Ten Speed Press scores again -- who wouldn't want to devour these deliciously clever dishes sourrounded by the tale of Max and Rosie's timeless love? Spirited, playful, and best-of-all yummy, healthful eating. Congratulations Max & Rosie -- your family is about to get much, much bigger!

Cafe Max and Rosies
What a fabulous book! It magically creates a whole ambiance around healthful eating, from the gorgeous illustrations to the mouthwatering recipes and delightful, insightful commentary that both captivates and educates. Also, as a practising Nutritionist, I really appreciate that these recipes are truly healthy and not dairy or wheat dependent. A perfect companion for those new to a naturally healthy lifestyle, and those seeking new inspiration in an established natural foods diet.

The Christmas Cross
This is a wonderful and very moving book that would be a wonderful gift for anyone in your family or friends. I bought one for each of my children and their families to have for Christmas and for anytime they need to be thankful for their family.

Heart Warming!!
This book is so great and sad. I'm not very emotional and I almost cried. It shows how any sin no matter how great it is can be forgiven by God because He loves us so much. I also recommend other Max Lucado books like Cosmic Christmas.

This is a book that will live on in peoples hearts forever
I got this book for Christmas last year from my Aunt and I read it that night... it was such and wonderful story it made me cry. This book really makes you think about how important it is to have family and friends around for Christmas and all through the year. The way the book is desinged and the little truesures that it holds makes you want to dive right in the story and it leaves you with a deep feeling of saddness and happiness. And when i have children i am planning on giving this book to them and to have it out every Christmas so that others can read is heart-warming story. Merry Christmas!

I hope you dance
After reading this book, I thought of two beautiful dancers who are so intune with each other that the one who is following knows instinctively where the other is leading. What a beautiful book and the what possibilities for a beautiful dance with my heavenly Father.

A More(ish) book
This book is an absolute for anyone but particularly for the Christian who desires more than just a church life. Dancing, romancing and falling in love with the Savior all over again is a wonderful experience and worth it all. Stoping with Him to smell the roses in life was worth it all. Thanks Jeff Walling and Max Lucado for letting Him lead in your Dance. You've saved another soul from dispair. I have, over the last year become a Max Lucado fan, which lead me to this book. Man was it worth it!

Learn to Experience God's Wonderful Leadership
Jeff Walling used to speak at least once a year where I attended college, and I never missed him speak if I could help it. When I heard about this book, I bought it as soon as I could, and I'll never regret it. This is a wonderful book that takes a good look at the walls we build that keep us from experiencing the joys of life. Jeff discusses many ways to give up guilt and control to God in order to experience the great joys, and even the sorrows, that God has intended for us, by letting God lead us in the dance of life.

It's a BIG help!
If you're learning Koine, this helps when your brain shuts down and you have absolutely NO clue what form that word is or what the lexical form is and your dictionary has failed you. With this, like Kubo Sakae's handy-dandy Reader's Greek-English Lexicon, you can look up book & verse! :D It gives you Greek idioms, too & sometimes commentary. :)
This book will make you want to cheer!

Delightful! Could become a crutch for verbs.
After I finished first-year NT Greek, I used this precious gem of a tool to read Colossians with significant understanding in about four hours! This is better than ANY of the computerized Greek NT study helps.

Use this tool with Zerwick's excellent little grammar book, to which it's keyed. In the few places where I've found that my biases differ from Zerwick's, his have always been easy enough to isolate and think about.

Use this tool for quick reading; don't use it for exegesis papers, and don't let it become a crutch for verb forms.

ESSENTIAL reference (side-by-side with GNT)
I took first-year and Intermediate Greek; we used the Lexical Aids for Students of New Testament Greek to get our vocabulary down to 10x word occurrences in the Greek New Testament. Yet doing this, you only cover roughly 99% of all words in the Greek New Testament. There are many, many words in the Greek New Testament that occur quite often, and it's good to have this book to look up what they mean. Alan Wong (one of the reviewers) also told me about this book, and it is fabulous!

Especially when reading Paul where there are many hapaxlegemons, it is essential to have a good dictionary around, and "Max and Mary" (as this is nicknamed) is very good to have around, especially that it is layed out verse-by-verse, parsed. I use this book quite regularly when I'm in the Gospel of Luke or in the Acts of the Apostles, or in the Epistles. (The book of Hebrews is another matter altogether!)

In addition, the book also covers a number of textual variants, grammatical constructs, and idioms, all very helpful. It is bound in vinyl (I think to be lightweight), so unfortunately, if you use this heavily, it may fall apart over the years.

It's worth it for the student and pastor who has learned a good amount of Greek grammar, and wants to do some Greek translation and exegesis, and is a great tool to have when beginning exegesis. In addition, I'd also recommend Daniel Wallace's Greek Grammar Beyond the Basics (which was our Intermediate Greek textbook), which explains a lot of the more advanced Greek constructs and grammar.

However, as a good working translation is important in exegesis, this book is invaluable.

Finding a Connection
The Heart of a Father, compiled by Wayne Holmes, is a book that can be quickly read and enjoyed, then set aside for a while and re-read and enjoyed all over again. With each reading, the reader will discover new insights, new ways to connect with God. The stories are told in short bitesize morsels that can be consumed by the eager reader in less time than it would take to inhale a candy bar. And though some of the stories are sprinkled with sugar that's where the similarities between this book and a candy bar and its quickly disappearing sugar-high end. The stories are filled with God's wisdom and tend to remain with the reader throughout the day, helping the reader to discover similarities between the way they teach their own children and the way God teaches us. Mr. Holmes has done a thorough job of making sure the reader puts on a thinking cap, and in doing so has managed to bring God and His ways more fully into their lives.

Father Figures We All Need
If you have a father, step-father, or grandfather in your life, or are about to be a father, you'll want to buy this book. Wayne Holmes has assembled a fine collection of inspirational stories on fatherhood that will serve as a model for all men. From the famous, such as Max Lucado, to the soon-to-be-famous, like Linda Knight, each writer has captured an attribute of our Father in Heaven's character in a unique way. This books will make a great present for any man.

Worth reading!
Appreciating the varied roles of earthly fathers helps us understand our Heavenly Father. Through engaging stories and vignettes, The Heart of a Father nudges us toward that understanding. A good read -- and a valuable one.

A History of Rome: Down to the Reign of Constantine

Cary's incisiveness fills niche between Mommsen and Gibbon
I have the 2nd Edition of this 1935 book. Having read and re-read this and Gibbon and Mommsen, it suddenly struck me that Cary offers a more succinct and incisive interpretation of the MEANING of each epoch in Roman history. He also disagrees markedly from others on the value/meaning of 'controversial' emperors (Nero, Domitian, Diocletian) which is very refreshing and well-stated. Frankly, if you want to get a good sense of the meaning of the History of Rome, read Cary first; then Mommsen, then Gibbon. Then, back to Cary. I wish this book were still in print. Don't let it go unread, if you are a Romanophile...

The Standard on the Subject
This extremely dense text is still head and shoulders above other contenders as the standard history of the rise and history of the roman empire. The authors thesis, that Rome never truly fell but evolved into the catholic church/feudal state is well defended with ample evidence.

What makes this book so extraordinary is the depth and breath of the subject matter covered. Military history, politics, technology, art, science, social development, trade, are all given ample coverage. While it can be quite dry, the reader is free to skip around reading only the subjects of interest. For the scholar or the curious, this is a must own text that will serve as a crucial guide and reference.

The Best History Book
This is the best Roman History book out there. Its great for JCL -- it took me to a tie for 1st on the Histroy test at NJCL! The index in the book truly stands out - it lists everything. A good companion to it is the OCD. If you're interested in Roman History get this book.

Angels & Christmas--an unbeatable combination!
Very cute story about a little boy whose Christmas Tree angel comes to life to sing sweet songs to him. Gorgeous artwork brings the story to life with brilliance. I loved that the story repeated itself once the little boy grew up and had a son of his own who hears the angels music.

SINGS TO YOUR HEART AND SPIRIT
This is one of the most beautifully illustrated, delightful stories I have had the good fortune to encouter. Alabaster, the spirited little angel, touches the life a boy with positive results. The message in this gentle story is that when good is done, pass it on. It is so lovely, so moving that it might make one misty eyed. This book is a real treasure. Max Lucado and the illustrator have used their talents to enrich the lives of others.

Wonderful story for Christmastime or anytime
This is a fabulous book that brings to mind the wonder of Christmas through a child's eyes. The illustrations are beautiful and the story is timeless and unforgettable! I read this story to my children, ages 11, 8, and 4, each year around Christmas. I even read it to my MOPS group as a Christmas reading last year. Thank you, Max Lucado, for another wonderful children's book!

An entertaining look at a bygone era
I first read "Please Kill Me" and developed a fascination for this era of American social history. This book describes, through stories and pictures, the various stages of Max's and all the celebrity goings on. Very entertaining, also a high quality edition, of a period of decadence.

High on this book!!!
Anyone interested in the NYC rock'n'roll scene of the 1960's-'70's should get this book. Warhol's Superstars, the Velvets, Nico, Patti Smith, and so many more all have their place in here! Mickey Ruskin, the owner of Max's, pretty much kept alive 99% of the cities "starving artists" during those times! A lot of popular musicians got their start at Max's, from Bruce Springsteen to Debbie Harry (a former Max's waitress!). If you want to learn more about the "back room" at Max's and all the characters who hung out there, get this book! Lots of entertaining anecdotes from so many different scenesters! Most of these people lived on the edge! Other books I would recommend are "Man Enough To Be a Woman" by Jayne County and "Rebel Heart" by Bebe Buell (they were regulars at Max's as well)!!!

I loved every page of this book
This book was great, excellent pictures and a great tell all of the time. Nothing was held back from this oral history, very detailed and fun. Yvonne Ruskin did a great job, I felt like I knew these people and since I have never been to Max's and now that it is gone it was alot of fun to see what it was like and sad at the same time because I wish I could of been there.
