A must for "Osler Lovers"
I know three of the medical doctors (All members of the Osler Society) who assembled these choice selections uttered and (mostly) penned by Sir William Osler . . who seems to have felt strongly on only one controversial subject = that men seldom did any worthwhile creative work after age 40 and would do well to be "chloroformed" at age 60. Sir William died at age 70. The term "Internal Medicine" was coined in German-speaking Europe during Sir William's post-graduate training years there and he established the definition of the "specialty" at Johns Hopkins. The "specialty" has now out-lived its usefulness but our reverence for the man who contributed more than any other to the art and science of patient care obviously is being passed along to many young men and women who choose to be REAL PHYSICIANS.

Wow!
I bought this book by accident. I was in a bookstore looking for another book, but ended up walking out with Wilberforce's enduring classic. I first encountered Wilberforce when reading a biography of the American abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison. Since that time I have had the opportunity to read the life story of the English Great Emancipator himself. Wilberforce may have been small and frail in physical stature but his moral stature is that of a giant. For decades, Wilberforce, an MP in the British Parliament, labored toward two great ends: 1. To abolish the slave trade and slavery itself within Great Britain. 2. To change the decadent and decaying moral culture of his homeland. Real Christianity was written toward goal #2. On reading Real Christianity it is easy to see why it remained an English bestseller for 50 years! Wilberforce's writing is like the man himself. Compassionate, logical, persuasive, determined, humorous, and fair-minded.

A Helpful Book Full of Interprative Essays
I am a sophomore attending Marquette University, and for my British Literature Class, we had to write a 7-10 pg paper for our final research project on any work we covered in class.

I chose Othello. The purpose of the assignment was to pick a topic related to the work and find various interpretations that would help you prove your point. Scott does a very nice job of collecting various reputable authors in his discussions of each play. From what I could tell, he chose professors and esteemed writers for all the essays I read.

I also liked how he gave a brief synopsis of each play before the essays. He also makes sure that there are in-depth character sketches for each main character and descriptions of the main themes in the plays.

I picked up this book from our library and I enjoyed his collections on Othello. Therefore, since I believe it is a valuable resource, I have decided to purchase the book myself.

I recommend it highly as a source to any student.

Makes Shakespeare hum!!!
I have always loved Shakespeare but, even though I have studied it, sometimes, he is a little difficult to pin down on what exactly he is saying or meaning and it is often hard to get the feel or mood for certain scenes. After all, he was a playwright, not a journalist! And he wrote five centuries ago in the idiomatic English of that time. This critique is absolutely brilliant. Van Doren's feelings on Shakespeare are that he wrote his plays to be enacted on a mostly-bare stage in front of a noisy crowd of Joe Q. Publics, not enacted in an elaborate hushed stage setting in front of a group of phychologist, phychoanalists, etc. I have often felt that some critics see deep, mystical, dark meanings in Shakespeare that he never intended (I feel it is more a reflection of the critic's own phyche). Not to say that Shakespeare is shallow! I feel his "well-written" plays are awesome and unmatched by anyone, anywhere, anytime. Van Doren brings Shakepeare to the light of day in a clear, logical, yet so very elegant way. This book literally brings me to tears, it's so beautiful!

An excellent and easy to use tool for learning neuroanatomy.
Dr. Williams' CD is one of the most attractive, easy to use, and functional brain atlases I have seen. The quality of the images is outstanding and the concept unique. Too many CD authors are like new cooks...they over spice! The senses are bombarded with every computer bell and whistle available with the mistaken notion that this overload will keep the users interest or differentiate the CD medium from text. In contrast, Williams has used a elegant but conservative palate, a minimal but sufficient user interface, and intuitive program flow. I highly recommend this atlas to anyone trying to teach or learn the basic gross anatomy of the human brain.

The Thirteen-Book Prelude (The Cornell Wordsworth)
Published in Hardcover by Cornell Univ Pr (1992)
Authors: William Wordsworth and Mark L. Reed
Amazon base price: $325.00
Average review score:

A Fascinating Piece of Scholarship
The Prelude, divided into 14 books, was first published in 1850, a few months after Wordsworth's death. In 1926 a second version divided into 13 books was published. In this comprehensive two-volume edition in the Cornell Wordsworth series the photographs of the MSS are contained in the first volume and the transcriptions in the second. The reader is offered thousands of new substantive and accidental readings revealing with rare depth and precision WW's fascinating creative process spanning many years. A detailed history of the poem's growth from two books during 1798-1799 to 14 books during 1832-1850 is supplied by Reed in his introduction. Reed's patience and skill in editing this complex and daunting material deserves every praise. The physical aspect of the volumes is praiseworthy as well; unfortunately the MSS photographs are not always clear; but this does not in any way diminish the book's value.

A look inside Twain's writing method
The main portion of the book is "Puddnhead Wilson", but Twain writes a fascinating intro to "Those Extraordinary Twins" to explain how he started writing one book and ended up with the other. The twins were originally conjoined (Siamese), and were the main characters. The side characters of Tom and Roxy developed into main characters in an entirely different story. what you end up with is a tragedy and a comedy, that occur around the same time, in the same town, with most of the same characters. Its amazing how much a few little twists change everything.
