Cultural Studies (Cultural Studies Journal)
Published in Paperback by Taylor & Francis Books Ltd (28 March, 1991)
Authors: Lawrence Grossberg, John Frow, Graham Turner, and Janice Radway

Average review score:

Compelling collection of cultural studies essays
Grossberg, Nelson, and Treichler have compiled a compelling collection of cultural studies essays. The selections in the book examine cultural studies from multiple angles, demonstrating the difficulty in identifying one encompassing definition of cultural studies. The differences do not create dissonance, however; rather they create a thought provoking collection that is worth reading.

Interesting historical panorama
I enjoyed this book a great deal because of the historical focus on a time of our history of unbridled prudishnes. Some of this is very funny. My family had in its possesion records from a mental hospital from around the turn of the century and more than half of the patients were admitted for consequences of masturbation! The rest of the book is interesting although like many sexological texts, somewhat dry. I mean, if you are going to write about sex, let's at least get a little juicy.

"Computer definitions that get you marks"
This, folks, is the reference book for my A Level Students.

A Level is the main exam route taking in the UK for entry into Universities.

The continual rapid development of computer technology means it is a nightmare trying to keep up with terminology and acronymns. This glossary has the defintions the examiners will accept. Very useful when different text books all have their own definitons.

The 4star rating rather than 5 is a reflection of the date of issue of this glossary. There must be another one on its way soon, we sure need it.

Stimulating reading for new exporters.
A very interesting collection of papers, articles and case studies on international marketing and how it affects a domestic business organization. We have recommended it to our clients and they have responded favorably. The word "stimulating" was used most often to describe the content. The most common negative comments, although few, were about the types of companies discussed. They wished that there were more examples of how small companies became successful exporters.

An Introductory basis for Calculus
This book will build a good base for calculus. The only problem with the book is that there are not enough examples nor enough variability in the exercises. Sometimes you would have to use another precalculus book as reference. In overall it has great subjects in logistic and mathematical theorems with their proofs, and you would learn how to build those proofs.

If you are a fanatic...
If you are a Python fanatic, then you will love this book. There are two drafts of the film included, as well as a variety of pictures and lots and lots of Terry Gilliams eccentric sketches.

There is no history of the film given here though, and there are no personla recollections from any of the members. Just the two scripts, a financial summary, and the pictures and graphics. If you are interested in the history of the film, you will have to find other books on Python, or the Grail dvd.

If you've seen the movie....
The format is a mass-market paperback, but this isn't a novelization but rather the screenplay as the movie was made. You'll notice that last has a subtle distinction. Oftentimes screenplays differ notably from the movies as you see them--scenes are cut because they didn't work, cost too much to do, or just because of the limits of time. The screenplays of Brazil and Monty Python and the Holy Grail are full of wonderful little tidbits that didn't make it to the screen. Unfortunately, for Life of Brian, there's only the parts that did get made, which are funny indeed, but you've already seen them.

I loved this book. I thought the photos were very beautiful and touching. However, it was Bulfinch Press who published it, not New York Graphic Society.

Some similarities to some of Chesterton's other stories
Flambeau, Father Brown's great friend and sometime sidekick, appears in only one of the stories herein.

"The Scandal of Father Brown" - A beautiful (and married) rich woman has taken up with a distinguished poet - and Father Brown, rather than reacting as expected, appears to be providing active assistance.

"The Quick One" - Old John Raggley is a law unto himself - spending his life writing to newspapers in protest, drinking only cherry brandy because of the poor quality of all other drinks sold - but he died of poisoned brandy, all the same. Early in the story, Raggley insults a Moslem's religion to his face, when the man's teetotaler companion makes a nuisance of himself - and is overjoyed when the stranger takes him seriously, and throws a dagger at him. This closeness between enemies, when they respect each other for having principles even though they're opposites, is fleshed out more fully in Chesterton's novel _The Ball and the Cross_.

"The Blast of the Book" - Professor Openshaw, who devotes his time to investigating psychic phenomena, and thoroughly enjoys exposing fraudsters, is confronted with a singular incident resulting in the disappearance of his own clerk.

"The Green Man" - The Admiral, tricked out in his most elaborate formal uniform, is found drowned in a pond near his home.

"The Pursuit of Mr. Blue" - A private detective fails to prevent the murder of a millionaire, who's been pursued to a seaside resort. A police inspector recommends that he visit the renowned amateur, Father Brown, who sifts some interesting information from the detective's story of the pursuit. A racist epithet, thrown in casually while setting the opening scene, mars the story; the actual dismantling of the puzzle is handled cleverly.

"The Crime of the Communist" - Two philanthropists, invited to dinner at the university since they're about to endow a new chair of Applied Economics, are found poisoned in the garden after dinner - and the chief suspect is the chair of Political Economy.

"The Point of a Pin" - Father Brown, currently being awakened every morning by the start of work on a nearby construction site, is interested professionally because of a labour dispute brewing therein.

"The Insoluble Problem" - A case wherein Flambeau, in his respectable retirement from his first profession, is in pursuit of a team of jewel thieves, and brings in his old friend Father Brown.
