The One-Day MBA

A good idea yet the basic material is too regularly mediocre
These tapes may be a good summary of the ideas covered in an MBA program however the ideas are of average quality meaning that someone with an MBA would be qualified to maintain the status quo vs to seek a higher level of serving customers better in my view. The material may be more a reflection of University academia vs the real business world it seems to me. Several observers have noted that much of what is taught in many universities is material 20 years old (aka living in the past vs today).

Fair to Mediocre
I found the series of tapes to be a bit flat and not all that useful. However, Lerman and Turner have such thick accents that the series is worth a listen, if only for the humor of it all.

Descent, but not really standalone
This book was descent. It covered most of the material on the CNA exam. I have not yet taken any CNE tests. The disks left some to be desired and the book actually left a few things out. I don't recomend this book as your only resource for the CNA or CNE exams.

Pauline Christianity (Oxford Bible Series)
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (August, 1996)
Author: John A. Ziesler
Amazon base price: $65.00
Used price: $22.80
Average review score:

Pauline Christianity: Accurate, but unlike Paul, unenergetic
Learning about Paul's views by reading only the Bible or a commentary is too much work for most. This book is for some of those people: it provides a single source analysis of some fifty odd themes in Paul's view of Christianity. "Some" because while it aims to readable by the non-scholar, it still lies somewhere between scholarly and popular in readability. Though only 157 pages, the book is difficult to finish because of the wooden, analytical approach taken. It may be most useful as a theological reference on Pauline Christianity.

It struck me overall as consistent with mainline, evangelical Protestantism. While there were no dramatic new insights in the book for me, it did provide some useful insights. For example, Ziesler does a good job of responding to those who say, "Paul unnecessarily complicated the simple teaching of Jesus". Jesus was the message. The author points out that Paul's huge and singular achievement was to "... work out what this meant for the individual, the church, and the universe." "It obviously could not have been done by Jesus himself, because the materials for it were not available until his mission was accomplished." Well, obvious enough once stated. It fell to Paul to play the part of Supreme Court Justice, to work out the messy details of original intent and application in a changed and complicated humanity.

An author's work does not have to be exciting to communicate sound reason and insight, but there is a partnership between the writer and reader in this exchange. In this regard, I felt I was doing more than my share of the work in understanding and completing this book. It reads more like documentation of Paul's thought than it does a dynamic consideration of it. And this is where Ziesler lets Paul down: the passion of Paul is missing. The centrality of suffering in Paul's life is the evidence of Paul's passion, and it does not come through. Why does that matter? It matters because that passion, as much as any other theme, is a major part of Paul's "Pauline Christianity".

The Sound of Trumpets

political compromise receives a predictable poke
I loved Paradise Postponed. Even the name Leslie Titmuss makes me smile. Leslie reappears here, but the attention focuses on a wimpy candidate whom it's hard to root for. All seemed a bit tired, even the humor.

VBA For Dummies
Published in Paperback by For Dummies (August, 2003)
Author: John Paul Mueller
Amazon base price: $17.49
List price: $24.99 (that's 30% off!)

Not great. Does have some value.
I found this book nowhere near as helpful as other Dummies books on VBA programming. If you want another good starter book, I would recommend "Access 97 Programming for Dummies", which is full of real world examples that will help you understand VBA.

The author just seemed to get too cute with the subject matter. Also, the lack of real world examples really hurts this book. You can't step into object-oriented programming when you decide to invent your own objects for everything.

The explanation of how loops work is okay and the constants information is not bad. Overall, however, get a real technical book and try to learn it that way. It will be harder, but you will be better for it.

Better than fat VBA books
I tried using Access 97 Programming Unleashed to learn VBA. I got more out of the smaller VBA for Dummies book than the 850 page Unleased book. I especially liked the way it broke down the parts the VB Editor. This book doesn't try to do a lot of things like fat books do, but sticks to the main topic, VBA. I liked it because it's small and doesn't break my arm when I read it. On the less positive side it had isolated pieces of code that you can't really use without some expertise and it doesn't cover Access very well.

Not just for dummies!
I picked up this book at a local bookstore (sorry Amazon), mainly because it was the only VBA book they had. This book allowed me to learn a lot of the concepts of VBA programming, in connection with Word 97 Annoyances, and VB&VBA Programming in a Nutshell. I recommend it to beginning VB programmers, like I was. It helped me get above the basics, fast. It's easy to discount these Dummies books, and most of them are so "Dummy" that they aren't worth the effort, but this one is a good book.

McFarlane's foray into the world of The Crow
This book collects issues 7 - 10 and 4 of Todd McFarlane's short-lived Crow series. McFarlane bought the rights to the Crow, but the comic was cancelled after issue 10, because nobody really liked it. Jon J Muth does have a writing talent, unfortunately somebody made the mistake of trying to continue Eric Draven's story, rather than beginning anew.

If you decide to buy this book, do so only for the art, and not for the storyline. It's a shame, considering the vast talents McFarlane has at his disposal

Good photographs, but poorly prepared with bad information
Most of the photographs are good and the distribution maps fair but somewhat dated. The editing is atrocious with many mistakes in spelling and grammar. The information on the species contained is dated, incomplete, or false. Even one of the photographs is misidentified. Book is overpriced for the quality

This book was very unsatisfactory. I found a couple of major mistakes, and the order that the material is presented wasn't great. There are other, better books.
