Racism, Sexism, Power and Ideology (Critical Studies in Racism and Migration)
Published in Hardcover by Routledge (1995)
Author: Colette Guillaumin
Amazon base price: $90.00
Average review score:

Excellent Critical Analysis of Race & Gender Concepts
You may agree with her -- you may disagree -- but this book of translated essays will surely bend your mind in re-thinking your common sense ideas about the categories of race & gender. Guillaumin is a materialist feminist, which means she is greatly influenced by Marxian philosophies that have developed in France in the last half-century and sensitive to the ideological bases of power with respect to "minorities" and women in society. Her analysis of race led her to extend analytical application of these ideas to gender, making her conclusions regarding gender more "radical" than her statements on race.

Guillaumin's historical exploration of the rise of bourgeoisie as well as her analysis of naturalism as a worldview are important and deserving of reflection. I recommend this challenging (yet approachable) text to anyone interested in applying their critical thinking skills to the continuing issues of race and gender that are so pervasive in our contemporary society.

Retreat from Love

The Final book of the Claudine Novels. . . .
I was so happy to find this book after thinking that 'Claudine and Annie' of the four Claudine books was the last we could read of her. In this book, Colette expands upon the friendship between Claudine and Annie, and shows what becomes of the latter's timid personality and what stepson Marcel has developed into. But Claudine is the same delightful Claudine, who writes of pain, of friendship, of personal relationships, of nature, of animals freely now, uninhibited by society. For how flowing and relaxing the book reads, there are some major changes to the plot, most noticably in the end. A lovely book for anyone who wants to keep up with Claudine, or who enjoys the later works of Colette.

The Romance of the Book
Published in Hardcover by Birch Brook Pr (1995)
Authors: Marshal Brooks, Marshall Brooks, and Colette
Amazon base price: $75.00

Old-fashioned, romantic, wonderful
If you feel in any way romantic about books, if you think they are more than paper furniture, if you cannot even imagine a future where all text is stored digitally, this is the book for you.

Even before actually reading the essays collected inside, you will notice it is something special: The book is not your average slick paperback - it is printed by letterpress, and the cardboard cover doesn't show a shiny, colorful photograph but a monochrome woodcut.

This is an unashamedly old-fashioned book. Inside, you find excerpts from texts by Faith Baldwin and Stephanie Greene, Leigh Hunt and Malcolm X, and many others. A book for book lovers, for romantics, for anyone and everyone in any way affiliated with books.

If you enjoyed "Ex Libris" by Anne Fadiman and "Bookworms" by Carol and Graf, you will love this book!

Staging Strikes: Workers' Theatre and the American Labor Movement (Critical Perspectives on the Past)

Author: Colette A. Hyman
Amazon base price: $41.50

A Rare Treat: Great Analysis, Smooth Prose
Colette Hyman's analysis of the topic is insightful and engaging. Her book is tremendouly informative and insightful. What makes her book stand out among the greatest books on the Depression era, however, is the skill with which she presents her argument. Her writing ability is unparalled. She could make any topic seem like the most interesting revelation. I read this book in one sitting, and I don't even care for the subject matter. I was just doing research.

The Way of Dreams & Visions

A must have on your bookshelf
For years I have had dreams, and at the same time frustrated without finding anyone to interpret them, always playing a guessing game. My biggest dilemma was not finding anyone with a scriptural interpretation, until I came across The Way of Dreams and Visions. This book taught me how to identify and interpret my own dreams and others' as well, giving the believers the foundation that they needed to go on and press forward to what the Lord has for them. In the Way of Dreams and Visions, the author explains the warning dreams, the prophetic dreams, the dreams that are not of the Lord. This is a must have for every believer, I highly recommend it.

Woman as Church : the challenge to change

Author: Claire Colette Murphy
Amazon base price: $14.00

In or Out-that is the question !
The author is fearless in confronting many modern church issues of a controversial nature. Many of the reflective questions at the end of each chapter could well serve as a springboard for discussion. Hopefully clergy might use them in dialog with women as a means to better understanding of the anger and confusion in many catholic women who are struggling with the church's response to the controversial issues. In or out-thay is the question this book might answer!

fast pace, engaging, brilliant use of language
Martha McFerren is simply one of the best poets I know. Her poetry deals with themes of popular culture and the wacky juxtapositions contemporary life serves up as daily fare. A fascinating, multi-layered, often hilarious excursion down the great metaphorical U.S. highway...ride on.

Creative and imaginative, but not do-able at (my) home
This book has beautiful cakes in it that are so beautiful and original. I found them a little difficult, however, to put into practice! Some are definitely acheivable, but others require equipment, such as an airbrush, which is beyond my baking abilities! I still enjoy the book to look at and use it for ideas. I just don't make the exact cakes she does. I preferred The Ultimate Birthday Cake book much more, although the cakes aren't the calliber of Ms. Peters.

Inspiration from the Best in Cakes
Colette Peters is a master of cake design and artistry. She shows us that baking can transcend the limits of the kitchen, and delve into the canvas and paints of the artist. It is no surprise to discover that Miss Peters is a trained artist. It is also not a surprise to discover that her work graces the tables of Bette Midler, the White House, and Tiffany's at Christmastime.

This brightly-colored book is arranged topically: Signs of the Zodiac (12 designs), Flowers of the Month (4 designs), Birthstones (3 designs), and Assorted Party Cakes (14 designs). There are also two chapters devoted to Basic Recipes and Basic Instructions. Miss Peters has thoughtfully included a list of Sources for equipment and supplies at the back of the book.

Each design includes: Number of Servings, List of Ingredients, paragraph-form instructions on how to assemble and decorate the cake, a full-color photograph, and patterns (most patterns require enlargements).

While the instructions are specific, and basic instructions at the back of the book are extensive, I would not consider this a book for the beginning cake decorator. More advanced and intermediate cake decorators will enjoy creating their own cakes based on these ideas. This is a wonderful gift for the aspiring cake decorator.

What a beautiful book!
What a beautiful book! I recently received this book as a birthday gift and found it to be better than any actual cake I've ever had (no one in my family bakes anything edible---it's gotten so we just blow the candles out & eat the ice cream) These cakes are unlike anything I've ever seen; they are lovely, lovely works of art and I don't see how anyone could bear cutting into one! What a wonderful talent Miss Peters has! I'm inspired to find her other books....maybe I'll even try making one.....any cake is edible with enough ice cream! Buy this book! It will make you happy!
