Rising Above Shame: Healing Family Wounds to Self Esteem
Published in Paperback by Launch Press (01 October, 1991)
Authors: Stanley D. Wilson and John Bradshaw
Amazon base price: $12.95

Absolutely amazing!
This book has helped me more than any other book I have read related to recovery from childhood wounds. My addiction to books led me to read hundreds of books on recovery issues (especially when I was going through my own discovery phase of recovery from childhood physical, psychological, emotional and sexual wounds, including just about every book on shame ever written (I admire John Bradshaw's work as well). I highly recommend this book to all of the ladies that I sponsor in recovery and I have purchased a copy of it for my counselor who has a love of books as well. I have not seen anything like this book. Reading through the material related to each of the 12 "shaming messages" increased my awareness 10 fold and helped me to identify with the core beliefs that I held about myself for so long. God bless Dr. Wilson! Phenomenal book!

Finally! A clear understanding of SHAME.
This is an excellent book. It is not just for academics. It is for everyone. This is a book that gives insight, understanding, and strength to it's readers. Read this book. Your worth it!

A Fine Edition of a Classic
"Brief Lives" has always been a delight, but it was Oliver Lawson Dick's scholarly editing that revealed Aubrey's genius. And Lawson Dick's Introduction, "The Life and Times of John Aubrey", is a miracle of synthesis and compression: certainly one of the finest biographical essays ever written. This Nonpareil Books edition is sumptuous - a joy to read in these days cheap, quickly produced paperbacks.

This Book Really Cooks! :)
I borrowed this book from my library, as I do many cookbooks, but this one I have to own. I have been baking since I was engaged, nearly 30 years now; I bake bread three times a week, bake cakes, cookies, etc, from scratch, and own a library full of cookbooks. I now only buy those cookbooks which add something special to my collection, and this book surely does. The recipes are wonderful, and the historical and regional information is useful and interesting.

Britain Yesterday and Today: 1830 To the Present

An excellent view of Britain
I am a student majoring in History with a concentration in English History. I have used this book for one class, but since have come back to it counless times. The chapters are well focused and broken down into logical subcategories. The book is an excellent reader for those who want to know about the events and significance (something that many books leave out) of English history and contemporary England, as well as a refrence book for students and Anglophiles! The book is well written and easy to read for any reader, historical backgroud or not. Prof. Arnstein is known for his keen sense of humor and it definatly shows through in this book. This book also inclues photos which excellently illustrate the world of late Victorian England and the 20th century of the UK.

A Britten Source Book
Published in Hardcover by Oak Knoll Books (1987)
Authors: John Evans, Paul Wilson, and Philip Reed
Amazon base price: $80.00
Average review score:

The ONE Britten book you'll need.
You are fond of the music of Benjamin Britten; you also collect recordings of his music; you also collect scores, programs of Britten performances, other ephemera. You may even be asked to write or talk about the music in general, or about a specific work.

In short, you are a Britten buff. And it would be nice if there were a complete, detailed, chronological list of all his works, together with information about first performances, or other useful background notes on the composition and its performance.

You need wish no more. Here is your book, the only one you'll need. Complete, detailed, chronological, including an extensive bibliography, a list of recordings, even notes on incidental musical and occasional works. It is a thorough, no-nonsense catalog, lovingly compiled by John Evans, Philip Reed, and Paul Wilson, and published by the Pears-Britten Library in Aldeburgh, the seat of the annual Aldeburgh Festival.

It is hard to imagine a more useful book. No Britten-lover can afford to be without it.

Brother Twelve: The Incredible Story of Canada's False Prophet
Published in Paperback by McClelland & Stewart (1992)
Authors: John Oliphant and Colin Wilson
Amazon base price: $17.99
Used price: $15.88

Impressive with good BC History!
I found the book to be well written. The history of BC and furthermore Nanaimo and Canada's false prophet "Brother XII" really opened my eyes. As a person who has lived in Nanaimo for all of my 17 years I had never heard of Brother XII before. The information in this book and references to Nanaimo and the surrounding area was wonderful. To think such a spiritual scam occurred right on Nanaimo's back door was amazing! My hat real goes off to Mr. Oliphant who researched many of the people who lived in town, in Vancouver, and in many other places affected by the Brother. I will definitely read it again, and I recommend anyone interested in BC or Vancouver Island history also read this book as it is an invaluable chapter to our past!

Carriage of Goods by Sea
Published in Hardcover by Pitman Publishing (1998)
Author: John Furness Wilson
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

Great book
There are many books available on shipping law and carriage of goods by sea, but this one explains the international treaties, causes of dispute, conflict of laws, and essential shipping documents and contracts in a way that would make it an ideal text book. The writer runs a college course in the UK and clearly has had time to develop his methodology for clear explanations.

CB: a life of Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman
Published in Unknown Binding by Constable ()
Author: John Wilson
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

Fascinating biography
Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman was born in 1836 near Glasgow, entered Parliament in 1868, became Prime Minister in 1905, led the Liberal Party to its stunning victory in 1906, and died April 22, 1908, having resigned as Prime Minister on April 3 of that year and been succeeded by Asquith. After reading this book it might be wise to read Roy Jenkins' superb biography of Asquith. While I did not think this was as exciting a book as Jenkins' biography of Asquith, that is due only to the times that each was Prime Minister--Asquith's time was far more momentous. But I enjoyed this book thoroughly. One cannot but help admiring Campbell-Bannerman, even he was not a very hard worker. He customarily spent six weeks each fall at Marienbad. He was rather against the Boer War, and when he came to power he made peace with Botha and Smuts, to Lord Milner's disgust. The book has an excellent bibliography, listing books which I would like to read. When I read this book I noted from said bibliography three books to read: Arthur James Balfour, by Blanche Dugdale; 25 Years, by Viscount Grey, and Haldane, 1856-1915, by Maj. Gen. Sir Frederick Maurice. But since I have only read 25 Years. The other two remain on my to be read list.
