Something for your son and something for your dad.
In "Danny the Champion of the World" Roald Dahl tells a loving story of a father and his son, Danny. Danny grow up without a mother, but Danny's father is just enough for him to live happily. His father loves Danny more than anything else in the world, and Danny loves his father and teasures every momment with him. Danny helps his father in their automobile repair station, and they live in an old gypsy caravan. Just when Danny thinks everything is wonderful in life, one night his father disappears into the forest with a deep secret. Danny soon discovers his father's secret and that's when the adventure begins.

This is a great book for every child with or without a father, and it is a great book for every father to read as a bedtime story for his children. This is probably my best book of all Roald Dahl!

It is the Champion of the World!!!
The main characters in the book are Danny and his father. They live in a old gypsy caravan. The caravan has a bunk bed, a kerosene lamp, and a little stove and table. They are very poor. All they own is the caravan, a little filling station, and the field around it. His mother died when he was born. Danny loves living with his dad. They do everything together replace the engines in cars, fly kites, ect. DannyÕs father always talks about his father and what he did with his father when he was a kid. One of the things was poaching and just recently DannyÕs father tried poaching again and something very bad happened. read the book to find out the rest. The book is 196 pages. I liked the book I thought that it was one of the best books that I have ever read. It is different then other books. It is wonderful.

Chamioning Danny
Roald Dahl is the best children's story teller I have ever read. His stories are creative, compassionate, well written, and meaningful, which of course isn't nearly as important to young readers as the fact that they are just plain fun. Danny the Champion of the World is the story of a young boy and his widower father trying to poach pheasants from a local aristocrat's property. Their appoach is creative and their adventure is exciting, but their relationship is also touching and very effective. It is very easy book and enjoyable for children, and for adults who know how nice a realtionship with children like the one Danny and his father share, it is a touching story. This book is meant to be read aloud, but it is a wonderful story for anyone to read to themselves as well.

If you like Dahl...
If you like Dahl, you'll probably like this book a lot, but if not, you may not appreciate it. I thought that they were good stories in general if not incredibly well-written, but then again, I've just spent a month studying Faulkner. I've loved Roald Dahl since I first began reading books on my own, and I think that's probably why I like this book so much. The best stories in this book are (IMO) without a doubt Henry Sugar and The Hitchiker b/c I think they're the most interesting and creative. I read it once when I was really young just because it was by Roald Dahl, but I don't think I understood all of the stories, especially The Swan. I would recommend it for older children and adults.

Delightful Stories by the Exciting Author Roald Dahl
Contains: THE BOY WHO TALKED WITH ANIMALS A wierd tale about a boy who decides to run away on a giant sea turtle. I gave away the end, but you'll have to read the well-written middle. THE HITCHHIKER The short tale of a fingersmith ( talented pickpocket ). THE SWAN A dramatic story of an intelligent, unconquerable young boy and the child thugs who terrorize him. THE MILDENHALL TREASURE From the back of the book:"A true tale of a fortune found and an opportunity lost." THE WONDERFUL STORY OF HENRY SUGAR Tells of the deep, Indian ( that is, from India ) secret: how to activate the senses without their instrument functioning ( i.e., to see without eyes, smell without the nose, hear without the ears, etc. ), and of the two people, Imhrat Khan and Henry Sugar, who dared to use it improperly. LUCKY BREAK-HOW I BECAME A WRITER Exactly what the title says. Includes some interesting characters we didn't see from "BOY" and some other great moments. PIECE OF CAKE FIRST STORY-1942 A poorly written story about the author's accident as a RAF fighter that changed his life. Then again, it was his first story, so I shouldn't be so critical.

The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, a review by Purna Shah

Lookin for a good book while browsing through the bookstore? Pick up this. I know that you'll read one sentence and then you'll be hooked on it through the entire two hundred something pages. It is a Dahl masterpiece. Dahl is my favorite writer of all time, but this is his best. Dahl is a unboring classical writer, even though he hasn't been elected as one.

I have read all of his books and short stories (except for the out of print ones) and they are the best. Even his adult ones I've read. But this, as I said, is the best. It is my prized posession. The only problem is that my copy is not a hardcover. Seven stories, with the style of a writer who has been wishing at a genie to be the best writer ever. The stories are: THE BOY WHO TALKED WITH ANIMALS, THE HITCHHIKER, THE SWAN, THE MILDENHALL TREASURE, THE WONDERFUL STORY OF HENRY SUGAR, LUCKY BREAK: HOW I BECAME A WRITER, and A PIECE OF CAKE. You must buy a copy of this!

Mr. Hoppy's Luck
If you like short exciting stories you might want to read Esio Trot! My favorite charckter is Alfie. Alfie is a tortesio that Mrs. Silver likes. Mrs. Silver is a lady that Mr. Hoppy falls in love with. Mr. Hoppy is the man that lives right above Mrs. Silver. Mr. Hoppy wished that he could be Alfie because Mrs. Silver likes Alfie then Mr. Hoppy. Then Mrs. Silver started to say she wanted Alfie to start growing. Thats were Mr. Hoppy got his idea to buy 140 turtels and every day he would switch the tortioses every day right before Mrs. Silver comes home from work. The setting took place in the hotel but it was mostly in the hotel balcony. This book is fantasy because tortioses can't be that small. Here are other books by Raold Dahl The Withes and James and the Giant Peach.

Esio Trot
Mr.Hoppy secretly loves Mrs.Silver, but doesn't want to tell her. She has all her love for a tortoise named Alfie. He's so small that Mrs.Silver wants him to grow bigger. Mr.Hoppy gives Mrs. Silver a scroll. The scroll has tortoise langage on it. Mrs.Silver says these words to Alfie mornings and nights. Mr.Hoppy has a secret plan. He is going to buy as many tortoises as he can. Every day when Mrs.Silver is at work, Mr.Hoppy switches Alfie with one of the tortoises he bought. Then Mrs.Silver wants Alfie to grow a bit smallerause he won't fit to his house. So Mr.Hoppy switches Alfie with a smaller tortoise. They find out that they love each other and they marry. I think this book was great. It is one of my favorite Roald Dahl books!

Esio Trot
Esio Trot has characters named Mr.Hoppy and Mrs.Silver. Mr.Hoppy went to all the petshops in town and got 140 tortoises to try to trick Mrs. Silver into believing that he made her tortoise, Alfie grow bigger. I like this book, it is cool and also it's nice to read. It is funny. I think Roald Dahl should write another book to let us know what happened to Mr. Hoppy and Mrs. Silver. The book is fun to read because of the characters.

Useful, practical reading.
You really get some tips to audit the processes in your company. Definitely a must-read for any executive in a bigger firm. Smaller firms normally have other things to worry about.

You want to run a KM project? Then READ THIS BOOK
Knowledge Management is a pretty complex subject, and I'm not going to try to detail everything that's covered in this book.
What I will say is this:

1. The book is comprehensive
2. The authors REALLY know what they're talking about
3. The book is packed with spot-on insights and excellent advice
4. There are a wealth of checklists that will help you to focus on what really matters
5. The book is well written (easy to read without being simplistic or patronising)
6. The authors REALLY know what they're talking about. And yes, I KNOW I said that already - But it is SO imnportant, and so rare!

At the time that I read this book I was working on a KM project for a subsidiary of one of the major comms companys in the UK. They chose to ignore the advice these authors provide, and today they're just one more company stuck on the "Oh we'd rather downsize than develop some genuine expertise" road to oblivion.

It is my perception that if they'd followed the advice in this book they would have had fewer layoffs and would be a lot more financially successful, today.

But they didn't, they didn't - and they aren't!.

You want to be amongst the IT winners? Read and use the information in this book.

You want to be a loser? Just ignore this book.

IT'S THAT SIMPLE.

How I rated George¿s Marvelous medicine
Have you ever had a rotten relative that you would like to get rid of? Well this is the book for you.

Hello!

My name is Natasha. I read the book George's Marvelous medicine

This book is written by: Roald Dahl

This book is wonderful. It's about a boy named George. George has a grandma that acts like a wicked witch. Throughout the book George tries to make medicine that would make his nasty grandma be nice.

I really like this book because the author describes the medicine and the characters and what happens to them so well that I could picture it in my mind.

I recommend this book to kids who have wild imaginations and like to make pretend potions.

Georges Marvelous Medicine-Rhoal Dahl-Quentin Blake
George's Marvelous Medicine - Roald Dahl
Illustrated - Quentin Blake Revied by Bonnie F. age8

Did you ever live with a grumpy crazy old grandma? George did.
So...one day when both his parents are out &George has to give his grandma her medicine,
he realizes his grandma's medicine just made her grumpier. So , he decides to make his own
medicine. To make his own medicine, he goes roaming around the house putting in anything
he was allowed to touch. If you want to find out what happens, read the book!!I would recommend this book to children ages five & up who love fiction because this
is some of the best fiction ever written by one of the best fiction writers in the world in my opinion !! I've noticed a silly message: if you're dealing with a grumpy old grandma, you can be a little creative... just like George was!!
I liked when George sang that stupid song because after I read it I laughed my fool head off!! I think this is the perfect book for children that like to laugh!
If you like this book you can read his other books too!!

Hilarious book!! Fabulous for all ages!! Also adults!
George's Marvelous Medicine is a fantastic book, for all ages! It's hilarious and will make anyone laugh. Once you start reading this book you won't be able to get your nose out of it!!! I would rate this book a most definite five, or the highest rating possible!!! I read this while I was on vacation and no one could get me to go anywhere! The plot was set in the English countryside, where an eight year old boy, named George was stuck with his horrid grandma, who told him all sorts of terrible stories that frightened him to death! Eventually, George got so fed up with the obnoxious old hag, that he made up a special medicine, to replace her regular daily medicine. The medicine works wonders, and makes the grandma taller than a house, and very spunky!! If you enjoy strange and wonderful humor, fun and exciting books, or Roald Dahl books, I strongly reccomend this!!!

Boy: Tales of Childhood

Boy a book of joys and pains
Roald Dahl brings alive a collections of sweet little anecdotes with his famous book, Boy. A heart-warming story of what it was like being a kid in the early 20th century. When we look back at his childhood it looks somewhat crazy and different to us. Certain events seem barbaric to us, while others just seem strange. He is writing at some time may seem easy and better fit for a child but, reading it as an adult can also be great because it can remind you of your childhood. It was a great read but at some times it seems difficult to stay with it because there is not a greater emphasis on what one or another. He talks the same way about almost losing his nose and having fun with his friends. I give it 2 and a half stars for its realism and direct view on life as a child back in the 20's and 30's but it gets tiresome pretty fast.

Boy review
In the book Boy, by Roald Dahl, he describes his life in chronological order, making his life story easy to follow. Boy is very descriptive and gives a vivid picture of an English school boy's daily life in the early 1900's. Dahl describes in detail the violent punishments given so freely at boarding school. Those punishments taught him to mistrust adults because, in most cases, they unjustly punished students.

Dahl's writing style reaches out to a younger crowd rather than an older crowd. As is evident in most of his books, his view of life is that of a young person, and it is as this young person that he conveys his philosophy: corporal punishment is wrong, parents should support their children, and people should follow their dreams.

He compares his life to the lives of young people today. He actually comes out of the book and speaks to the reader. This is a good technique because the reader can personally relate to the book. I would highly recommend this autobiography to anyone interested in looking at a person's daily conflicts through a childlike perspective.

Very entertaining.
Everyone remembers the good and bad times of childhood. The games played in the backyard, or being tricked into eating mud. Everyone has stories to tell. In the book Boy, Tales of Childhood, Roald Dahl writes about his childhood up through grade school. He gives detailed description of racing tricycles down hills, playing practical jokes on the woman at the sweet shop, and getting beat with a cane by the headmaster. Roald Dahl uses great description and humourous vocabulary to portray every character he encounters. Though this book is written for children, it is fun for people of all ages to read.

WOW What a great way to STOP AGING!
Jean Carper has done a wonderful job of relating what the medical profession and researh have proven to be that elusive prescription to the fountain of youth. I quite agree with the 9th reviewer here on Amazon.com has written in her review.

I have been on such prescription for about 20 years now so I am giving testimony to Carper's prescription. Everybody on the planet earth should read and implement the directions in this book because we should learn to live up to our fullest potential and staying healthy is necessary to do that. We have lost, prematurely, many of our great brains because they abused their bodies with bad food, booze, and poor mental and physical health.

Informative and usefull
I love this book so much. It's full of information the average person can easily put to use every day. It's written in a way that's straight-forward and easy to understand. You can just zip right through it without falling asleep. Let's face it, nobody is reading this book for the entertainment value. Jean Carper's style is right on the mark, just give the information is a simple way, never long-winded. There is something in here for everyone. Even a couch potato could read this book, basically stay a couch potato, but still get something out of this book is they follow some of the advice in here. There are no gimmicks in here, just practical information you can put to good use every day.

very informative
The most important question this book answered for me, was why should someone who eats a sound diet take supplements. I was surprised to learn that, because of all the toxins and stress we are exposed to, a healthy person who doesn't take supplements still runs the risk of getting cancer, cataracts, and other degenerative diseases. The first part of the book deals with the supplements you need to take. The author covers the findings, the dosage and the form you should take. She also discusses 'how much is too much' for each supplement. Then she advices you which foods to avoid (too much iron can make you age, too!) and why. 12 supplements are covered, and three are essential( vitamins E, C and beta carotene), according to the author's research. 5 anti-aging foods are discussed, as well. Even if you are already a cancer patient or aging, the findings indicate that you can reverse the damage, with time. The book was very easy to understand, and fun to read, if you are into improving your health.

Another Shaara Masterpiece
When "Rise To Rebellion" was released last year, it was advertised as part 1 of a 2 part novel of the American Revolution. I decided to wait for part 2 to be published and then I would read them one after the other. I've just finished part 1 and consider it an extraordinarily interesting and well-written volume. Shaara's style is, as in his Civil War works, to follow key participants in a very personal way, making use of fictional dialogue. Fictional, but quite believable. I found this book far more entertaining than the best-selling "John Adams" biography. Shaara covers all the famous pre-1776 events--the Boston Tea Party, Bunker Hill, Paul Revere's ride, Lexington and Concord--in a fluid manner that places each event into the overall framework of the Revolution. This book concludes with the signing of the Declaration of Independence (what was the only colony not to vote yes at the initial vote?) and I can't wait to get going on part 2, "The Glorious Cause".

Another wonderful book by the Jeff Shaara
This is yet another wonderful book from the pen of Jeff Shaara. If you have read any of Mr. Shaara's other works then it is safe to assume that you will enjoy this book just as well.

For those who have yet to discover Mr. Shaara's books...

"Rise to Rebellion," covers the span of time from the "Boston Massacre" of 1770 to the Declaration of Independence in 1776, the formative years of the American Revolution. The events that led up to the signing of the Declaration of Independence are brought to life and told through the unique perspectives of some of its most famous participants, John Adams, Ben Franklin, George Washington, and the British General, Thomas Gage.

Their lives and the events surrounding and involving them are carefully interwoven to create a marvelous book. If you think you learned the real history of our split up from Britain in school, and that you know everything that is going to happen in this book, think again. Mr. Shaara has done a wonderful job of researching our early history and has reawoken many of the issues and events that were so vital to the rebellion, but are now lost to our school texts.

I can't wait for the second volume to be published and wonder what topic Mr. Shaara will move choose to write about after that.

Beginning the Revolution - Shaara style
The Shaaras, father and son, have perfected a writing style for historical novels that is easy to read, and gives the reader excellent views of the human side of our history. In fact, their works "humanize" the great figrues of America's past, beginning with the three book series on the Civil War, the one book on the Mexican War, and now this first book, of two, on the Revolution. We get to peer inside the minds of some of our Founding Fathers, and their British adversaries, and all of these folks appear to be more like us rather than stiff figures read about in dusty history books. I like this type of writing, and as long as it stays as true as possible to the historical record, which it appears to be doing, I will continue to read these works. I hope Jeff Shaara does not run out of American history epochs about which to write, because he is doing all of us a favor in bringing these folks to life. We need lving, breathing people to admire, not icons who seem to be inaccessible.

Wonderful book - but is it really young adult?
I absolutely love this book. Roald Dahl is a gripping and suspenseful writer who manages to captivate the reader with a limited amount of gore. The only thing is that this book is listed as young adult, which is probably decided by the publisher, but the subject matter is pretty strong, so parents might want to read it themselves first before giving to their children! I would say 15 or older would enjoy the book, but 11-14 depends on the child.

Very Entertaining!
Roald Dahl is a wonderful short story writer. He introduces all the characters in a very descriptive manner and ends his storys with twists that will make you want to read them over and over agian. I thoroughly enjoyed every one of the stories but when reccommend them to teenagers 13 and above as some of them have a vast range of vocbulary that is sometimes confusing. I would suggest this book to all my friends. It is definitely worth buying! :)

Excellent book
Roald Dahl has always been one of my favorite children's book writers. It wasn;t until I picked up his other stroy collection, the Umbrella man, that I realized he was also a wonderful short story writer. This book is simply fabulous. "Lamb to the Slaughter," "The Surgeon" and the title story were my favorites. Every story also has Dahl's quintessential dark humor, which is something I've always enjoyed in his books. Everyone should read this and the umbrella man and be introduced to another side of roald Dahl.

True to life moments
I enjoyed this book, Russo populates his novels with realistic characters, and in this case it is the residents of the small town of Empire Falls. Miles Roby, the soon to be divorced protaganist, struggles with his family situation and his future. Miles runs the Empire Grill, owned by the elusive matriarch of the town, whose impact on Miles' life has been huge from his perspective. There are other well crafted characters; Max Roby, Miles' never do well father who nonetheless thrives (reminiscent in some ways to Sully in Russo's novel Nobody's Fool); Jimmy Minty, the police officer who has a simmering resentment towards against Miles; his son Zack who is on again off again with Miles' daughter improbably nicknamed "Tick"; Walt Comeau, a shady yet affable character who is marrying Miles' wife; and the mysterious kid in art class who doesn't say a word and seems to harbour a great secret.

Most of all, it is a tale of real life, of regret about choices made, and the joys and heartbreaks of everyday people. If I had one problem at times it was Russo's tendency to hit you over the head with each new revelation, instead of letting the plot unfold more slowly and subtly. I recommend this novel very much, if it seems that not much seems to happen, hang in there, it is very rewarding. There are some moments at the end that don't ring true, but most of it does, and this book stayed with me afterwards.

Exceptional
Small town living has trapped Miles Roby into a life that he has never wanted. He finds himself constantly at the beck and call of Empire Falls matriarch Francine Whiting, plagued by his reprobate father Max and ex-wife Janine while he struggles to make a decent living for his teenage daughter Tig. The memories Miles holds dear are about to be shattered in a compelling story filled with twists and turns that quickly shatter any illusion the reader may have of small town America.

Richard Russo has brought a number of wonderful colorful characters to life in his book that stay with you long past the end of the story. This is one of those books that I found difficult to put down yet wanted to last so I could savor each word. I highly recommend this book to one and all as one of the best books I've read this year

Patient readers will be rewarded...
I will admit that about halfway through Empire Falls, I put it away for a few days. Although fascinating in its nuance and delightful in its humor, it was beginning to plod (so I thought) and I began to wonder whether it quite deserved the prestiguous prize on its cover.

Little did I realize the expertise of its author. He knows exactly what he's doing, bringing a complex tale to a slow boil. When the fever of rumination breaks toward the end, when something big really does happen, the reader is that much more taken by it because Russo has done more than introduce the characters--he has brought you into their lives, into their heads, and you genuinely care about their fate. Every one of the citizens in Empire Falls is a real, complex, believable person. At least once I had to remind myself that this heartbreaking tale, so vividly funny and genuinely tragic, is a work of fiction.

That Russo teases humor from sadness in such a natural, graceful way would make The Empire Falls a remarkable book. What makes it literature is its relevance, its reality, the fact that it might as well be a true story because that's how deeply it registers with the reader.
