I really loved this book. Its a quick read with no major thinking involved. The "clickers" are these giant crab/scorpion like creatures that have come out of the sea and attack a small coastal town. If you love good old fashioned monster stories youll love this book. The way they kill people is pretty wild it'll make you squirm, and, they kill just about the whole town! I'm hoping for a sequel

CLICKERS is horor's answer to A PERFECT STORM..or at least begins that way. Then it kicks into highly anxious scenes, good amounts of gore...and a scary premise that had me wearing a thin coat of gooseflesh. Good stuff if you are into the schlockly B movies of horror...nothing serious but a bunch to take in. Good stuff.

Simply put, I couldn't put this book down! If you like horror in the vein of Jack Ketchum or Edward Lee -- or better yet -- Guy N. Smith, you will love Clickers!

This beautifully written book brings to light, in an understated but poetic way, the genius and greatness of the man who, as Gaustad says, "was out to do nothing less than alter the institutional structure of the Western world." It is a measure of our time that many people-especially young people educated pursuant to the fashionable bromides of contemporary social science education-have never heard of this first founder of liberty of conscience and disestablishment of religion in America. In our epoch of attempted "faith-based" governmental initiatives, Gaustad's book reminds us, by constant reference to the writings of Roger Williams, of those principles that, after a bitter struggle of more than a century, came to distinguish this nation from the government-controlled religion and thought of the rest of the world. The life of Roger Williams shows that deeply held religious belief necessarily implies an unwavering commitment to the principle of absolute separation of church and state. Williams' life also demonstrates that at least one colonial leader tried, unsuccessfully, to overcome the tendency of the Puritans to treat Native Americans as less than human or as mere subjects for conversion to Christianity. The tragedy of Williams' life consisted solely in the failure of his decades-long effort to resolve the conflict between rapacious, religiously hypocritical English settlers and the Native Americans. The triumph of his life was his original pronouncement, in this country, of the enduring but often threatened principle that government should be restricted to civil, not religious, tasks. More than a century later, Jefferson and Madison built on the foundation that Roger Williams so nobly established in his writings and in the constitutional documents of Rhode Island.

Gaustad did an excellent job of portraying not only Williams' beliefs, politic and theology but the state of the world that led to their development and need. Very readable, never boring, practical and insightful to William's America as it is to ours. WE could learn a great deal from Williams, even so mamy years later. Gaustad truly brought him to life.

Gaustad's Liberty of Conscience is the second biography of Roger Williams I have read this summer. Perhaps because the first, Covey's The Gentle Radical, was so prolix, I loved Gaustad's work. His selection of historical data, his clear sequencing, and his explication of Williams's own writings make this a delight to read. Seventeenth-century Britain and colonial America and all those names one vaguely remembers are vividly described. The prose is clear and attractive. I came away with a new appreciation of Williams. Gaustad sees him as the first to set forth those principles of religious liberty that were picked up after him by Locke, Penn, Jefferson, and others and which we take for granted today. Toleration is a subject of current conversation within the United States. This biography depicts someone who fought for toleration in a time when people were being banished and even executed for not believing what the political powers said they must believe. It really gives a healthy perspective on our times. I recommend it highly.

I read "According to Mark" with special interest as it is a novel about a man writing a biography-- and I am myself writing a biography. Penelope Lively raises all sorts of interesting issues such as: Can the subject change the course of the biographer's life? Does the past still exist? This is the eighth novel I've read by Lively, and she does not disappoint.I highly recommend this novel by this intelligent, amusing and, yes, lively writer!

I am sorry that this one is out of print and hope that it will be reissued soon! I think this is one of the great Penelope Lively's finest novels. It's a page-turner, a skillful interweaving of infidelity, the English countryside, travels abroad, meditations on the writing of history and books, and realistic observations of such foibles as romantic delusion and academic pompousness. Ultimately it is a forgiving tale. I couldn't relate to any one particular character but felt I recognized them all.

Characterization Techniques and Tabulations for Organic Nonlinear Optical Materials
Published in Hardcover by Marcel Dekker (01 May, 1998)
Amazon base price: $275.00
Average review score:

The book's description of how to do nonlinear optical experiments is outstanding. I have never seen a book that explains how measurements are done and how one can relate measurements to susceptibilities. These kinds of details are never described in journal articles and can usually be found only in hard-to-find Ph.D. dissertations. Many of the chapters are written by the experts that invented the measurement techniques being discussed, so this book gives you an inside track. The first three chapters very nicely present the theory that is used in the rest of the book. Given that each chapter is written by a different group of people, the book fits together nicely. This is the one book I would choose to take to a desert island because it has all the basics. A must buy for anyone interested in the cutting edge of materials nonlinear optics.

This book is one of the best resources I've seen. Nonlinear optical properties are tabulated and experimental techniques are described. Chapter 3 is an extremely useful treatment of the relationship between molecular and bulk properties and includes lots of stuff that's never been published anywhere else. I use it as a reference all the time. The book is pricey but worth every penny.

Dr. Jonsen is one the nation's germinal thinkers in the field of bioethics. Through his experience and associations at several of the renowned medical academic institutions in this coutnry he sets forth a clear systematic approach to problems in bioethics. This includes a review of his "4-box" method for approaching ethical problems and then reviews basic ethical principles as well as legal definitions. His approach to clincal dilemmas provides a refreshing analytical process for dilineating issues and conflicts.

The authors suggest another method of evaluating ethical dilemmas. They suggest one examine the situation in light of medical indications, patient preferences, quality of life, and contextual features.
Because the approach is clinical, rather than theoretical, some of the medical details presented are somewhat technical. This is a book for those working in a medical setting or otherwise engaged with medical ethics.
I read the book based on the recommendation of a bioethics lecturer. It was further recommended recently by the Director of the Program in Medical Ethics for University of California, Irvine.

The inter-disciplinary dialogue of Sciences and Theology constitutes Worhting's thesis. There is a world of stuff out there that most of us (Christians) don't even bother in questioning or reading about. Today, Science and Theology are definitely undergoing a major shift. They are starting to learn from each other concepts, ideas, beliefs, understandings, etc. This is a good book for the lay person that does not see any good in sciences, or for the scientist that does not see the point in theology, or even for the person that (like me) is seeking to study both (sciences and theology) at the same time!

Worthing brings together so much information, so many world views, and so many fields of inquiry that I felt I must have this book. I know it will be a reference work I will go back to time and time again. I have an evangelical Christian background, and I found my belief in the Bible as sacred writing honored. However, I found my assumptions about God and His Word constantly challenged by the many perspectives Worthing brought to mind. God, Creation, and Contemporary Physics is not an easy read (at least not for me!), but every page was worthy reading.

This is an outstanding and reliable resource on diving in thailand and burma. The author writes with clarity. It is an enjoyable read even if you can't get out there as often as you'd like...
