My two-year-old's favorite book
This is my two-year-old's favorite book. She understands the humor of the story: a farmer rocks his baby goodnight, and then rocks each of his farm animals goodnight (including his horse and cow. You'll have to see the book to understand how he is able to rock such large animals). The pictures are wonderful, the words are few. Your child will ask for it again and again.

Lullaby in book form
This is a sweet lttle book for younger children. After you've read it a few times they begin to join in the reading. An easy book for them to memorize. My son always thinks it would be funny if the farmer would rock his wife :)

A lasting favorite for our two small children
Simple text and colorful pictures make it a first rate introduction to reading; both our kids learned how to sit through a bedtime story with this soothing tale of a barnyard evening. We ALL want to know where the mouse went at the end!

TERRIFIC BOOK
Iam amazed that SOUP CITY BLUES is Mr. Brown's first book. It reads fast, and so powerful that I could feel the pain that each boy must have experienced. I think that every young boy should read the book. Too many young boys are growning up with no direction in their lives and no one that understands what they are feeling except their friends. SOUP CITY BLUES proves that there's a better life and a way out. The message is clear in the book. I do hope that Mr. Brown will continue to write other books because his style in writing is unique and realistic.

A Brilliant Voice for American Male Youth
I absolutely loved Mr Browns book! It should be required reading, especially for male youth. His book gives the reader a real inside view of male teens transitioning into adulthood.

Soup City Blues gives the outsider, an inside view of male teens and how they characterize the world around them. Four young men share descriptions of family, friends, school, community, industry, culture and a transitioning of American culture. Many of thier descriptions placed me accurately in my own youth and community.

Mr. Brown writes in a way that allows us an inside take on the views and conversations young men have. He eloquently shares their experiences with us so that we vicariously place ourselves into their fantacies, fears, pain and pure amusement of life.

At times I felt the story very real and personal; it touched my life and gave me more understanding of young men today in their quest to find an identity and a place in this world. A world where everyone expects a young man to know who and what he will be before he even understands himself or the world.

It was a gripping tale of young men coming of age at the same time the new world itself was coming of age. It was far too short, I wanted more and will eagerly await the sequel or more from this author. I like his witty, inciteful and brutally honest writing. Mr. Brown is well on his way to helping us all understand ourselves. He has also found an intelligent voice from which we really hear and understand American youth.

Where is Soup City?
I thought the book was an excellent description about how some teenagers grow up in an urban environment. It aptly describes what can happen when teenagers are unsupervised for long periods of time.

This book will serve as a motivational source for not only African American youth, but for all minorities. By reading this book, they will learn that it is necessary to have a strong belief that they can succeed in life if they put forth the effort.

Our youth must learn that there is a place for them in our society. It is our responsibility to make sure, through books like Soup City Blues, that they know that they can become successful. We must make sure they learn the importance of believing in themselves.

Wonderful stories. Unblemished prose.
These short stories constitute some of the best in the English language. They have quite a range in tone, from the extreamely humorous Unrest Cure to the mystery of Sredni Vashtar. Only The Easter Egg diappoints. Written in an Edwardian prose that never disappoints, read it like it was one of life's little luxuries.

excellent
black comedy at its best. not for everyone. read only one story at any given sitting, or the flavor and the impact goes away. One of the Best short storie collections ever printed.

Electric Power Distribution Reliability (Power Engineering, 14)

Very Helpful and Full of Content
This book covers it all: causes of reliability, measures of reliability, component modeling, system modeling, system analysis, and system optimization. It even has a great primer on distribution systems from a reliability perspective.

The great thing about this book is its ability to bridge the gap between theoretical treatment and practical applications. Although it is full of algorithms and equations, all are presented in the context of real applications and real results. It has truly broadened my understanding of of the subject.

A Great Combination of Rigor and Practical Advice
This is by far the best book I have seen on reliability planning, evaluation and engineering of electric power delivery systems. The book is well organized and very linear in its progression through its topics, so its makes for a very good textbook or self-study guide, as was the case for me. It has an extremely comprehensive index, which means its should serve as a good, quick reference in the future.

The book is pretty rigorous, and has a good bit of equations and theory, but what I appreciated is that there is a lot of common sense and good recommendations throughout, plus good data and tables on reliability, equipment, expectations, etc. I learned just a lot about distribution systems and reliability, and what to expect and how to make improvements in the real world, from this book.

But what I think is unique about this book and its greatest value was its combination of rigorous analysis of system configuration and indidivual equipment focus. You find a lot of stuff written that focuses on one or the other. There are books and technical papers on methods to analyze systems based on layout, load, switching capabilities, etc. (configuration), but they are often theoretical and neglect issues of equipment. There are also books on equipment lifetime versus loading analysis, condition evaluation and assessment, and maintainability. But rarely are the two combined well, and in one whole analytical method.

This is one of the best engineering books I have.

Nice
I loved reading the book so much, I keep reading it over and over again.

Funny and vivid
It is surprising how funny Conan Doyle could be sometimes. Brigadier Gerard is a wonderfully conceited, rather dim-witted but brave and generous-hearted cavalry officer in Napoleon's Army. His adventures are a delight to read.

"Correspondence, Mr. Brown."
Too often are works of historical note written with cold dispassion. You won't find any dry writing here. Hinton manages to encapsulate the drama and tension of the period in grand style. To those looking for simply a overview of the Harpers raid, be prepared for an information overload that includes biographies, primary excerpts and a rousing tale of cathartic proportions.

I discovered that my ancestor, John Henry Kagi was a Raider.
I was searching for my ancestors through the Keagy line and found this book. In it, I discovered that John Henry Kagi, an earlier form of the spelling "Keagy", was one of John Brown's men. Later I found another book about John Henry Kagi entitled, "John Henry Kagi and His Old Log Cabin Home." I am interested in learning more about Keagy Family Line and especially John Henry Kagi. My wife and I traveled to Harper's Ferry, VA to visit the site of John Brown's raid. Unfortunately, the papers and photographs of John Henry Kagi were damaged in the Spring flood. It was a great disappointment to us. The only records that we have are the information that I gained through those books, "John Brown and His Men," and "John Henry Kagi and His Old Log Cabin Home." Both of these books covered the raid on Harper's Ferry and gave me a wealth of new facts about John Henry Kagi. It brought history to life and presented a hero to my family.

Reality Check
A well written, eye opener of a book! This book explains the basic dental procedures we've all endured with emphasis on how that dental work affects our health. The authors include a very interesting perspective of dental history, current procedures, solutions to previously performed faulty procedures, and even some well founded nutritional advice. This is a must read for anyone with chronically ill health or for anyone who desires to make well informed decisions regarding their health. I never would have thought a book on dentistry and health could ever be such a "page-turner"!

The Key to Ultimate Health
This book was a wonderful eye opener to the world of holistic dentistry. Dr. Hansen's techniques and data are so up to date that what I had been learning and reading from other book on the same topic were all outdated. This book has completley changed how I am having my dentistry, and how my family is having dentistry. My father is a dentist and after reading htis he is seriously re evaluating his practice. This book is even easy for the lay person to read and understand. It goes over mercury removal, detoxing, how the entire body and nutritional aspect play a role as well. I was even able to prevent a rool canal from being done. I would strongly advise that before any dental treatment people read this bookto at least know what there options are as a consumer. So many times we are in the dark as to whatother alternatives are out there. Not with this book.

"Most of the Good Stuff: : Memories of Richard Feynman
Published in Hardcover by Springer Verlag (1993)
Authors: Laurie M. Brown, John S. Rigden, and Richard Phillips Feynman
Amazon base price: $39.95
Average review score:

The Most Personally Satisfying of All the Feynman Books
Divided into seven sections (The Early Years, At Los Alamos, The Cornell Years, The Research Physicist at Caltech, The Teacher at Caltech, The Public Physicist and Consultant, and Feynman--The Man), this fine book presents Richard Feynman as he was seen by those closest to him--his friends and colleagues. To their credit, they present him as they knew him, the qualities with the flaws.

The book is especially successful in communicating Feynman's way of thinking, the processes he used in attacking problems. The essay entitled "Richard Feynman and the Connection Machine" by W. Daniel Hills is notably successful in this regard, and by itself justifies the purchase of the book. I found it especially interesting that Feynman was fascinated, as I am, by the potential of cellular automata for modeling fluids. Readers with the same interest should also consider purchasing Seek! by Rudy Rucker.

Five or so essays by other physicists who knew Feynman contain mathematics that is proably beyond the ability of the average reader (certainly mine), but even these contain gems of insight that reward readers who wade through them.

All in all, a most satisfying experience.

Anyone who has followed Feynman should read this
Fascinating and insiteful lectures from many of the great people in the world of physics. Amusing anecdotes, touching tributes, and glimpses into the private life of a genius who was also extremely human and persevered through very painful personal problems to help create the atomic bomb while his wife was seriously ill, yet keeping his spirits up and his sense of humor. Never a person to rest on his laurels Feynman is shown in this book as a person who listened intently to other people's theories, no matter how odd they sounded and never assumed anything was right or wrong until he worked it out for himself from first principles. It's all here, his life, his work, his friends, family and colleagues - but most of all his spirit.

The true story of the Battle of Britain
The true story of the Battle of Britain. This book is a good read. It's about the planning of the Battle of Britain on German side, and the planning of the British defense, on the British side. If the Battle of Britain had succeeded, it would have been the first successful cross-Channel invasion since William the Conqueror in 1066. Hitler's half-hearted attempt at an invasion was bungled from the start. He didn't count on Britain being prepared. He was expecting Britain to be like Poland and the Soviet Union with its planes on the ground like sitting ducks. Churchill had once said that French said that Britain would have her neck wrung like a chicken. Then he quipped "some chicken--some neck."

The definitive story of the Battle Britain read this book!
The definitive history of the Battle of Britain read this book! Operation Sea Lion is about the planned German invasion of Britain. It's also about the British countermeasures. Not many people know that the British removed the street signs from London's streets to confuse the Germans if they'd invaded. It also confused the British drivers. There are some editorial cartoons as well. One has a man on the telephone, he's probably a British Cabinet Minister or Sir Hugh "Stuffy" Dowding, and the caption's "Get me Messerschmitt 109." Operation Sea Lion was supposed to be like Operation Overlord--a cross- Channel invasion. The British were prepared and they defeated Goering's vaunted Luftwaffe.

Enjoyable, Educational and Most of All,...Inspirational!
This is a book that I constantly go to for photographic inspiration ever since I purchased it back in 1995. The photos are classic and the words are a pleasure to read for whatever reason you need, be it for pure enjoyment, to learn something or to break from a photographic rut.

A delightful book of photographs that inspire me daily.
A delightful volume of Vermont landscapes that are rural scenes of a vanishing lifestyle. As a photographer myself this volume which I have owned since publication in 1991 is a constant source of inspiration which I return to again and again.
