Anthropology As Cultural Critique: An Experimental Moment in the Human Sciences

Toward Critical/Alternative Forms of Ethnography
This classic work by Marcus and Fischer is still important to an understanding of changing global and local conditions in postmodernity and how we, as ethnographers, might proceed. This text was very helpful in the researching and writing of my ethnography (now a book: Native Americans in the Carolina Borderlands: A Critical Ethnography, Carolinas Press, 2000). I needed help in conceptualizing hybrid cultural forms and found it in Marcus's and Fisher's text. I also found the text useful for helping me think through the popular cultural critique that needed to be articulated from the everyday discourses of my participants. If you are interested in critical ethnography, this is a must read. Anthropologists, Sociologists, and folks in Cultural Studies and Communications will want to have this text in their reference libraries.

The Baron's Apprenticeship
Published in Paperback by Bethany House (1986)
Authors: George MacDonald and Michael R. Phillips
Amazon base price: $8.99
Used price: $1.10
Average review score:

Excellent Book!
This was the first book by George MacDonald I've read, but this one made me want to go out and get another to read. I read this one over about two days, and I can honestly say that I had to put it down very unwillingly. I particularly love Barbara, Richard's friend, and that she's completely free from all prejudice. It seems those around her could learn a few things from her! The end was completely believable, which made it seem as though the story could have taken place. The characters were likewise very believable which lent to a very smooth plot.

Fun.
These plays are fun to read. They might seem old fashioned because they were written two hundred years ago, but actually I think they are relevant today and any day. I've read all four plays already dozens of times, and I wish more people could become acquainted with this period's marvelous literature.

Exploring the human condition.
This book is a well written exploration of the guilt we all carry around with us and how we find the strength to face it. A surprising twist to more modern ideas of how we deal with guilt. Definitely worth owning.

Damned Yankees
Published in Hardcover by Warner Books (1991)
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

A fascinating and funny read
I got this book shortly after it came out in 1991 and have enjoyed through numerous re-readings since. It covers the Yankees from the time George Steinbrenner bought the team in the early '70s to 1990, when Steinbrenner was banned "for life," by which time he had made the franchise a laughingstock. Moss Klein and Bill Madden were two of the many beat writers to cover the Yankees during that time and tell some neat stories from the inside. The book has a chapter on each manager under Steinbrenner (the Billy Martin, chapter is, of course, the most interesting), and also writes about the stars of the Yankees, as well as some of the lesser-known players who still made things interesting. Klein and Madden not only tell of some of the famous (and not-so-famous) stories of the team, but also tell some from the point of view of the writers, showing how out-of-the-ordinary it was to cover this particular team. Non-Yankee fans will probably enjoy reading how this proud franchise was reduced (however briefly) to a second-divison club, while Yankee fans can relive a lot of the interesting stories and, looking back, can breath a sigh of relief that a meddlesome owner has seen the error of his ways and has let the people he hired just do their job and bring the team newfound success.

Everyday spirituality
These books are a wonderful guide to how this life relates to the next and how God directs all life. They answer questions about why bad things happen, the purpose of life, and order in the universe, in a philosophical way that is practical and easy to understand. If you are looking for something deeper than scientific answers, I highly recommend Divine Love and Wisdom and Divine Providence!

Simply the best volume ever written on the Presidency....
Accessible, well-written, and utterly compelling history is loaded with facts and dates, but more than that, this book places each president in the context of his times. Therefore, we come to understand the era itself; with the policies, debates, and legal questions fully explored.
