Another work from the master of explaining mathematics
This book is another pillar holding up the banner that proclaims the author to be 'the most ubiquitous man in the most ubiquitous of fields." He seems to have no mathematical weaknesses, attacking and explaining every topic with charm, wit, grace and thoroughness. It there is such a thing as mathematical savoir-faire, Martin Gardner possesses it.
In this work, Dr. Gardner explains fractal music, the Bell numbers and their uses, Egyptian fractions, packing circles and squares, mathematical chess problems, imaginary numbers, and tangent circles. He also discusses the career of Charles Saunders Pierce and the book Godel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid, by Douglas Hofstadter. Negative comments on minimal sculpture and psychic research methods are also included.
Informative as well as entertaining, the works of this author should be part of every liberal education.

Having Fun Learning Fractions
Fraction Jugglers is the best book we have ever seen to help kids (and adults!) learn how to use fractions. It starts from the very beginning (naming fractions) and gradually teaches everything you need to know. The illustrations are cute, the text is easy to understand, and the games are fun. We watched children laughing and excited to play as they were competing to see who would win the most cards. Meanwhile they were figuring out equivalent fractions without even realizing it. Definitely a great book. The fraction cards and fraction chart that come with the book are very helpful.

A can't miss book for fantasy fans
I have read all three in the series so far and can't wait for the fourth. The characters and world are masterfully detailed. The plot is one of the best I have ever read,it starts slow but as it develops you'll find yourself unable to put it down. This series has everything you look for in a great book. you will laugh you will cry and most definatly gasp at the betrails.Jon Snow and Tyrion Lannister are the most interesting characters to me. You'll root for Jon and won't know what to think about the imp Tyrion, and also the direwolves are a great addition. To finish, if you love fanasy as I do, I Recommend you pick up a copy

Gardner at his best, which is saying a lot!
It is most certainly not an exaggeration to say that more people have learned more mathematics at the literary knee of Martin Gardner than from anyone else. His columns in Scientific American and subsequent collections in book form have been an inspirational and educational experience for millions. When he "retired" from writing the column, he was succeeded, not replaced.
Since his departure from the duties of writing regularly for Scientific American, he has kept busy writing occasional articles for many different publications. He also stays active in following advances in mathematics and how it is taught in the American society. This book is a collection of many of the mathematical articles as well as some of his comments regarding how mathematics is currently taught.
While reading the book, I was once again placed in awe of his ability to state the mathematical experience in clear terms. One point follows from another with little or no extraneous fluff. There are many writers of technical books who adopt the style of adding in cutesy dialog that supposedly makes it easier to understand. In keeping with his personality, Gardner simply explains it and is done. It is very refreshing to read material in this form.
The topics are generally recreational in nature, although some, particularly those about artificial intelligence (AI) are philosophical. He dismisses the success of the chess playing computers as an insignificant special case. This is true, but he misses what should be the real point of Deep Blue defeating Gary Kasparov. The fact that it took such a computational monstrosity that does only one thing and years of programming to defeat Kasparov shows us how efficient the human brain is and how difficult it is to mimic human intelligence.
The remaining topics, such as magic squares, tiling, dissections and word play all sum up recent advances in the field. My favorite essay is one that details how to program magic tricks on a computer. The strategies used are very simple and show how easy it is to perform tricks that seem impossible.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book and consider it a necessary read for anyone interested in recreational mathematics. An entire generation has arisen since Gardner ceased his regular writings and I encourage all math teachers to examine his essays for material to use in their classrooms. They are the best explanations of mathematics you can find and it has already been proven that they light a fire of enthusiasm for mathematics.

Gurps Traveller Behind the Claw: The Spinward Marches Sourcebook

A must have for traveller fans
This module covers the spinward marches sector in detail. This is the region of traveller universe where most adventures were designed for along the almost 30y of the game existance. The sector has been covered twice before. First in a classic traveller module in the usual UWP (universal world profile) database without much detail. Second as an appendix of megatraveller Library data, also in a UWP database. Now SJ games covers them in detail giving a small text for each planet yet allowing many misteries for each game master to develop his own adventures. Also detailed are the major politics between the states and the corporations of the region. The versions differ from each other in world profle and even frontiers, but that is easy to be solved by the Game master. It's an excellent book lacking only a colored map in the old traveller style. This can be done by buying Megatraveller boxed set, which unfortunately is rather rare to find. Hopefully someone at SJ games will read this review and solve this...

A different view of Native-European contact
Scholarly works are not supposed to entertain but Martin's interesting ideas about the cultural confrontation between the First People and the first Europeans makes for fascinating reading. He challenges several accepted views about Native population decline resulting from disease and warfare which are sure to spark disagreement; yet his logic is difficult to refute and the perspectives he offers provide new directions for research. Martin manages to avoid casting anyone into the roles of oppressor and victim by presenting the sequence of events as the result of rational decisions by both cultural groups. While anthropologists and sociologists will certainly find "Keepers" of interest, anyone who teaches cultural diversity or provides diversity training will also benefit from this work. General readers will enjoy asking themselves if their ancestors could have been involved in the events Martin describes.

Sandy Tatum's Amateur golfing career spans every facet of the game and has involved personalities from all walks of life. His book is a fascinating collection of short essays and thoughts about his remarkable life in golf. It is funny, perceptive, and engaging. And there is a short but splendid introduction by Sandy's close friend, Tom Watson. I recommend it to anyone who has ever picked up a club or just enjoyed watching others play.
