A toddler must have!
This has been my 3-year-old's favorite bedtime (and morning time, and afternoon time...) book since he was 2. The soothing rhymes are so relaxing. Beautifully illustrated. We've had the copy from our church library for so long we decided we needed to invest in our own. If you like Goodnight Moon, you'll love Little Donkey. If you don't care for Goodnight Moon, you'll love Little Donkey. A wonderful investment!

Love it, love it, love it
The sweet illustrations are nice and the wonderful rythym of this story is absolutely the best. It has a rhyming text that is peaceful and tranquil and the most wonderful thing to read your little ones (and maybe big ones) to sleep with. We love it.

A must for the 'go to sleep' library!
I love reading this book to my niece (age 3) and nephew (age 1) at bedtime--it's on their 'most requested' list! The illustrations are very beautiful and peaceful and the overall themes of love and security are just what children (and adults) need in this wild world! The soft sounds in the text of the story are very dreamy and sleep inducing. Lovely!

A favorite for generations
My parents enjoyed reading this book to me and my brother almost 50 years ago. Now I am thrilled when my two kids ask me to "read it again Dad!" Margaret Wise Brown bent the norm when she wrote this book. Mister Dog, aka Crispin Crispian, lives a great life and shares it willingly with rabbits, cats, other dogs, and a charming little boy. Brown was indeed wise to ask Garth Williams to do the illustrations because they illuminate the book, as well as the room in which you may be sitting to read the book, with warmth, delight, and amusement. If only this classic could be re-printed . . . more families could cuddle up to this tale of play and cooperation.

Mister Dog
I've had Mister Dog since i was a baby and loved it and still do. Unfortunately I've come to believe that i have the last remaining copy and its missing the back cover and have been hoping to get another copy. It is a great book, it gives great advice, the last page is brilliant.

Mister Dog, The Dog Who Belonged to Himself. That's it!
One of the most whimsical, quirky, endlessly entertaining (for the parents as well as the kids) books I've found (this one at a yard sale). Politically incorrect, Mister Dog lives in a 2-story doghouse, eats strawberries, walks himself, and smokes a corncob pipe. He meets and adopts a little boy who also belongs to himself, and the two independent souls begin to live together cooperatively and happily. Indescribably charming. One of Ms.Brown's best, and should be revived for all of us jaded parents who have to read the same story over and over again. This one holds up and makes us smile every time.

Beautiful
My two year old son loves looking at the pictures in this book. The baby looks so real. I was pleased to find a book that is simple enough for a 2 year old to enjoy it and so beautiful that an adult will love reading it as well. My son especially likes the picture of the lovely mother gazing down at her child. Although the art work and Wise's poetry are what make the book enjoyable, the fact that the characters are people of color make this book a must have for our family. Because it seems very unlikely that Jesus was a blonde with blue eyes, I want to present images of a more colorful Jesus to my son. I also appreciate the depiction of many wise men from the East, not just 3.

Stunning illustrations
I borrowed this book from the public library and found that it took my breath away. Author Margaret Wise Brown has done many of what are now considered classics such as RUNAWAY BUNNY,LITTLE ISLAND and GOODNIGHT MOON has one more to add to her collection. The illustrations by Cooper are amazing. The realistic pictures of the newborn baby (which remind me so much of my own sons when they were that small)in the manger are very moving. Some narrow-minded people may be put off by the fact that the main characters are African American and the book "appears" to be depicting the Holy family, although Brown's text does not actually indicate this. I also find it ironic that two different online bookstores that I went to for this title do not actually have the cover displayed. The illustrations depicting angels are absolutely gorgeous. I took the book to work to share it with my co-workers who would appreciate it and they agreed with me. I was very reluctant to take it back because I knew I would not be able to have it over the Christmas holiday. I just have to have this book for my personal collection to share with my two sons. This book celebrates the miracle of life and the joy of two parents gazing upon their son with hopes for the future. I hope this book wins an ALA (Caldecott or Coretta Scott King) award or awards this year.

The best childrens book ever
If you see a copy of this book, snap it up! it's wonderful, playful, and fun, with really witty photographs. I love it!

It follows a duck who goes out into the world to show the world what a duck is, with hilarious encounters with many other animals. it's very sweet, funny, and engaging at the same time.

I'm in my 20's, and I found this book hilarious. It tops my all time favorite childrens book of Go Dog Go!

Free as a Duck
It's not often that I run across a true masterpiece--and when I do, it's usually out of print. "The Duck" is truly one of the greatest books of all time. Deceptive in its simplicity, it will resonate with everyone who shares this grand purpose: TO SEE THE WORLD, AND TO SHOW THE WORLD A DUCK!

This stunning book rights old wrongs!
Garth Williams is a genius illustrator of the very best in children's books. You simply can't do better.

...But you can do worse. If you only know the GB editions of GW's books from the *1970's*, you'll be in for a wonderful shock from this book.

The image quality is 3X as good! So bright, sharp, distinctive and subtle in coloring. These are basically fine art plates. Lucky us! Part of it is probably due to the very high quality paper, but most of it has to be due to the LOVE OF THE ART on behalf of those who published this tribute Treasury.

But there's more. (And this is where it gets a bit nasty.) For some reason, in the *1970's* GB editions of these books, the publisher often DELETED PAGES! Several of the books featured in their ENTIRETY here have many pages that never appeared in the 1970's editions. And many of these pages feature the VERY BEST ART! It was so wonderful to finally find them here. ...Dismaying as well. What a crime! I can only imagine that the publisher was trying to save paper costs: they always killed pages in groups of 4. Can you imagine the low, venal insult to art and children in doing such a thing? Here's a real example of an artist pouring his heart out, but being thwarted by chiselers. Well, maybe there's another explanation: I hope so for the sakes of GB.

Thank heavens, wrongs are gloriously righted in this gorgeous new volume.

I daresay you will cherish it as one of your most favorite story books, if not your #1. Thanks!

Excellent book
"A Garth Williams Treasury of Best-Loved Books" is a must have, right up there with "The Golden Books Treasury of Elves and Fairies". Williams is one of the best children's illustrators. His drawings have such magic that anyone who sees them can remember them well after childhood is long gone, and leaves them with a hunger to see them again. This book is pleasingly large, appx. 12" x 10.5" and the drawings are nice and big. The stories featured in the collection are: A Tale of Tails; Baby Farm Animals; Three Bedtime Stories: The Three Little Kittens, The Three Little Pigs, The Three Bears; Animal Friends; The Golden Sleepy Book featuring: The Whispering Rabbit, Close Your Eyes, Going to Sleep; The Friendly Book; Home for a Bunny; The Sailor Dog; The Kitten Who Thought He Was a Mouse; and Mister Dog. The book is 149 pages long.

One of the Greats
Another classic from Margaret Wise Brown. Captures the wonderful essence of childhood that so many contemporary children's authors miss again and again. The illustrations are still fresh even though it was originally printed in 1950. The story is an uncommon blend of whimsey, fantasy and the unexpected. And...no one can make a movie out of it! Simplicity at its sparkling best. Buy one for every child you know.

spans the generations!
This was one of my favorite books when I was little, and I started reading the same copy of The Wonderful House to my little boy when he was just over a year old. It is still one of his very favorites at the ripe old age of 3. He of course has it memorized word for word. The illustrations are fantastic. Our copy is just about to be retired from use, how wonderful we can purchase a new one! It tells of many creatures and where they live. "Who lives here?" is on almost every spread, then the answer follows on the next page. The magical wonderful house appears and everyone tries to guess who lives there.

A Child's Goodnight Book
Three generations of our family have used this book at bedtime and our current copy is taped together! A soothing, rhythmic book that talks about pussycats, kangeroos, wild things in the forest, sailboats and engines all getting quiet and sleepy. My grandson saves it as the last book to read and he falls asleep by the time we finish the little prayer at the end. A very special book indeed!
