Examines racial stereotypes in commercial imagery
Ethnic Notions is a catalog of images exploring racist memorabilia from the collection of Jan Faulkner, examining racial stereotypes in commercial imagery from toys to sheet music. Over 200 items are examples of how the black image has been distorted over the years. The black and white images provide powerful testimony.

Explores American racial stereotypes in commercial imagery
Ethnic Notions: Black Images In The White Mind explores American racial stereotypes in commercial imagery, including toys, household items, postcards, sheet music, and advertisements. More than two hundred items showcased in these pages accurately depict the ways in which the black image was distorted and black people misrepresented in the broader American culture from 1847 to the present day in order to establish and reinforce the existing social discrepancies, justify discrimination, and perpetuate traditional majority/minority relationships in the county. Ethnic Notions is very highly recommended reading for Black Studies, social issues, and American cultural history reading lists and library reference collections.

A Guide to Playing the Mythos Card Game
This book contains miscellaneous information about the Mythos collectible card game. It contains: the rules of the game, a FAQ, a short play and deck construction guide, a sort of designer's notes on the game, background information on selected cards, rules for solitaire play and creating your own adventures, a complete spoiler list for the limited edition of the game and lists of card attributes and requirements for completing adventures.

As a collector and player of the game, I found the designer's notes on the history of the game and the design philosophy to be especially interesting. Also useful to me are the short notes on the background of selected cards and the rules for creating and scoring your own adventures. The pictures of the selected cards are black & white with a paragraph of background info. Buyers should also note that there is an updated version of the rules of the game at the Chaosium website.

Sublime writing...
If you've not read any of David Adams Richards' books, you're missing a wonderful experience. Richards is master of the sublime, even when covering gritty topics and plotlines. Such as it is in this title; the characters are imperfect, flawed, some of them disturbed, outcast. This story is a tangled web woven, entrapping the souls it skirts, unravelling their lives as the situation(s) gain momentum. There are truly haunting moments experienced as one absorbs the tale. Although the reader will have affinity with the characters' very human flaws, Richards never allows us to get too close and I believe he does that deliberately; this fiction takes an in-depth look at the shallowness of living on the edge and the waste that it is.

The story will pull you in gently and carry you along with ease - the writing is so good you don't notice it... you simply absorb the story and its characters.

I've been keeping my eyes open for more of this writer's works (I started with his latest "Mercy Among the Children") as he has quickly become one of my fave writers. This is an excellent starter into the rich and dense world of David Adams Richards. Enjoy.

Excellent! I am ordering a copy for all my managers!
This book is easy to understand. The way in which the author combined golf and leadership was pretty cool. I read it in an hour on the plane and used three points out of the book when I got to my meeting that afternoon. It's terrific!

Visceral prayer
David Adam's pungent, freshly minted prayers in the tradition of the Celtic saints are strong medicine for overdoses of prayers composed in the theologically abstract mode. Adams artfully and ably demonstrates the possibility of full-orbed, life-encompassing communion with God. His uncanny resonance with the visions of St. Aiden and St. Cuthbert must certainly pay tribute to the ambiance of his post on Holy Island (Lindisfarne).

It works!
This book, as with all the Princeton Review series, is funny, witty, frank, and effective. The sample questions provided in the book, as well as in the disk, are just like those on the real test. It worked a miracle on my verbal score!

Follow Chip from one adventure to another
Easy reading. The characters are well developed and the descriptions were so detailed, you'll swear you can smell the aroma of strong cajun coffee perking. The hilarious interaction between the Federal Government, The Louisiana State Government, the Cajuns and the New Orleanians. The wheeling and dealing and looking the other way. I felt like I was following "Chip" and on several occasions I was afraid he would end up as "white bones in the reeds". An armchair trip to cajun country.

One of my better tech book buys
This book is really two books in one. A VXML tutorial and an overview of all the technologies used to build voice applications. The authors, in the overview portions, have presented detailed information yet have made it manageable enough to allow the reader to gain a good hold of the material without getting lost in the detail. Where the book really stands out though is in the VXML tutorial. The tutorial is written in a layered fashion in which the basic concepts are presented before moving on to the next more advanced feature. At each step an example is used to help make the concepts concrete. I loved the fact that the authors never underestimate the my intelligence nor did they seek to impress the me with their advanced knowledge. I was very happy to find this in a recently published technical book. I was able to move quickly though the tutorial building on the example presented. I bought the book hoping to come up to speed on new voice application technologies having been out of that field for many years. The book has done that and I consider it one of my better tech book buys.

Great Book on Celtic Spirituality
David Adam writes on Celtic spirituality from a biblical point of view, inspired on the old hymn "Be Thou My Vision", based on the Celtic Christian tradition. Every chapter begins with one line or phrase from this hymn, which Adam uses to develop his main theme. For those interested in Celtic spirituality, the book deals with issues like our relationship with God's criation, spiritual wilderness, stillness, fellowship with God, faith and confidence, God's protection, God's love, His presence, etc, which are the favorite themes of this tradition. After each chapter there are suggested exercises to help the reader experience the subject of that chapter. The author's purpose is to stimulate the reader to worship God. Among these exercises there are many prayers that Adam himself has written or colected from others and "tried and tested with small groups from his own parish and on retreats". David Adam is an authority on Celtic Christianity, and has written at least seven other books on this issue. He used to work as a miner and for over twenty years he was the Vicar of Danby in North Yorkshire. For the fans of the Irish band Iona, it might be intesting to know that their album "Jorney into the Mourn" was inspired by this pleasent and deep book.
