Fascinating portrait of an African-Brazilian woman writer
This is a marvelous study not only of a poignant African-Brazilian woman persecuted for daring to state her beliefs, but one that reveals the different ways that American (Levine) and Brazilian (Meihy) scholars perceive the problems of race in society. A must read for anyone interested in Latin American society or the history of women or of blacks in the hemisphere.

Reveals a lot of Obscure gems from unsung heroes
For Black History fans, this is a great book in that it reveals a lot of unknown great speeches from forgotten heroes and heroines in the African-American struggle. Here, you'll meeet the likes of William Crogman, Henry McNeil Turner, Joseph C. Price, and Maria W. Stewart who boldly spoke up for African-Americans during the days of slavery and its aftermath. Also, this book contains some lesser-known speeches from the better-known Black heroes of the day like Sojourner Truth, Frederick Douglass, Booker T. Washington, and Richard Allen (the latter's eulogy on George Washington will surprise the PC crowd). But in either case, Black History fans will have a field day with this book and I would strongly recommend this for teachers to use with their students.

A balanced, well-researched account of the war
This is one of those rare books which attempts not only to explain the causes underlying a conflict, but also explores the psychology and culture of the participants. This book is well illustrated and easy to read. A good introduction to the topic, to be followed by Morrison's Washing of the Spears and all of Ian Knight's books.

An introduction to the life and rhetoric of Malcolm X
"Malcolm X and Black Pride" by Robert Cwiklik might be a juvenile biography but it deals adult issues and language, which is a way of informing you that this book quotes the derogatory language to which blacks have been subjected. This is an excellent bigoraphy of Malcolm X, dealing with not only the major events in his life but the issues that defined his public rhetoric. Cwiklik presents Malcom X as a leader of the Nation of Islam, who taught blacks to take pride in their race. This book takes pains to explain both Malcolm X's break with Elijah Muhammad and his fundamental disagreement with Martin Luther King, Jr. There are also pages devoted to explaining Marcus Garvey's dream of the "new Negro" and the religion of Islam as distinct from the Black Muslims of the Nation of Islam. The book includes photographs from throughout Malcolm X's life as well as some of the artwork honoring him on the walls fo teh Audubon Ballroom where he was killed. This book, part of the Gateway Civil Rights series, will give young readers an excellent introduction to the life and rhetoric of Malcolm X. If you have not read his most famous speech, "The Ballot or the Bullet," then that would be something to look at after reading this book.

The Best Book On Nephrology
I am an internist. During my residency years, I diecovered this book. It made me a distinguished resident in nephrology in a remarkably short time. Nephrology is the most complicated branch of internal medicine but this book has made it unbelievebly easy, meaningful and attractive. It is specialy written for those who want to learn complex issues as soon as possible.

THE MAYOR IS BLACK IS THE UNCLE TOM'S CABIN OF 20CENTURY
Author Robert W.Blakely's The mayor Is black is agripping novel that puts a spotlight on how some political and legal leaders unite with the media to shatter the dignity and slow down progress of the African-American community.Mr. Blakely exposest the abuse that can occur when African-American politician and so call leaders "sit at the table with the power structure and eat like gluttons" taking advantage of their communities" trust by lying and filling their owngreedy pockets. Prophetic Visionary
This work is a testiment to Chester Himes' brilliant insight and characterstic of the schitzophrenic relationship most extremely talented black artists have had with America. Much praised for his urban crime series, his more politically charged work was often ignored. This book and the truths it reveals about America's ability and inclination to create entire groups of people with nothing to lose speaks volumes about today's society as it did when written by the author. Many who read this will be afraid, as well they should. You will be entertained none-the-less, and hopefully inspired to think. The ending leaves something to be desired, I suspect that is because Mr. Himes was not alive to complete it himself.

An in-depth set of articles on the economic boom
Under the expert editorial guidance of Robert Cherrry and William Rodgers, Prosperity for All? provides an in-depth set of articles on the economic boom and Afro-American experiences. While employment among blacks has risen to an all-time high, the book questions whether one type of disadvantage has been replaced by another, and examines what types of jobs are offered to Afro-Americans, and by whom. Excellent survey of the realities of the new prosperity for the underclass.
