Things Everyone Should Know!
Everyone should own this book. Many people make assumptions about religion, such as its effect on people's moral behavior for instance, without actually taking the time to find out if their assumptions are true. (As it turns out, level of religiousity including atheism is not a good predictor of whether or not someone will engage in helping behavior, or cheat on an exam, for instance.) Instead of repeating prejudices and inventing wild armchair theories, this book describes actual experiments and other research studies concerning a wide variety of topics concerning religion, in an objective, unbiased fashion. One interesting finding is that religious fundamentalists as a group are the most prejudiced toward all minority groups, while atheists are the least so. Is it the fault of religion? Not that simple! The authors explain that since the scores of mainstream Christians on measures of prejudice turn out to be much more similar to the atheists, and since fundamentalists also score very high on measures of authoritarianism, it's authoritarianism that leads to prejudice. However, these particular subtopics are just a tiny sliver of what this book actually covers.

Gripping memoirs of the Cultural Revolution
In this compilation of stories, readers will learn about the horrors that many children in China had to live through. All of the stories are told by Chinese who were children or adolescents during the peak of the Cultural Revolution. Many were torn from their parents, some never forgot or forgave the pain that Chairman Mao's reforms put them through. This book is an intensely emotional window into China. Though some stories are disturbing, it is an important book to read if you want to know where the Chinese people are coming from. The experiences they had in the 60's and 70's have shaped who they are today, both individually and as a nation.

well written and poetic
This is a collection of interviews with people who were children during the Cultural Revolution. The author writes in English and translates the narratives herself, which gives the book a poetic unity, made even more enjoyable by the fact that she writes well. Unlike Feng Jicai's Ten Years of Madness, Chihua Wen's own writing is evocative, complementary, unintrusive, and poetic. The narratives aren't as diverse as Feng's, but the writing here is better.

104 Questions Children ask about Heaven and Angels
This book was enjoyable for myself as well as my 9-year old. The cartoons and explanations as well as scripture verses were helpful and fun. I learned right along with my child. We both would recommend this book and others in the series to those searching and new to the faith. It is reassuring to know the answers to some of those suprising questions my children ask!

Blind Date (Freddy Krueger's Tales of Terror)

As Teen Horror Novels go, one of the best!!LL

As a serious thinker and a reader of all forms of literature, I was delighted to see this brilliant work in a genre which has been insulted and degraded by many (Teen Horror). Mr. Richards has not only brought new dignity to this book form, but has taken a worn-out character (Freddy Krueger) and taken him to whole new levels and dimensions.

This book may seem at first glance to focus on Alicia, the cheerleader who is driven blind by a car accident, but working on a more deep, subtle level, The story revolves around Evan, the tortured "nerd". And what Mr.Richards is trying to show here is that the villian is not Freddy, but is the group of "popular kids" who persist in torturing Evan. In this, he proves that the villian is not always the hideous ghoul, but is sometimes the (at least physically) real human.

I have never known a writer in this genre to work on so many levels in a novel. Other authors, whom I certainly respect simply for having the patie

Of baldness and good friends...
This is a wonderfully funny book, which appeals to all children -- but has a special magic for families affected by cancer. Bruce is a loveable character, who is embarassed when his antlers fall out. His friends offer lots of suggestions, which result in the ridiculous and amusing, made even more comical by the pop-up illustrations. This book was recommended to us by a social worker as her favorite for reading with her children when she lost her hair during a course of chemotherapy treatment. Humor is healing! This book would also be instructional for children (or adults!) who are embarassed by their appearance for whatever reason.

At some variance with the show, but wonderful nonetheless!
March 14, 1971, a new comic strip appeared from the Newspaper Enterprise Association, a comic strip entitled, Dark Shadows. Patterned on the successful (though doomed) American television show of the same name, the comics featured the vampire Barnabas Collins returning to his ancestral home in Maine and protecting his last living relatives, Elizabeth Collins Stoddard and her daughter Carolyn. Expertly illustrated by Kenneth Bruce Bald, the black-and-white drawings wonderfully compliment the Gothic setting of the story, and illustrator did an excellent job of capturing Jonathan Frid's likeness.

The comic only ran for 52 week before it too was cancelled, and all of the comics are reproduced in this book. The comics cover six storylines: 1) Barnabas faces an ancient warlock who cannot die until he has killed the last of the Collins; 2) the goddess Isis has found all that she needs to restore her husband Osiris to life, except for his soul which is in the body of a certain vampire; 3) when a werewolf begins stalking the town of Collinsport, Barnabas acts; 4) the master of darkness, Mr. Sinestra, is angered that he never gained control of Barnabas Collins, and he sets out correct that; 5) when the daughter of an old college rival of Elizabeth arrives at Collinwood, people begin to die, and Barnabas needs to stop it; and 6) Barnabas sets out to change history and right a two hundred year wrong. Along the way, Barnabas uses his vampiric powers, but defeats his enemies with his wits and (more often) with his heart.

First of all, it must be said that these comics were written independently of the television show, and does *not* maintain continuity with it. That said, though, the stories are wonderful, the illustrations are excellent, and the book makes a wonderful purchase for anyone who fondly remembers the show. I loved this book, and highly recommend it!

Davy Crockett: The Legend of the Wild Frontier (The Library of American Lives and Times)
Published in Library Binding by Powerkids Pr (2001)
Authors: Richard Bruce Winders and Bruce Winders
Amazon base price: $31.95
Average review score:

A solid juvenile biography of Davy Crockett
So far the volumes in The Library of American Lives and Times are very nice looking. The covers always feature a portrait of the biographical subject in front of a key scene from their life; in this case, "Davy Crockett: The Legend of the Wild Frontier" is shown over a painting of the Battle of the Alamo. Author Richard Bruce Winders introduces the book by letting Crocket tell about himself, providing a choice excerpt from the 1835 edition of the "Davy Crockett Almanack" where he promises to convince everyone "that I can run faster, jump higher, squat lower, dive deeper, stay under longer, and come up drier, than any man in the whole country."

Obviously Winder's title is a play on the idea of Crockett as the King of the Wild Frontier, which was immortalized in the Fess Parker Disney films. Winders makes it clear from the start that he is trying to separate the truth from the legends, while continuing to enjoy the tall tales. This juvenile biography tells of how Crockett grew up on the frontier, married his first wife Polly, and served as a militia scout in the war against the Red Sticks. After that, Crockett began building the reputation that would make him an American legend as he went from a famous hunter of bears to the U.S. House of Representatives. One of the interesting aspects of this book is that we actually learn some details about Crockett in Congress; for example, he opposed the U.S. Military Academy as West Point since the poor were paying taxes that allowed the sons of the rich and powerful to go to school. Crockett also spoke out against the unfair treatment of Native Americans by President Andrew Jackson's administration.

While Crockett was in Congress he became famous for representing the true American. He served as the model for a frontier politician Colonel Nimrod Wildfire in the popular play, "The Lion of the West." When others made money off of his name writing biographies about him, Crockett authored his own autobiography. Winders also talks about the political friction between Crockett and Jackson. Along with charges that he was too busy being famous to represent his district, Crockett was defeated for re-election. Crockett then left Tennessee to go to Texas for hunt, where, of course, he became involved in the War for Texas and met his death at the Alamo.

"Davy Crockett: The Legend of the Wild Frontier" does deal much more with the real story and is illustrated with historic paintings, etching, and documents. In telling the story of the Alamo, for example, Winders focuses what little is actually known about Crockett's final days. It is only at the end of the book that Winders returns to the legend as part of Crockett's legacy. Young readers, however, should have a much better understanding of the historical Crockett after reading Winders' informative book.

Fabulous primer on the media's structure and techniques.
"The Gods of Antenna" is a well written "book of lists" that details a particular technique of telling the news and then a list of examples. The book was written by a person in the Nixon White House 2 years after Watergate... this guy is an insider with an interesting perspective... although the examples are a bit dated for someone not "of age" in 1976. Go to microfiche and check his sources. Well worth it. I don't own a copy of the book (I'm looking for it here.) So, I won't give an example because I can't quote it exactly. Regardless, this relatively short book could be used as a textbook for Public Relations and as a guide to understanding the quality or character of the news that we read or watch on TV.
