Not exactly Truth in Packaging.
...I ordered this book as a gift for my brother-in-law, who's into motorcycles. I thought the book would be exactly what the title said: a celebration of the long, proud history of Harley-Davidson, replete with gorgeous, suitable-for-framing photos of the company's products. The book arrived. I took one look at it, and gave it instead to my friend Bob, who has a taste for oddities. Bob took one look at it, and exclaimed, "THIS IS A COFFEE-TABLE BOOK ABOUT HELL'S ANGELS!" As indeed it is, down to the last bike-chain-wielding bruiser and Jello-wrestling biker babe. Sure, they all ride Harleys, but Harley-Davidson itself is--shall we say--peripheral to the book's actual theme. The photos are very well-done, if suitable-for-framing pix of Hell's Angels are what you want.

¿Classic Harley-Davidson,¿ Hardback
Considered a classically American symbol of freedom, the Harley-Davidson motorcycle is captured in 150 full-color photographs and engaging writing in this Thunder Bay Press hardback. "Classic Harley-Davidson" focuses on the machines' emotive power as well as biker lifestyle. Written by Mark Williams. 144 pages.

See Mark Hirschey in action. He is always wrong on the Yahoo and Motely Fool message boards. Look under mhirschey.

Head Scratcher
This book unlike many undergrad books appears to be intentionally elusive. It's examples transcend the entire chapter instead a clear example followed by more challenging ones. I have to scour the pages for clues as to how to approach one of the end of the chapter problems and still I find myself guessing. The books structure is a mish/mash. I can't believe I have to endure another two moths of this. MBA Student.

Managerial Economics Works
For those in Executive MBA programs, this is a terribly useful supporting text for any managerial economics programs. The authors are very aware of who their audience is -- all learning is in a managerial framework (as opposed to the dryer, more theoretical, straight economics textbooks).

They cover the basics, but also do a great job on game theory and probablistic decision making. I had no economics before reading this, and found it clear and understandable even for the most abstruse concepts. Highly recommended.

Accounting for Dummies
Too much time is spent on problems that do not require such exposition -- and more complex and real-life problems are avoided. This study guide is not much help.

Garbage!
Jan Williams, Dean of the Business School at UTK, is known for neither his creativity or knowledge. This book demonstrates that his reputation is well deserved.

Excelent paperwork material!
This is an excelent suplemental book to "Financial Accounting" 9th edition. It gives all of the papers needed for all of the problems so that instead of spending your time drawing tables and charts, you can simply fill in the blanks on the special forms provided for each problem...

Blue Bonnets O'er the Border: The 79th New York Cameron Highlanders

Horrible! Discusting work!
This is a horrible book. I don't recommend it at all. The 79th New York "Highlanders" were mostly consisted of Irish immigrants and normal New Yorkers. Only 300 actual Scott's were in the unit. They never wore kilts/ trousers etc. Photos from the time period actually show this to be false about the kilt wearing. The stupidest mistake yet in the book, is how he refers to "lieutenant" Todd, when in actuality Todd only reached the rank of Sergeant. His misleading info is a horrible glance at this great unit. I'm ashamed to say I bought the book thinking it was historically accurate...only to find is was the worst book ever written. For a true glimpse at the 79th, get Sgt. Todd's book.

Bad history through plaid-colored glasses
I was truly disappointed in this book. It is filled with inaccuracies, and frequently presents the author's assumptions and predispositions as fact, without sufficient documentation to back up his claims.

The book is terribly biased towards providing "documentation" for those who wish to portray the 79th as a bunch of Celtic yahoos, when the original 79th was nothing of the sort. He consistently ignores the decidedly non-Scottish ethnic majority of the regiment. Again and again, he seems more determined to put a Scottish spin on the regiment, rather than contibute any worthwhile historical research on it.

The only good thing that can be said of the book is that some of the photos are rather interesting. Unfortunately, he also published many modern drawings and sketches without indicating that they are not contemporary to the Civil War, or made by members of the regiment.

It is highly disappointing, as I hoped that the book would not be yet another ex! ample of the usual nonsense and drivel written about this fine regiment. As another reviewer commented, see Todd's regimental history for a real look at this highly honored regiment.

A greatly disappointing work.
McKnight's "Blue Bonnet's O'er the Border" fell well short of this reader's expectations. First, it is woefully brief: the text of the book is but 163 pages, at least 40 of which are occupied by illustrations or maps. As any student of the Civil War knows, a mere 120 to 130 pages is not nearly enough to cover the exploits of a three-year volunteer regiment. Second, the work is full of factual errors and misleading statements, too numerous to recount here. Two exaples stand out in my mind. Clearly, the author, a 79th New York reenactor and self-proclaimed Scottish enthusiast, has used this book to prove the Scottish identity of the members of the 79th New York. To do so, he has taken liberties with historical fact. For instance, the regiment, contrary to McKnight's claims, was not comprised predominently of Scots. Though at the core of the regiment were the Scottish members of the prewar 79th New York State Militia, these 300 men were eventually equalled--or even outnumbered--in the unit by Irish immigrants. The book is also advertised as the first history of this colorful regiment. It is not. 79th New York veteran William Todd published a history of the regiment in 1886. Unlike McKnight's flimsy book, Todd's work is refreshingly candid, objective, and thorough. If you really want to learn about the 79th New York, track down a copy of Todd's regimental history.

well-intentioned, but flawed, guidebook
This book has many typographical errors and some scientific errors as well. Intended to reach a nonscientific audience, the authors have oversimplified many topics to the point of giving incorrect information. Nonexpert secondary teachers, for whom the book is intended, will not be well-served and will convey incorrect information to their students if they rely heavily on this volume to the exclusion of other scholarly references in the areas of limnology, zoology, entomology, and general biology. Other general guidebooks, such as the Golden Guides or National Audobon Series provide better information, although not tailored for an educational purpose. Teachers should use this book with caution with respect to the scientific material. Although the science-in-action concept is pedagogically appealing, there are too many errors in this book. With a thorough editing by a knowledgeable expert, this could be a useful tool for the high school classroom.

Simplistic
I was greatly disappointed in this book. The writing style was inconsistent and the layout was visually obnoxious. I mention this because if there was any useful information in this book, the presentation distracted from it incredibly.

The primary points in this book were elementary, and most people could be more creative and productive without this book. I would not recommend this book. If you have a good business plan, have a group of friends read it, take them out to dinner and brainstorm. You will have more fun, and get a better return on investment.

I guess it's fascinating stuff to a lawyer (which is what the author is), but most of these cases are so off the wall and bizarre they are irrelvant to us plebes.

Hit and Miss
Elmore and Heald is a very hit and miss book. The first chapter about simple transverse waves on strings is pretty good except for the confusing treatment of Fourier series (which I can't imagine would help anyone who hasn't seen them before). Chapter 3 on elastic theory was fine too and the EM waves stuff in chapter 8 wasn't bad.

However, the introduction to tensors in chapter 7 and their application to more complex elastic theory was horrible. The dyadic notation they use is really old-fashioned and their presentation is confusing. The stuff in chapter 12 on fourier transforms and integrals wasn't that great either.

More generally, the problem is that it spends too much time diving into excruciating detail without teaching and emphasizing important concepts. Not to mention the fact that there are no example problems.

How did this get past the proofreaders??
I picked this up in a bookstore for my English Composition CLEP test, and got through four pages, finding three typographical errors in the example questions--before I realized that they were unintentional. Unacceptable, for sure.

There are too many typographical errors in this book
This book has too many typographical errors. I used 3 books,Cracking the Clep(Princeton),Clep English composition(Comex),and Barrons. The first two are GREAT books that provide the background(nuts and bolts)needed to pass the english test. Barrons has plenty of sample questions, but lacks english grammar review material. I would not recommend this book to anyone.

Don't waste your money, I'm returning mine to the store
I bought this book as an impulse at a book store, wanting to CLEP the English Composition exam. Unfortunatly, this book is riddled with technical errors throughout. I took the initial exam, missing several questions like I suspected. But the reason I missed some of the questions was because the answers were wrong. At page 62, I had seen enough errors to make me want to return this book. Don't buy it, try something else.

Below average text
Poor coverage of concepts and poor exposition of examples.

B-O-R-I-N-G
ELEMENTARY. BORING. NOT CHALLENGING. MISSES SEVERAL IMPORTANT ISSUES.

The authors could do with some refresher courses -- they seem really over the hill!

Not engaging
Introductory Accounting texts are not rocket science. This text covers similar gound as others, probably in a below-average fashion as it is extremely boring and fails to elicit student interest. There is no new ground or any theoretical breakthroughs. It would have been nice if the text had addressed some issues of current concern to managers and accountants -- such as issues of fraudulent ethics and international accounting. Jan Williams et al. seem to be unaware of current issues bothering accountants, but it is probably too much to expect anything cutting-edge from a book of this type or by these authors.
