How to Make a Book: An Illustrated Guide to Making Books by Hand
Published in Hardcover by Gaff Pr (July, 1993)
Author: John Paul Barrett
Amazon base price: $17.50

...a marvelous book...
This is a marvelous book, of potential interest to writers, small press and self-publishers, teachers, students, artists, or anyone who has an interest in cheap, effective methods for putting together books by hand. Barrett learned how to put books together through years of trial and error, and provides for the reader all of his hard-learned lessons and hints. He departs from standard hand sewing methods in several respects; always in the direction of practicality, minimizing costs and maximizing production. This is not a guide to making fine press books; there is no information included on purchasing and working with decorative papers, sewing headbands, fine press layout and format, inclusion of silk markers, decorative typefaces, etc. Instead, it is a hands-on guide describing how to put books together with the simplest methods and tools. Almost anyone would already have in their home most of the tools and supplies his method requires.. Of most interest to me were the first five chapters, wherein Barrett discusses physically building the book. Subsequent chapters include information on copyrighting, publicity, pricing, etc. The author is personable; throughout he shares his bookmaking philosophies, which sometimes carry over into philosophies of life. For that reason--the chance you have to hear from a craftsman in his own words--I recommend the later chapters, though if one is serious about marketing and publicity, one should go to John Kremer's "1001 Ways to Market Your Books" and "Book Publishing Resource Guide"; or the old standby, "The Self-Publisher's Manual" by self-publishing guru Dan Poynter. "How to Make a Book" belongs on the shelf with Merritt Clifton's "The Samisdat Method" as an invaluable resource to small publishers and would provide a wonderful compliment to existing how-to books such as Poynter's "Publishing Short-Run Books," A.W. Lewis' "Basic Bookbinding" or Pauline Johnson's "Creative Bookbinding." Highly recommended. -- C. Darren Butler -- Writer's Keeper--PYX Pres

Must Read Book!!
Being a health care executive, I feel I am fairly qualified to write a review on health care books. This book was very impressive, and I especially liked hearing what other executives of health care companies think about the future of the industry. I have read too many business books by unknown authors-this was finally one with some insight from people in industry. I highly recommend this book to any one interested in health care or in the health care industry.

THE BOOK on Wireless
We have been trying to decide on some of the best wireless initiatives for our company for quite some time. This book was incredibly useful in understanding where some of the industry leaders see the future going. I especially liked the chapter written by the CEO of AT&T Wireless. This book is a must have for anyone interest in wireless opportunities or in the wireless industry.

John Paul II's Book of Mary
I find this book to be very inspirational and insightful to John Paul II's, one of the holiest men alive, knowledge and understanding of our Blessed Mother in the Catholic Church today. The author has taken 17 different titles of Mary and taken many different speaches, writings, etc and put them together to show JPII's desire for us to know who Mary is and what she does for us. I really took a great deal from this book as I not only use it as a prayer meditational, but also as a refernce helping me to grow in my devotion to Mary.

Inspiration for living
Pope John Paul II has beatified some 1,786 Saints during his pontificate, and will canonize another 150 in the Jubilee year. The number alone exceeds the number canonized by any other Pope in history, leading some to describe his pontificate as a "Saint factory." This book provides an exhaustive glimpse into that factory with the hagiographies of more than 300 canonized Saints and 700 beatified Saints. The book includes such inspiring biographies as Blessed Gianna Beretta Molla, the Italian wife, mother and doctor who unselfishly gave her life for her unborn child; the handsome, young, mountain climber Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati; and Mexican martyr Father Miguel Pro.

Having just completed one of the bloodiest centuries the world has ever seen, Pope John Paul II is trying to tell us something. These stories are examples of his vision for the Church. They provide inspiration that he knows we will need as we face the century ahead of us. Furthermore, the stories prove that anyone can become a Saint -our friends, neighbors, co-workers, children, and maybe even ourselves.

The real Revere
This picture book is an excellent resource for children of any grade level. The book gives an excellent portrayal of Paul Revere through the years. It really focuses on him as a person and the contributions he made to his family and to his country. The pictures are an excellent resource for ELD students as well as all students. I found this book to be very accurate, yet simplistic.

Holy Father, Batman! A Comic Book about the Pope
This is a wonderful way to introduce your children to Pope John Paul II.

Richly illustrated by award-winning Italian comic book artists, the book tells the story of Pope John Paul through a grandfather and his grandchildren.

It includes Karol Wojtyla's childhood and early losses, years in the undergound seminary, skiing escapades, election as Pope, assassination attempt, and many other highlights.

The book also includes a wonderful timeline, list of papal trips, and photographs from the Holy Father's life at the end of the book.

Our own six-year-old son enjoys the book and asks to have it read to him often before bed time. I would recommend it to children ages 6 to 15.

An original format for a great textbook
Klippel's "Rheumatology" came as a surprise in its first edition. Now, the second edition probably reinforces its position as the number one textbook of Rheumatology on the market. Not only is it written in an easy, down-to-earth manner (without losing its scientifical objectivity), but it balances depth and focus on every single topic it approaches in a masterful way. To the medical student it provides the basics in a comprehensive approach, while providing all of the juicy tidbits of information, along with the clinical evidence that the resident and the practicing rhumatologist needs. It also constitutes an excellent source of practical illustrations, diagrams and clinical photography. The clinical cases of each section allow for a perfect correlation between the theory and the clinical, everyday challenges. All in all, a great book, the one to beat if there is to be a new, definite textbook in this field.

...recommend it to anyone
"Sea Stories - Book II - Seagods and Sundogs," follows John Paul Barrett's first book, "Sea Stories - Of Dolphins and Dead Sailors." Be ready for uncontrollable chuckles but have a box of tissue handy. "Seagods and Sundogs" combines humor and sadness in an entertaining compilation of stories, anecdotes, and poems. Each chapter stands on its own. One tells of unexplained disappearances of sailors at sea and another of sightings of unidentified flying objects. We learn of the phenomenon of a sundog--the reflection of the sun off a cloudbank, which is sometimes difficult to tell from the real sun. We laugh at the saga of "The Deckhand from Hell" who was unable to do anything right. I thoroughly enjoyed reading "Seagods and Sundogs" and recommend it to anyone. -- Pat Swearingen -- Oregon Coast Magazin
