A deeply penetrating psychological account
Dr. Clark has struck a sensitive nerve in the consciousness of a nation in his 1965 study of black neighborhoods. Revised in 1989 with an introduction by William Julius Wilson, and a foreword by Gunnar Myrdal, it is apparent that other scholars respect Clark's work as well. I was particularly impressed by the self-honesty of his methodology -- he calls it his "involved observer" method, which shows much more concern for the subjects of the study than traditional "disinterested observer" approaches, espoused by so-called "value-free" social scientists. Also recommended are other books by Clark, and most anything by Cornel West, Lewis R. Gordon, Allen Spear, and Alex Kotlowitz. A related book to "Dark Ghetto" is "Racism & Psychiatry," by Alexander Thomas and Samuel Sillen, with an introduction by K. Clark.

Great Missourians
Biographies of 700+ individuals who have contributed significantly to the development of the state of Missouri with many achieving national fame as well. The book draws from all fields of activities--politics, business, science, religion, art, etc. without regard to race, gender, etc. Although the book seems a little pricy at first glance, I wasn't disappointed--the thoroughness and quality makes it well worth the price.

Recommended book for practical distance learners
In this practical and timely volume, Distance Learning, The Essential Guide, authors, Marcia L. Williams, Kenneth Paprock, and Barbara Covington, provide clear commentary on the basic issues surrounding distance learning. This book presents an original combination of learning resources like reading case studies, tear-out worksheets, and checklists. In addition, the book contains templates designed to be copied and a very useful and updated glossary of terms, converting this book in a practical material indispensable for all teachers who need to go inside of the distance leaning world. The authors organized the book in six chapters that provide you with the foundation needed to teach from a distance. To begin introducing open and distance learning, the first chapter presents the history and growth of this field and the way evolving technologies have been transitioned into existing distance learning formats. The authors continue in Chapter Two by analyzing the concepts and components that make up an open and/or distance learning environment as well as including recommendations in order that the reader can appreciate a futurist view in roles and competencies for a specialization in this area. Using several case studies, Chapter Three introduces a broad overview of all practical considerations that can be applied as you set up an open and /or distance learning network. These include: equipment, network, technical, usage, cost, and also advantages and disadvantages that you can find in the process of implementation. The transitional change process, resisting change, identifying of barriers, and ways how others have overcome educational situations by building on comfortable and familiar scenarios are detailed in Chapter 4. In Chapter Five, the paradigm of teaching from a distance is radically different from teaching face-to-face is broken. The authors claim "it is true that there are differences, it is also true that the basic principles for teaching and learning from a distance are the same as the basic principles for any teaching and learning environment." The last chapter includes information to begin to turn verbal information into visual communication, including ideas on working with space, working with text and fonts, and visual relationships. Williams, Paprock, and Covington present a very practical book with a strong theoretic foundation. This book lends itself as an important resource for the every professional who needs to use distance learning, including teachers, trainers, and every person that want to transmit knowledge using the infinite possibilities of the technology in an efficient and effective way.

Effective Medical Testifying: A Handbook for Physicians
Published in Paperback by Butterworth-Heinemann Medical (1998)
Authors: William T. Tsushima and Kenneth K. Nakano
Amazon base price: $34.95
Average review score:

Informative, well written, and dense with practical advice.
I'm a practicising architect and picked up this book on a lark. I was very surprised that the subject matter had relevancy to my profession as well. It is extremely well written, dense with information, and arranged so that the reader does not fall asleep on so serious a topic. The authors make remarkable common sense, and offers a wealth of advice, by branching their wisdom, rather than reworking and reiterating the same theme over and over again. Since one of the authors is a notable clinical psychologist, it was interesting that each participant in a theoretical courtroom case was mind analyzed, from the juror, to the defendant, to the prosecutor, to the expert medical witness. By understanding the role, mind sets, and goals of each participant, one understands the nature of the beast, and thereby will be comfortable, and achieve success in a courtroom scenario. The book is advice specific and provides many courtroom dialogues to digest. The applications of this book are more far reaching than just for the "expert medical witness".

I bought this for both sets of parents!
There are a lot of retirement books out there, so I went with the one with a recognizable name and I'm glad I did. My parents haven't thought enough about retirement and I wanted to spur them to action. They were pleased to find out that there were many things they could do now, even at this late date, to help them, and they even starting giving me tips on ways I could start planning. So then I gave this book to my husband's parents who are already retired, and they ended up buying it for friends too. There are tons of tips, easy things you can do, worksheets, charts, action lists, tips--even a section on how to overcome adverse events like losing your job and divorce. It is worth the read. You'll learn a lot and be happy you did.

the magic of shakespeare
I teach third grade in an urban school in a very large district and have used Burdett's version of Hamlet as my sole reading program component for the last 2 months. My students have showed more growth in comprehension, vocabulary, writitng skills and public speaking, than I have ever seen with any other class. Not only has their work showed such growth, but their passion for reading has flourished unbelievably. My class ranges from d's to average b's to high honor roll and every child has grown and every child now loves Shakespeare. The wording that Burdett uses is enjoyable and comprehendable yet challenging enough to keep the educational bar raised without compromising the accuracy and intent of Shakespeare's original version. Burdett also incorporates written material and illustrations by students in her second grade class. This helps the children in my class relate to the book even more. They have developed a thirst for Shakespeare that I enjoy trying to quench everyday. Every child is quoting Shakespeare and reciting soliloquys, and I credit much of that to Burdett and her brilliant writing. I loved this book so much that I have personally purchased her entire series and have displayed them all in my classroom. These books are checked out by students in my class everday. They are by far the most frequently read books in my class. She has truly brought Shakespeare back to life in the classroom and on behalf of my students and myself as well, I thank her. Classic literature is back!!!!!

Handbook of X Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy: A Reference Book of Standard Spectra for Identification and Interpretation of Xps Data

A must-buy
I thoroughly recommend the purchase of this book to anyone engaged in the study of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy as it almost functions as a "bible" of standard spectra for the elements. I also like the simple summary of the technique which actually includes a lot of information that would be hard to tease out of the overly technical texts on XPS that are around. For Universities and Research Institutes who have personnel experienced in XPS or who have the instrumentation, it is an essential purchase

Helpful series; good book
I bought this entire New Testament series commentary to help me in teaching an adult Sunday School class. I'm glad I did! All of the books include a verse-by-verse description that is very helpful. A teaching outline is included for each chapter, along with discussion questions and an area with a more deeper discussion of certain topics important to that chapter.

As a new teacher, I have found this series invaluable in preparing my lessons. I think you'll like this one.
