One of the best literary magazines around
Open City consistently publishes great stories, poems, essays, and artwork. I look forward to each issue, because each one is so different, and because this magazine continues to be vital and relevant, esp. because many literary magazines are so staid and dull....

Affirmative Action chapters worth the price of book
In the shadow of the upcoming Supreme Court decision concerning affirmative action, I wanted to do some research on the issue. This books treatment is excellant. There are detailed articles about the Bakke and Hopwood cases. There's a summary of the Harvard's affirmitive action policy which was praised by the Supreme Court in the Bakke case as an excellant policy. An article opposing all civil rights laws followed by an artcile that justifies affirmative action are both thought provoking. There is also an intersting article about various ways to look at equality and fairness in treating your children in different situations.

The upcoming decision in the Michigan case may truly be a watershed opinion on affirmative action at least in university admission cases. Justice Blackmun said it best in the Bakke case: "there is no other way" than affirmative action. We cannot end racism without taking into account race.

Review from a Pocono Local
I have lived in the Poconos all my life and know many of the people interviewed in this book. Not only are the tales and legends a great read, they are highly accurate in terms of history and geography. The author(s) manage to capture the character of the interviewees without taking away from the "ghostly" content. Whether it is ghosts, or the region you are interested in, I highly recommend it.....

Power Lines : Celtic Prayers about Work
Published in Paperback by Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge (1992)

Average review score:

A truly inspiring collection.
Based on the model of the ancient Celts, David Adam's Power Lines provides contemporary prayers that convert common features of the workday into opportunities for prayer. Power Lines incudes prayers for the various times of the day, as well as for emotional responses to work. Of particular interest is the chapter devoted to those who live and work in cities. A Voice in the Night: Father Almighty, Lord of all,/Hear your loved one when I call.//Jesus all loving, Savior of all,/Hear your loved one when I call.//Spirit all Powerful, guide of all,/Hear your loved one when I call./Trinity all blessed, ruler of all,/Hear your loved one when I call.

Road to the Stilt House
Published in Hardcover by Oberon Press (April, 1985)
Author: David Adams Richards
Amazon base price: $27.95
Average review score:

Richards' best novel...
Road to the Stilt House is an excellent novel written within the naturalist tradition. The gritty novel is written in a terse, pithy poetic style that suits Richards' relentless investigation of the social and moral consequences of poverty. Richards' sense of indignation at the arm of the state is at its most palpable and effective. Though often neglected, this novel is one of the best to come out of the Maritime Provinces and must be dealt with in any comprehensive theory of Canadian Literature.

If you are involved in any way with setting up the church for Mass and if you work in the Sacirsty this manual is a God send!

There is a good history of the sacristy, excellent directions and guidance for each celebration, and it is well prepared.

Season of the Loon: One Man's Search for Wilderness in Increasingly Strange Times
Published in Paperback by North Star Press of St. Cloud, Inc. (October, 2001)
Author: David Adams
Amazon base price: $14.95
Average review score:

Season of the Loon is a GREAT READ!
I love this book. It has the right amount of humor in each chapter to balance the very deep meaniful words of the writer with regard to how he came to understand what "wilderness" really is. The chapters are great stories which will make you smile and feel. It reads beautifully, his writing is like poetry in its flow. It is not a nature freek book, it is about a boy who grows up on an island in the summers and goes from a person who races motor boats up and down the shore to a person who loses his place in the fishing world because he sees things differently. I loved it.

Warm and heart-filling!
This is a group of poems from the heart. It captures the essence of growing up in a large family in a Mexican border town. It is truely one of the best group of contempory peoms I have read. I am a bit prejudice tho, I am his sister.

Excellent data source, the best there is for violence.
The authors really have spent a lot of energy compiling the most complete collection of tables, figures, and graphs pertaining to violent crime. But the Crem de la Crim (ha ha) is the Appendix, which gives great detail concerning each data source used. This is a researchers dream come true.
