Roald Dahl's works always defy imagination!
I picked up the Vicar of Nibbleswick when I was 19, delighted that I had found a Roald Dahl book that I had never read before. This is a very fun book _for anyone_! If you have children or teach, this is a wonderful way to make reading pure fun. The book is not long, packed with humor, and tells a thoroughly silly tale. Also, considering the book is all about a dyslexic vicar, it is a wonderful book to share with a dyslexic child, not to mention any classroom with a dyslexic child in it. Roald Dahl has a way of making the fantastic part of children's lives. For your children or classroom, I also highly recommend the BFG (Big Friendly Giant) and Matilda, both by Roald Dahl and both as creative and imaginative as can be.

FUNNY! This is a must-have book! Read it again and again!
This is one of my favorite books! IT IS SOOOO FUNNY!!! Please buy it! You'll love it forever! I did!

Hillarious!
This is one of the funniest books ever. It is very short, but is so funny I garentee that you will love it. When I read the part when the Vicar when the vicar says My dear woman:never plug the glass! You must pis. Pis pis pis. Pis gently as you walk along the rail," I laughed out loud in class really loudly and I couldn't stop. This book will have you laughing so hard at some parts in the book that you will fall over in your seat at the charm and pure pleasure of reading The vicar of nibbleswicke.

Just lovely to imagine when you look at the trees
I really like the idea of postage stamp-sized windows and doors opening in a huge tree, and tiny people in suction-cup boots walking out and strolling through the ceiling of the forest. I like the idea of a swan big enough to carry a not-so-small boy while flying. "And above all, watch with glittering eyes the world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don't believe in magic will never find it."

Great book!
We love this book. One of my daughters, who loves fantasy, asks us to read this to her about once a week. The story totally captures a childs imagination. A child will never look at the trees in their yard the same way again.

Wonderful Ronald Dahl Imagination!!!
My 6 year old loves this book! Brought it home from the library again and it was the first one she picked up. This is typical of Ronald Dahl's amazing imagination, the little people with homes inside the trees and using the birds to travel; it's wonderful! I would recommend this book for most children, though for some, the beast at the beginning may be a little scary. It's a great "read to" book.

This book is very realistic.
I think Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is more than okay but was not the greatest.I liked Willy Wonka the best. He was very funny. That book was exiting to read.I liked the book because I love chocolate. This book is the best book we've read, so far, this year in 6th grade.Charlie ended up with the Chocolate Factory and he loved it a lot.

My Thoughts of Charlie & The Chocolate Factory
I read Charlie & The Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl for my grade 5 LA class. I really enjoyed this book. Charlie is main character in this story. He comes from an extremely poor family, his 4 grandparents live with his parents and Charlie. The story centers around a Chocolate Factory that is giving out 5 golden tickets, which provide the lucky winners with a lifetime supply of chocolate and a tour of the factory. The tour has no end of unexpected surprises. The funniest character was Veruca Salt because she was going to steal a squirrel. The squirrels tackled her and then knocked her on the head (to see if she was a good or bad nut). They decided she was a bad nut and then threw her down the garbage chute! This book is very hard to put down! There is also a movie available called Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory.

Read along to take a trip through a chocolate factory!
I read the book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. This was a great book to read. Though this was fictional, it was also realistic because you could picture the story going on in your head. I also found myself feeling like I was going through the experiences along with the story. Enough with the rating, let's get to the story so you can read it and rate it yourself! A young, poor child, Charlie, lived with a very poor family. Once a year, on his birthday, his grandparents along with his parents (to chip in with money) would give him one measly little Willie Wonka's chocolate candy bar. His clothes were in rags, he was all dirty and very sad that he was this way. One day he saw that there was a contest that had to do with Willie Wonka's chocolate factory. Mr. Wonka would put 5 golden tickets in his Willie Wonka chocolate bars. Charlie wanted to win the contest so bad, but he only got candy bars once a year, so he didn't have a good chance of winning one of the golden tickets. His grandfather decided that since the contest was so important to Charlie, he would get him a candy bar. The next day, his grandfather got him a chocolate candy bar. Everyone was so eager for him to open and win because you wouldn't just get a golden ticket, but a tour through the factory and a 1 year supply of candy bars! When Charlie opened the wrapper, so eager to win, there was no golden ticket. Charlie was so upset because he really thought that he had a chance. Until.... The next day, to his surprise, he found money in the sewer to buy a candy bar at the candy shop. He was kind of scared and eager to win because he wouldn't have anymore money to take a second chance. He opened the door to the candy shop and stepped in the shop, hoping that he would win a golden ticket, for there was only one more left. He selected a bar and carefully peeled open the wrapper. In amazement, he found the golden ticket! Yes, it was the last golden ticket and he had won it! Everyone crowded around Charlie in hope that maybe they could grab it from him. He was very excited, but also scared that maybe some adult or kid would grab the golden ticket for themselves. Finally the storekeeper said to go home and show his family what he had won in his candy bar. When Charlie went home and screamed that he had won the golden ticket everyone cheered. It was now ready to go to the front gate of the factory. I'm sure that you know how little Charlie must have felt winning the prize. You'll have to read the book to find out what happens along the tour with Mr. Wonka himself.

"Goodfellas", a brilliant motion picture
Goodfellas would have to be one of the most brilliantly pure interpretations of gangsters in the United States that I have ever seen.
Starring Robert De Niro, Ray Liotta and Joe Pesciand Lorraine Bracco, 'Goodfellas' was written by Nicholas Pileggi and Martin Scorcese, although much of the script is based on a true to life novel by Pileggi, spanning 30 years of lif in the mafia in the United States.
De Niro's performance of the criminalistic Jimmy Conway gives the film a naturalistic power, purely describing many of the capabilities and needs of a gangster. But not only is this film ingeniously acted, director Scorcese uses many daring film techniques, such as lengthy scenes without using any cuts (check the scene where they enter the niteclub).
There are brilliant performances by all; in particularly the often exuberant Joe Pesci, for which this picture garnered him his first oscar. Liotta is versatile in his role of Henry Hill, and Lorraine Bracco plays a gangster's wife with pure perfection. All things aside, Goodfellas is a fantastic movie and is one to stand the test of time for many years to come. This film is worth watching many times. I give it 5 stars.

Best Mob Movie Ever Made
The reason I am writing another review of this movie is because I spelled some words wrong in my last review. Here is my new
review. Covering thirty years of mob life, this gritty excellent
movie is not only director Martin Scorsese's greatest masterpiece
but it is also the best mafia movie ever made. Based on the novel Wiseguy by Nicholas Pileggi, it features Ray Liotta as the
true life Henry Hill, an Italian boy from Brooklyn who after seeing the glamorous lifestyles of gangsters decides to become a
mobster by joining a neighborhood mafia family led by Paul Sorvino. This study on New York mob life is a flawless gangster
that has the words timeless classic written all over it. I am a
real big fan of Martin Scorsese and I find this film that he has made superior to TAXI DRIVER, RAGING BULL, MEAN STREETS, and his
partially inferior CASINO. CASINO can never match the high class
and brilliance of this 1990 classic. It was a great injustice that GOODFELLAS lost best picture and best director to Kevin Costner's epic DANCES WITH WOLVES. Even though I love DANCES WITH WOLVES, I thought this film should've won. Oh well, at least
Joe Pesci won best supporting actor for his terrific portrayl of
hair trigger gangster Tommy Devito, which has to be the performance of his career. I can watch this film over and over and never get tired of it. Of all Scorsese films, this one is my favorite to watch over again. This is not just sleek and stylish, but it is also the greatest film of the 90's. Somebody
asked me once what is the best mafia film ever made. I told them
GOODFELLAS is the best mob movie ever made and THE GODFATHER is the best mafia trilogy ever made (All three films). Now I only wish Warner Brothers would release a special edition DVD of this movie complete with documentaries and commentary because a tour
de force like this deserves first-class treatment. Highly recomm-
endes and a must-see. Oh I forgot to mention the film also has terrific performances from Robert De Niro, Ray Liotta, Joe Pesci,
Lorraine Bracco, and Paul Sorvino.

Great film, awful DVD
Zero stars for the appallingly bad DVD (double sided???? I didn't even know such a thing existed until now). Others have covered this already, so I won't belabor the fact that the first side stops in the middle of the movie, never mind in the middle of a word, and you have to flip the disc to see the rest of the best gangster movie ever made (and I include the Godfather in that comment). Unforgivable.

Five stars + for the film. Stellar performances throughout. Although the great Robert De Niro is given top billing, it's really Ray Liotta who's the star, and I don't think he ever received the recognition he deserved for this terrific performance. Joe Pesci earned a well deserved Oscar for his part, Paul Sorvino is quietly terrifying as the local boss, and Lorraine Bracco comes very close to stealing the whole bowl of spaghetti from all of them. Keep an eye out for another Sopranos actor: Michael Imperioli plays a young wiseguy wannabe.

It's interesting to compare Scorsese's Goodfellas to his later and much inferior Casino. Even with the same screenwriter and several of the same cast, Casino can't begin to match the energy and inventiveness of the earlier film.

Let's hope somebody decides to give Goodfellas the kind of first class treatment it deserves.

Very "What color is your parachute-ish"
Lots of the Robin's advice comes straight out of the job hunting bible of the past 2 decades "What color is your parachute" by Richard Bolles but still --- It's an excellent primer for the real thing, and summarizes a lot of what Richard Bolles preaches and teaches.

Because it is a quick an easy read, I suggest buying it cheap (or take it out of the library (sorry Amazon)), use it to whet your appetite for Bolles books, then begin collecting every edition you can get your hands on of "What color is your parachute" (every edition has something new in it). And try to get a hold of the audio book (I think he only put one out in 1995 - I wish he'd put one out every year!). It'll change your life and maybe mine too, cause maybe, just maybe, If everyone were to read Bolles books and truly understand the concepts I wouldn't have to deal with so many unhappy, bitter people at the work place.

Definitely worth a look
I gave the book three stars rather than four or five because it doesn't deliver what the title promises and the cover is all hype -- but the book does deliver some very worthwhile guidance.

What to Do (WTD) will be best suited to the midlife career changer with valuable skills -- self-motivated folks who just need direction. I like the book's down-to-earth no-nonsense tone.

Good parts:
List of career-killers -- not new to anyone who's been out in the world, but well-stated and worth reviewing
Discussion of interviewing for information and network: very realistic
Discussion of internet job search is right on!
Discussion of starting a business is better than average (but I like my own "are you ready" checklist better!)
Salary negotiations section is excellent

Weak parts:
Self-assessment (lists of values and skills were very ordinary and won't be helpful to most)
Recommendation to take tests: rarely useful for mid-career managers or professionals
Relocation section: My book on this topic, Making the Big Move, is two hundred pages long -- two pages can't do justice to the topic and may be misleading.

I wish the author had focused more on interview and resume strategies; interestingly, she does not include a discussion of resumes at all. I suspect that her strength lies in the nuts-and-bolts of job search and I wish she had included more on those topics.

I had to smile when I read her section on how to find a career counselor. Everyone who writes a book includes a list of "must have" qualifications for an advisor and, amazingly, those qualifications are all held by the author!
With a degree in counseling, this author urges us to find a vocational counselor. However, vocational counseling experience helps younger job seekers. Midlife, mid-career professionals need different sources of help. Recent books that target this market tend to be written by experienced professionals who have advanced degrees and life experience.

There are valuable nuggets here and I wish the author would write a meaty book, based on what she knows well, rather than an overview that is too sketchy in some places to be a useful guide.

Learn From Someone Who Knows!
I highly recommend this insightful book to anyone who wants to improve their current job situation or consider a change altogether. It offers numerous options, ways to determine the best approach, and will continue to be a valuable resource for many years! Robin Ryans' realistic advice reflects her extensive and sought-after knowledge.

Learning more about children's author Roald Dahl
This juvenile biography gives young readers insights into the life and writing career of the beloved children's author. "Tell Me About Roald Dahl" does a nice job of coming up with interesting aspects of the author's life. Children will get to see photographs of the Roald Dahl museum in Aylesbury, England, and his writing hut, where he wrote in his old armchair. Chris Powling's book deals with the tragic aspects of Dahl's life involving his children and wife. There is also a section on Quentin Blake, the artist who worked on many of Dahl's books and who based "The BFG" on Dahl himself. Powling even touches upon the complaints of some parents that Dahl's books are simply too rude, but suggests children read the books and decide for themselves. My assumption is that any child who picks up this biography they have already fallen in love with Charlie, James and the other creations of this most imaginative author. Parents and teachers who notice a young reader going through every Dahl book they can get their hands on, should consider introducing those kids to this book as well.
