The Fundamentals of Fine Woodworking
Published in Paperback by Sterling Publications (1996)
Authors: Robert Ferencsik and Will Neptune
Amazon base price: $17.95
Average review score:

A great book for hand tool and joint layout basics...
This book is basically the "textbook" for the Fundamentals of Fine Woodworking workshop taught at the prestigious North Bennet St. School in Boston. It starts by talking about layout principles and the use of a reference surface. Then you move on to Wood Technology where you learn all about wood movement. Next you learn to sharpen bench chisels and planes. The section on the bench planes is particularly useful, because it covers much more than just sharpening the blade iron. You also learn how to tune-up the other parts of the plane which are just as important in getting good results. The book then goes on to show you how to flatten and square up boards using the plane, how to tune-up and properly use a marking guage, how to cut mortise & tenon and various dovetails joints by hand. The book is full of great illustrations and is very detailed in it's explanations, not only of how to do something, but why. Even though this book concentrates entirely on the use of hand tools, the concepts it describe about reference surfaces and layout are just as applicable as when you, say, setup and cut dovetail joints when using a router. If you are like I was, owning a bunch of handtools like planes and chisels, but not really knowing the proper way to tune them up and use them to get good results, then this book is for you.

George Jones Ceramics
"George Jones Ceramics" has been well researched and is beautifully presented. It is about a major 19th century English pottery business, of which little was known before Robert Cluett's book. Archived collections and histories of nineteenth century potteries have generally been neglected in favour of older potteries and because of museum financial constraints. But they all have a place in the history of ceramics and until this book was produced there were fears that much information about George Jones Pottery would be lost forever. The best part of this beautiful book, for my family, is the history of George Jones' family and descendents which is included. George Jones was my husband's great grandfather.

Ramblin thru the Unseen Rockies
After reading this material, I would strongly recommend the avid frontiersman to the novice to take advantage of Brown's testimony to lost and unseen towns that "once were." Brown's attention to detail is above no other; the exquisit portraits he provides makes you shiver in anticipation and almost to a point, turn back in time to actually see how we might have lived during this now lost and not too distant era.

I recommend this book highly.

Simple, Stylish and Groovey
On first flick I thought Yeah Great! the stuff in this book really nice and I'd love to have most of it somewhere in my house...where can I buy them!! On second read I soon started to relise that producing great finishes on furniture, lamp shades, curtains, floors and walls is not as hard as it looks and even someone like ME can achieve it. This book is fantastically laid out with big colourful, basic pictures which take you through the procedures step by step from start to finished product. It's an excellent book if you want some great, and visually stunning effects around the house without needing a degree in interior or graphic design. There are even templates in the back if you want to use the patterns straight from the book. There are also many different colour samples if you're not to sure of what colours go well together. It's also great for making gifts too! If you like to dabble in a little bit of art and craft then this book should definately make it to your bookshelf.
