Great, great material
I really loved the practical side to this book. The T'ai Chi forms are particularly beautiful and the supplementary exercises made my legs MUCH stronger. Incredible that something so simple could work as well as it did! It's only downside is a lack of explanation beyond the individual moves. If you are looking for an historical reference, this isn't it. If you want to learn T'ai Chi, this is the one. I recommend this for beginners as well as instructors.

The China Miracle: Development Strategy and Economic Reform (Friedman Lecture Fund Monograph)

Highly Recommended Textbook for China's Economic Development
"The China Miracle" provides an extensive study of the China's economic development since the establishment of People's Republic of China in 1949. Since the economic reform began in the late 1970s, China's economy grew rapid, with an average annual GNP growth rate of 10% for the past two decades. The China's experience contrasts greatly with the vast difficulties faced by the transition in the form Soviet Union, and Central and Eastern European countries. The success of China's reform thus has attracted worldwide attention.

The authors attempts to answer four questions that are often raised: 1) Why did Chinese economy grow slowly before the reform in 1979 but then grow rapidly afterwards? 2) Why did cyclical fluctuations - the "vigor/chaos" cycles - become part of China's reform process? 3) Can China continue the trend of reform and development and maintain a sustained, rapid growth in the future? 4) What are the general implications of China's experience for other developing and transition economies?

The book remains optimistic about the future success of China's economic reform. Yet, it also points out several problems with the economic reforms that are needed to be dealt with, such as the difficulties in the reform of State-owned enterprises (SOEs), the increasing unevenness in regional development and income distribution, etc. For more discussions on the SOE reform, the book "Stated-owned Enterprise Reform in China" written by the same authors provides a comprehensive study on this issue.

Overall, this book is a very good textbook and reference to students and scholars who are interested in Chinese economy and its future development.

Foundations of T'Ien-T'Ai Philosophy: The Flowering of the Two Truths Theory in Chinese Buddhism
Published in Paperback by Asian Humanities Press (December, 1995)
Authors: Paul L. Swanson, David Chappel, and James A. Heisig
Amazon base price: $40.00
Used price: $12.00
Average review score:

6th Century Chinese Buddhist thought, served in small bites.
This book will be of interest to those engaged in Chinese philosophy and Ch'an or Zen meditation practice. Swanson writes very well on an unquestionably difficult topic, presenting one particular slice (Two Truths Theory) of that great Buddhist systematizer, Chih-I.

China was a hotbed of sutras, treatises, and meditation practices in the Sixth Century. Zen practitioners will note that this was the time of the Third Patriarch, Hui-Neng. The most attractive feature of this presentation is that the reader gets some good looks at Chih-I's source material, the totality of Buddhist ideas and attitudes that prevailed in China at that time. The mechanical differences between the views of Hinayana and Mahayana on the same subjects are discussed in ways that are both convincing and thought-provoking.

You read this book with a marking pen in your hand. When you think you have "grokked" the text, you flip to the marvelous "system" charts in the back o! f the book for the summary look.

Meditators will easily recognize the sources of their methods in the many concepts presented.

a must-have classic!
I don't like giving out 5 stars but this book deserves them! NOT intended for beginners, this book is the only English source for information on the "jings" or skills involved in practicing real taiji. I really like how the author separates the translation from his commentary. This makes it easier to know who is saying what. An excellent reference, especially for those trying to understand how to perform correct tui shou.

Momentary Reflection on Movement: The Spirit of T'Ai Chi
Published in Paperback by Astrolog Pub House (September, 2001)
Author: David Michaeli

Connections, knowledge, and understanding
David Michaeli blends poetry, art, and the essence of T'ai Chi into a slim but weighty book. He moves the reader along a circular path of knowledge, sensation, movement, and understanding with gently paced words. He acknowledges that living in a modern world is often like straddling a gulf created by inner and outer tensions. Michaeli's teachings suggest that we stand in the center of all directions and energies. From this center, we can create an axis of equilibrium. It is not required to read this book from front to back. It may be enjoyed by topic or simply page by page. This is not an ordinary self-help book. It does not include written rules or recipes, but if you are open to sensations and perceptions, it may open a door of self-understanding.

Pakua
Published in Paperback by Kodansha International (December, 1990)
Author: Robert Smith
Amazon base price: $8.25
Used price: $17.95
Average review score:

A Fundamental Approach To Pakua Chang
This is an excellent fundamental book for anyone seeking to study Pakua Chang. It is a 160 page book filled with more than 400 action photographs that are easy to follow. Philosophy, history, and background information are kept at a minimum. Although some Hsing-I forms are demonstrated in the 18 exercises and 20 self defense applications, Mr Smith was careful to separate the linear (Hsing-I) forms from the circular (Pakua) forms. The Single Palm Change and the Double Palm Change of the Sun Lu Tang method are well demonstrated with second and third variations to execute the "change" more fluidly. The birds-eye view of the foot placement walking around the circle I found very helpful. The author took pains to describe how the muscles of the whole body should react when performing a Pakua movement, while walking the circle. Being the first Pakua Boxing book written in English (1967), it is a well written and profusely illustrated instructional guide to a once lesser known Chinese internal martial art.

Valuable resource for students of Mexican politics
This text makes several important contributions. First, it integrates several sources of data and introduces a major new biographical data bank on Mexican politicians from 1884 through 1992 (as well as intellectuals, entrepreneurs, military officers, and Catholic bishops), which is accessible through SPSS. Second, it develops a sound theoretical basis for the exploration of the data, modifying the general literature on political recruitment to more accurately reflect the contradictions in Mexican situation in particular and in the developing world in general. The author focuses on gatekeepers, opportunity variables, and factors that propel a recruit into the higher ranks of politics. Extensive coverage is given to the role of student politics, military experience, age, and business careers in political recruitment. Third, it includes an innovative analysis of the roles of gender, class, and family connections in the Mexican political recruitment and promotional processes; it also gives serious consideration to opposition party politics. Finally, it reflects the extensive experience of a leading scholar in this field and offers a case study of the recent Salinas administration to exemplify the theoretical points made throughout the book. The book concludes with a valuable bibliographic essay
