GATEWAY: Dr. Thomas Walker & the Opening of Kentucky
This is a very well written, photographed and illustrated book that reveals many little known truths about the origins of Kentucky and the migration west through Cumberland Gap. It is a must read for all students of early Kentucky history. Virtually every other page contains either a map, illustration or beautiful photograph. The photography by world-renowned photographer, Adam Jones, is simply stunning! In truth, it is the photography of Adam Jones that first attracted me to this outstanding book. As a student of early Kentucky history, I consider this book in particular to be indispensable to understanding the truth surrounding the opening of Kentucky and all points west. This is a truly great historical work, replete with bibliograhical references, indicative of the author's extensive research. Therefore, I highly recommend it!

Hockey Dreams

Dreams Unforgotten
Richards reveals all those things which we thought nobody else had ever reflected upon. Could an American possibly enjoy this book? I'm not sure. But every Canadian who once was young, and who perhaps scooped mounds of snow, in a transe of fantasy, off a bumpy ice surface into the dark hours of once endless days, will appreciate this book like the game itself; the merciless joy of unhindered potential for our imagined years to come, and our mission to reach our potential until reality sinks in, will occupy your every shift, deek, and goal (or assist, for that matter). And this, from a 19 year old reader--just a reminder to Richards: though times have changed, they have ever remained the same (kids still play hockey, but then, maybe it isn't the same after all).

Horrendous Evils and the Goodness of God (Cornell Studies in the Philosophy of Religion)

Only for the brave!
Marilyn McCord Adams takes on some of the ugliest theologico-philosophical tangles known to man - and does so very courageously. The fundamental dilemma, Does the believer in God commit himself to a logically untenable position when he posits the existence of an all-good, all-knowing, and all-powerful deity, and yet acknowledges the presence of evil in the world? I.e. is there a possible world in which such a situation manifests itself? Of course, these issues have been debated to death by analytical philosophers (and some have concluded that believing in such a God is inconsistent with the existence of evil).

Dr. Adams moves away from the traditional formulations of this question within analytic circles, which makes use of the utilitarian pain/pleasure calculus type approach to morality (championed by philosophers such as Bentham and Mills). Instead, she offers alternative approaches by examining the works of various theologians throughout the ages. Among the approaches considered are purity/defilement (cf. Rudolph Otto, The Idea of the Holy), the honor code, and aesthetics. She examines the most horrible of horrors encountered by man, and uses them to show how her God can overcome these horrors despite their apparent intractibility. Among some of the more interesting ideas suggested are the notion that God indeed suffers along with us humans and that even Christ (as God) had to experience abandonment by God, in order to fully participate in the human condition (even though these have been originally suggested by others).

While I will not comment on the validity of her arguments (I think the difficulties are too great for me), I do think that she offers profound insight into the nature of God (whatever such an entity might be). It is nice to know that someone still has faith in an all-loving merciful deity, despite the fact that we live in a post-consumerist, post-industrial, post-Marxist, post-Auschwitz world.

Beyond the "Medieval Paradigm" into understanding
This is probably the single most impressive supplement to Ars Magica ever written. The book is handled with great knowledge, grave respect, and an intensity of scholarship that one rarely sees in gaming. I handed it to a non-gaming friend who is a Torah scholar and he was impressed; he quibbled with certain points, but overall he saw this as a book that helped clear up many basic misconceptions of Judaism, especially as practiced during the Middle Ages.

Kabbalah will give you background on the Jewish communities of the Middle Ages, their beliefs, their mores, and their habits. It will give you insight into humour, worship, mysticism, and attempting to survive as a marginalized yet recognized people. Unlike the poor pastische earlier supplements have given to the Perfecti, this supplement gives a very accurate presentation of Jewish life (and how it varies in different parts of Europe).

Pick this book up and learn. Shalom.

For Lovers Of New Jersey's Haunted History
I have almost every one of the author's other books; he's not the best writer in the world, but he's one of the few people out there writing about the ghost and shipwreck legends of the Jersey shore, so I'm thankful! In this book, he writes about pirates, various ghosts and shipwrecks, haunted old houses and inns and even war stories...all taking place in and around Long Beach, New Jersey. If you like this kind of thing and if you get a kick out of reading about New Jersey's history, you'll like this book and the author's other books. All the books have a bit of a home-made look about them, but they're still fun.
