Proper Theology = Proper Living
There is quite the movement in today's evangelical circles to the idea of "practical theology." Living what you believe, or 'walking the walk, if you will. What this movement sorely misses however is that to "live what you believe," you must KNOW WHAT YOU BELIEVE! Ryle deftly walks the line between Systematic and Practical theologies, constantly forcing the reader to stop and examine his/her own life. What is the point of theology if it doesn't impact your walk? Ryle challenges the "talk" and the "walk" at the same time. Not recommended for those who do not wish to engage in "Self-Examination," but highly recommended for those who truly wish to make Truth the reflection in the mirror of their lives.

One of the greatest Christian writers of the 20th century
Of all the books I have read in the past few years, no one has influenced my life as Bishop J.C. Ryle has. His writtings give the perfect balance of Law and grace and will help you to better understand the Christian life to a deeper and richer level. I am very thankful for the writings of this man. I would recommend his other works including "Old Paths." His expository commentaries on the Gospels are wonderful, too. Find out why J.C. Ryle has impacted Christians for over 100 years.

Enriching
Each prayer is wonderfully written and Paul Chilcote captures the essence of Wesley's teaching. Praying is not easy for me, and it has been a delight to incorporate the reading of a single prayer from this book both when I first awake and last thing before I sleep. Paul Chilicote manages to write as though his very words are my own thoughts and struggles and brings me to an attitude of reflection and thoughtfullness as I prepare to offer my personal prayers to our Lord. I expect this book will be read many times over.

Prayers in the Language of Today's Heart
In the 18th century John Wesley took church to the people. He preached at British coal fields as well as in urban centers. 53 of his sermons became known as the Standard Sermons and were used as teaching tools.

Paul Chilcote distilled the 18th century language of Wesley's sermons (which might take an hour or more if read aloud) into 53 lyrical prayers. Very accessible. Very real. Very much in tune with the language of today's heart. These are prayers to pray daily and weekly, prayers to let grow from the lips and travel to the mind and the heart, prayers to become a part of the soul. Chilcote's work updates Wesley and continues to speak to Wesley's concern for the spiritual formation of all people.

Smarra & Trilby (Dedalus European Classics)
Published in Paperback by Dedalus Ltd (February, 1994)
Authors: Charles Nodier, Judith Landry, and John Clute
Amazon base price: $11.95

A Father of European Dream Literature
Nodier, entymologist, etymologist, folklorist, political survivor (through the French Revolution,Napoleonic Empire ,Restoration, and July Monarchy) storyteller, and Romantic, was an early author to immerse his writing in the concerns of dream life and desire, and, more incredibly, to reflect the structure and deep meaning of dreams into the structure and form of his own writing. SMARRA, especially, is an incredible and profound work of layered narrative and symbolic evocation. It is also a spooky and entertaining nightmare of a vampire story. TRILBY,the magical story of a Scottish Highland sprite, is not far behind.

Nodier is a crucial influence for Nerval, Gautier, and their later heirs in the Symbolist and Surrealist movements. As a minor Napoleonic bureaucrat in the Balkans, Nodier encouraged the collection of Slav and Serbo-Croat folklore and helped to promote the conception of a national literature in this area. Using these Balkan tales, Nodier was an early importer of the vampire legend into West European literature and consciousness.

Extremely Strong!
Ryle's work is timeless. You will chuckle at some of the exhortations to stay away from books and newspapers that will lead to sin. If only Ryle could see us now, with cable tv and the internet.

Ryle's advice is biblical and practical. It is wise. It will help any young man who takes it seriously to live a more obedient, full life.

A Profound Exhortation
This is an excellent book for adolescent and teen boys to read. It encourages them to choose the high path of integrity rather than to yield to the many temptations to stray from that path. The author's style is one of a passionate appeal based on solid logic and the truth of the Scriptures.

A biblical framework for engaging culture.
"The more I read the Bible as a secular book, the more holy it becomes." (John Peck.) So begins this masterful work by Peck and Strohmer. In a world reeling from various "isms" (modernism, post-moderism, Marxism, socialism), Uncommon Sense lays the framework for biblical response to the culture and the world. Instead of running in fear from the corruptive influences of culture, this books provides a comprehensive, practical guide for genuine, faithful engagement. This book is for anyone involved in the arts, politics, education, ministry, business; ultimately this book is for thinking person.

Highly engaging and deeply erudite book on Wisdom
This collaborative venture is a call to usher the Bible out of the Church and into the marketplace. Arguing that Christians require a knowledge of our contemporary struggle before they can faithfully engage the "radical questions" that beset us, Peck and Strohmer challenge us to rediscover the framework of thought which underlies the Gospel as new paridigm for meeting these questions.

This is an important, provocative and highly readable book which carefuly balances content and complexity with a connection to and signifigance for, a wide audience.

Excellent Book. Well written and easily understood.
If you are looking for a well written easily understood C++ book, this is it. I've been in the MIS business for 15 years and am currently attending Penn State. Within weeks the reader can master the most challenging C++ algorithms. I refer to this book as the C++ bible. Definately worth the investment!

BEST BOOK IN UNIVERE FOR C++

The author of this book professor Hennefeld are the best teacher and the writer in the entire world that is why I am taking him for the third semester in a row for my computer and info science major. The book is so clear that anyone who has no background in C++ can master this language and yet the best c++ reference book for any professional.

WESTWARD GO! Fremont, Randy, and Kit Carson Open Wide the Oregon Trail

Fun, informative reading for fans of the Old West.
Westward Go! presents the exciting story of how John C. Fremont, Kit Carson, and twelve-year old Rand Benton explored the American west in the Fremont expedition's 1842 Map-Making sojourn from St. Louis, Missouri to the South Pass of the Rocky Mountains. This lively, energetic text is enhanced with line-drawings and marginal notes as the expedition encountered Native Americans, buffalo herds, Sacajawea's son, mountainmen, rivers, and the vast unexplored horizon. Westward Go! is fun, informative reading for anyone with an interest in the Old West generally, and the John C. Fremont expedition in particular.

Entertaining History
It's always a pleasure to discover the occasional historical novel that both educates AND entertains. This is not the tedious textbook presentation of America's past that I remember (and so painfully endured) over the years in required American history courses. Ms. Loftin's book is engrossing, with dialogue as dazzling as its illustrations. More significantly, she proves something I've always believed but rarely experienced--namely, that we can learn about America's remarkable past without being bored into a stupor.

You Must Change Your Life: Poetry, Philosophy, and the Birth of Sense (American and European Philosophy)
Published in Hardcover by Pennsylvania State Univ Pr (Txt) (December, 2002)
Author: John T. Lysaker
Amazon base price: $45.00
Used price: $31.14
Average review score:

happy reader
This book is a careful examination of a longstanding area in philosophy that nonetheless has tended to be consigned to the margins: the relationship between philosophy and art. This is so partly because, traditionally, each are seen as challenging the other, and at times, even demanding to threaten one another's very defining substance (or at least, status). Yet John Lysaker shows how they can enrich one another. If one allows oneself to be taken up by the text, addressed by it, Lysaker shows how philosophy can be used to illuminate just how it is that certain works of art lay claim to our lives and, if we're open to it, significantly change our lives as well.

great!
Lysaker leads readers through a philosophical exploration into the workings of poetry in a way that, through the birth of sense, challenges the very borders of philosophical thought. Subtle and powerful.
