this book was a revolution
I have first seen the movie, which was almost a revolution in the Soviet Union. Finally somebody was talking about the prostitution!!!!!!!! And before, how one prominent woman said, "there was no sex in the Soviet Union". It is a great, but a sad story about a girl, who was trying to survive and to have a bit more from life than an average person in the USSR.

Excellent book
This short book is a good place to start learning about the theory of Reidemeister torsions. Masterfully written by one of the leading experts on the subject, it follows the standard of exposition set by Milnor in his famous survey on this subject 40 years ago. The book is very easy to read, the necessary background is covered economically, but in details. You can find here many results that received the first treatment in book form and some classical results with illuminating explainations. The last chapter briefly indicates recent developments in connection with Seiberg-Witten invariants of 3-manifolds.
The book is mainly an introduction and concerns mostly with combinatorial manifolds and knot theory. As the author stated, many other aspects of the theory (e.g. the analytical theory) are left out.

Brilliant, understandable introduction to quantum mechanics.
When I was a graduate student in science many years ago, some of my fellow students referred to Rojansky's Introductory Quantum Mechanics as "Quantum Mechanics for Idiots" because it was understandable. Yes, Rojansky's brilliantly-written introduction to quantum mechanics is understandable, but it is also very detailed and highly rigorous. No other textbook on this subject presents the fundamental principles of quantum mechanics so clearly and definitively. If you have an interest in understanding the basic principles of the strange field of science known as quantum mechanics, try to acquire a copy of this excellent book. This is one of the half dozen or so greatest scientific texts that I have encountered in my more than fifty years as a student and practicing research scientist.

Little vampire learns a lesson or two
Vladimir wants what he wants when he wants it. Even if it means being alone and pushing away his family. Through a few lessons he learns that all he desires will come in it's own time. This classic theme with a Halloween edge to it, makes a substantial bed time reading choice.

One of the best!
This is an excellent text if you are interested in having your reality turned on its head. I have used this reference in almost every paper I have written since beginning my path down the winding road of critical theory. I recommend it to anyone who thinks about why we think the way we do, anyone interested in hegemony, and anyone who thinks something is wrong with our world but s/he feels s/he just can't put a finger on what it is. This is a foundational text for anyone studying literary theory or philosophy. It contains the famous I.S.A. essay, a must read for anyone who functions metacognitively!

How Lenin became a "god"
This is a very good book about how Lenin was made into a god to Russia. There is a lot of detail about Lenin's life, but more about what happened to Lenin after he died. It was not to surprising his body was preserved and put on display. In this way he was treated as the Orthodox Church has always revered its saints by keeping relics and body parts. Lenin's wife was angry that Lenin was not properly buried, but Stalin's idea was to make him into a saint. For all the years following Lenin was practically worshipped. This book shows how the cult was created by the Communist Party and forced on Russian citizens. The book treats Russians and Lenin with respect, and it has very good history.

It is hard to imagine a better presentation of these topics. My only complaint is his use of greek and latin without translating. While his use is usually inferrable from the context, if you are unfamiliar with theological jargon, you'll want a greek-latin-english dictionary at hand (maybe not, though). PLEASE don't let that scare you. It is a minimal amont of times that you'll not get what he means. Besides, isn't time to learn a little greek? Although Lossky's works are always worthwhile, his "Mystical Theology of the Eastern Church" takes the cake. He's done his homework, now do yours!
