Great beginning to read book!
I'm a Pre-K teacher and this series is by the far the best I have seen helping children to begin to learn to read. There is one word per page that all end with "en" for the children to sound out. When you flip the page there is a new letter in front of the "en". There is a sentence or two using that word in it on the page for a grown up to read. It is a delightful book as is the entire rhyming series. Just ask my preschool class!

Lectionary for Worship (Ritual Edition)
This edition of the Revised Common Lectionary in the New Revised Standard Version is helpfully arranged for public proclamation and worship. The First, Second and Gospel Readings are conveniently grouped together, along with the Psalm citation for each Sunday, as well as for lesser festivals. The hard cover with gold cross are a welcome addition for liturgical worship as well as for more informal occasions.

Famous Artists: Matisse
As a parent and volunteer educator, this book and the others in this series provide excellent age appropriate material and interesting facts about the most important artists. The book offers great visuals, with many ideas for looking at art with youngsters. Even the exercises are easy and successful. The format is busy, but eyecatching and informative. I am ordering the whole series!

A superb exploration of the art of Joan Miro
This Famous Artist book by Nicholas Ross serves as an introduction to the life and work of Joan Miro, who was much more than a Spanish Surrealist artist. Miro used painting, sculpture, textiles, pottery, theater and enormous public monuments to express his ideas. Unlike other artists, such as Monet and O'Keefe, Miro has not been the subject of a lot of juvenile art books. But Ross does a marvelous job of showing the growth and evolution of Miro as an artist. If you were to flip through this book, you would not think these were all the work of the same artist, which is one of the reasons this is so fascinatiing. Young readers will learn the value of experimenting and understand that there is no "right" way of painting or doing any other type of art. I read this book because I have been doing my own little art appreciation course, and Miro is the one artist who sticks out as a new discovery for me. His most famous painting, "Harlequin's Carnival" (1924-25), which is shown on the cover, gives you but a taste of Miro's conception of art.

These books are organized in a particular way for each two-page spread: On the left page there is an illustration of the artist's home or environment and the story of the artist's life, along with a painting and a small symbol used to indicate the size of the paintings relative to a person. On the right page there are more paintings (usually with a key section enlarged) with text about the artist's work at the time, along with a feature on the artist's technique (e.g., feel and draw, paint in color alone, drawing by chance) with practical projects to try. This is a first-rate exploration of an artist, both for this particular series and in general.

Mogens and Other Stories

Exquisite prose for gourmet readers
I can see why Jacobsen was Rilke's favorite author. These stories are lapidary prose of the highest order -- each word was carefully chosen to produce the precise effect the author wanted, and it works. Travel with Jacobsen to the fogbound Danish coast of Jutland, the imposing Papal city of Avignon, or, in one of the masterpieces of the short story form, the medieval Italian city of Bergamo. The title novella, "Mogens," is the perfect warmup before diving into Jacobsen's amazing Bildungsroman, Niels Lyhne. Enjoy bathing your mind in the words of a master.

An solid intermediate look at the life and art of Picasso
This Famous Artist book by Antony Mason serves as an introduction to the life and work of Pablo Picasso. These books are organized in a particular way for each two-page spread: On the left page there is an illustration of the artist's home or environment and the story of the artist's life, along with a painting and a small symbol used to indicate the size of the paintings relative to a person. On the right page there are more paintings (usually with a key section enlarged) with text about the artist's work at the time, along with a feature on the artist's technique (e.g., balancing colors, seeing all angles, reworking great art) with practical projects to try.

This book balances Picasso's life with his art, organized chronologically by the key stages of his career: Paris, The Blue Period, The Rose Period, Cubism, Synthetic Cubism, etc. Some of the key paintings studied are "The Absinthe Drinker," "Les Demoiselles d'Avignon," "Minotaur and Dead Mare Outside a Cave," and "Guernica." Mason not only highlights key aspects of these paintings (and other art forms as well), he fills his book with fascinating details, like the German officer who saw "Guernica" in Picasso's studio and asked "Did you do this?" only to be told by the artist, "No, you did this." These are the sorts of things that are well worth being remembered by students. There are certainly more detailed books about Picasso's life and art, but this is an excellent intermediary book. Other titles in the Famous Artists series look at Cezanne, Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Monet and Van Gogh.

Reverend Jen's Really Cool Neighborhood/Les Misrahi
Published in Paperback by Printed Matter, Inc. (01 April, 2003)
Author: Reverend Jen
Amazon base price: $14.95
Used price: $7.50
Average review score:

Astounding!
Reverend Jen's account of her neighborhood "fun" is both educational and entertaining, not to mention, a staggering work of genius that knocks the pretentious off their high horse with its honest aesthetic of the uncool. The political puppet show combines silly humor and scathing political satire as well as pop culture references and more laughs than a barrel full of crazed monkeys. I love Reverend Jen. Although I am not Reverend Jen. I love her. Despite the fact that Reverend Jen will probably never be recognized by the established literary / art world of her time, years from now, Reverend Jen will be recognized as an artist whose vision inspired a whole new legion of art stars.
