African Americans in the Chicago World's Fair of 1893
Christopher Reed has made another wonderful contribution to the historical scholarship. The current book is a very well-researched, compellingly argued refutation of the claim made by some contemporaries of the World's Columbian Exhibition of 1893 that African American participation in the event was very limited. Reed has shown that many blacks--both well-known and anonymous--attended the world's fair in various capacities. The photographs reinforce this point also. Reed further contends that the very high stature of Ida B. Wells, Frederick Douglass, Ferdinand Barnett, and I. Garland Penn, the authors of an 1893 booklet called The Reason Why the Colored American Is Not Present in the World's Columbian Exposition, and the attention which the work drew from historians has led many to erroneously believe that there was virtually no black participation in the aforementioned event.

visionary
Edmondson was one of the few artists ever to be led into his work by pure inner vision and his work shows the extraordinary power of genuine and uninfected inspiration so rare to us these days. A wonderful gift for anyone interested in the power of stone.

Colorful, blazing action, top-notch Howard, ignore the rest
The volume Black Colossus is part of the deluxe Conan series published by Donald m. Grant. It is a triumph of the bookmaker's art - beautifully made, sumptuous, with illustrations by Ned Dameron. The book contains two Conan tales, the title story and "Shadows in the Moonlight." Howard wrote these yarns in his mid-twenties (he would commit suicide at the age of 30) and they were first published in the legendary pulp magazine "Weird Tales" in 1933-34. These are excellent, typical Conan stories: colorful, blazing action, top-notch Howard, ignore the unholy legion of pallid imitators and rip-off artists that haunt us to this day. In Black Colossus, Conan is a captain of mercenary spearmen who fights to save the kingdom of Khoraja (and the lovely princess Yasmela) from the black magic of Natohk, the vieled one. As one character notes, "A short life and a merry one, say I, and with Conan the Throat-slitter in command, life is likely to be both merry and short." These are not my favorite Conan stories (see "People of the Black Circle"), but they are worthy nuggets from the Motherlode, the astonishing amount of good writing REH did in his few short years of productive life.

Great story that portrays everything about the SS
This book is a great portrail of the hierarchy of the Nazi's dreaded SS. The author goes far beyond the concentration camp guards and explains the feeble begining as a SA battalion into one of the greatest fighting and guard units inside of Hitler's Geermany. This book shows how Himmler came into the the lime life of Germany and how his forces were what helped keep Hitler in power. The author does not portray the SS as a evil force but, instead he shows that these men were men and not monsters that were only doing what they were told to do by both Hitler and Himmler. As the SS grew out of the SA, and later totally replaced the SA, it came to control the police and a large piece of the German Wehrmacht. Thus giving Himmler unbelievable powers to do what he felt was for the good of Nazi controlled Germany. If you are looking for a book filled with pictures you will not enjoy this book because it is mostly a fact filled book that explains everything about the extremely complicated Nazi SS.

The History of the Family
I had to read this book for my African American Experience Class, it was a throughly awesome revelation of the effects of slavery has had on Black people. Not to say the effects it takes on the many generations now and to come, if one is not aware of how to break the cycle.
