fantastic
The Naxos recording is an excellent rendition of RIII. The characterization is rich and well done. Full of passion and rage, you don't need to see the actors to "see" the play. The scene with Anne is particularly good.

Galbraith - don't miss him!
When I borrowed this book at the library, I had never read Galbraith before, and intended to read just a few chapters. Now I am still reading his books.

Galbraith is funny. You learn a lot from him, he makes you see under the surface of things. He is never boring. His writing style is exceptionally elegant. And he obviously is a very good man.

Comprehensive heavyweight
This is a suitably vast book for a vast subject. It covers every aspect of the application of human genetics to medicine, and the reviews are not only an ideal introduction to a genetic disease, but are heavily referenced as well. This makes it ideal as a guide to the most recent literature on the subject. The introductory chapters are essential reading as well.

A family history that is also a poem
This spare, 170-page prose work is not a memoir in the usual sense of the word: it is a collection of visceral memories, some extended, some quite brief, all of which hinge on the author/poet's intensely felt relationship with his mother and father. A wide-ranging portrait of a mid-century East Coast Jewish family, Williams calls his work an "autobiographical meditation." I began reading quite skeptically, wondering why a man of age 63 would still be so caught up with family issues -- especially his unblinking descriptions of his long-dead parents' worst characteristics. But as I proceeded, I was surprised to find this seemingly self-centered meditation seeping into the musty recesses of my own memory and experience. His language is burnished to a luster; he can conjure memories of a child's-eye view from the top of a see-saw or a momentary parental rage that has stayed with you over decades. Thus I came to find the work transformative; persuasive in the way that a poem can take you somewhere you weren't planning to go. I am going to recommend "Misgivings" to all my grown-up men friends.

Making It New
The rediscovery of Greek and Roman literature kickstarted the Renaissance in Europe. In a similar way, though on a somewhat smaller scale, the conveniently Imagist makeover of Chinese poetry by Ezra Pound and Amy Lowell undoubtedly had a seismic and far-reaching effect on later 20th century American poetry. In his learned Introduction to this outstanding and indispensable Anthology, Weinberger traces the many subsequent debts owed by a galaxy of fine American poets to that seminal work of re-invention. Such impressively talented scholar-translators as Burton Watson, J. P Seaton, Jonathan Chaves and several others receive an honourable mention, though their work is well anthologised elsewhere, and Weinberger¡¦s brief seems to have been only to include full-time poets: with the possible exception of Hinton, that is. (However, Sam Hamill's, Arthur Sze's and David Young's names have inexplicably been left out: all three of them marvellous contemporary re-interpreters of the classical Chinese tradition, and all three fine poets in their own right.)

Weinberger concentrates in particular on five exemplary writers: Ezra Pound himself, William Carlos Williams, Kenneth Rexroth, Gary Snyder, and David Hinton. They are certainly all major figures, and it's useful to have them grouped together in this way (particular since the last of them diverges in such interesting ways from the Imagist 'Less is More'tradition: though he certainly 'makes it new' in accordance with that central dictum, which is even quoted in the original Chinese characters both on the cover and on the titlepage).

I thought I already knew quite a lot about American translators from classical Chinese---a whole shelf of mine already groans under their weight---but the William Carlos Williams renderings were entirely new to me, and so were some of the later Pound translations.

For this reader it's hard to contain his excitement at such a beautifully produced edition (only spoiled by a spine-label that's somehow been glued on upside down), and I recommend anyone interested in either recent American poetry or in the classical Chinese tradition to go out and buy it straight away. It will admirably complement Minford and Lau's recent historical anthology of all translations (both European and American, and both scholarly and 'creative'), which of course covers a much broader range, but which is similarly ground-breaking and enthralling to read.

helpful, smart, and compact without being a mere outline
I began a complete reading of Shakespeare and along the way I started browsing secondary works here and there, and this one really began to stand out for me. The layout of the book makes it easy to browse, and the individual takes on each play are unpredictable though not eccentric. For instance plays that are generally universally regarded as substandard Shakespeare (such as Timon of Athens or Pericles) are given the benefit of the doubt that maybe their worth lies in other areas than where the general run of criticism has determined it should lie. The chapters for each play are not too long, and they're broken up into useful sections (story, main characters, general criticism, performance history, etc)... The Complete Works of Shakespeare is one of the few summit works of the world, and a person really shouldn't get to weighted down with secondary works about the plays themselves, but this book is very compact and to the point and helpful and worth having if you're just going to have a few secondary works to help you along...

Public Policy Analysis: A Political Economy Approach

Excellent Introduction to Policy Analysis
This is a very effective introductory text for the study of public policy. Rather than focussing exclusively on 'areas' of policy (e.g., agricultural policy, welfare policy, etc...), the authors develop the theoretical tools that allow the student to wrap his/her mind around the bigger issues. Students learn about how markets, governments and other mechanisms of collective action interact to help develop policy responses and the virtues and shortcomnings of each of these mechanisms. The book is easily digestible by undergraduates and is extremely clear, especially when explaining traditionally more complex ideas like social choice dilemmas. All in all, an outstanding text to learn about the study of public policy.

A good collection at a best $ per problem ratio !
A collection of tough 100 problems of many math branches (unsorted accordingly), for undergraduates training towards competitions. Has the advantage of suggesting hints, in additions to the full solutions. A short "Sources" section contains sources , generalizations and alternative solutions for some of the problems. This book is a twin-book to "the green book of mathematical problems" by the same authors. A very good bargain !
