I found this book at a Library sale. I had never heard of the author. I now want to read all his books. This starts out in early 1930's and takes you up through 1960's. It follows the life of a Corsican man Bounaparte Sartene. A thoughly enjoyable book. Unfortunately not in print.

Written by WW2 veteran Sptifire pilot W.A. Bishop, this book covers the last famous air battle of the war. Mr Bishop provides much background information on the planning of this battle, Then procedes to cover it's execution and overview of the results. Provides historical information on the thoughts and actions of many verterans, from both sides. An invaluable referance to anyone interested in the last months of the the Air War in Europe. After reading it, I was amazed to find out that this raid could have indeed altered the course of the war, and delayed its end in the West. This book needed to be written, and Mr. Bishop covers all bases. Highly recommended, PHG

I was amazed at how Bromwitch drew all these great connections to the work of Romantic Poet and Baretta star, Robert Blake. I had no idea that the plot to do away with fellow poet Bonnie Lee Blakey was actually inscribed in Tintern Abbey. This is Bromwitch's great insight, and boy, did I lose a lot of sleep over it. I am also impressed with the claim that all of Wordsworth's poetry grew out of his own obsession with the female reproductive system, particularly that of his sister, Dorothea. After reading this book I quickly decided to disown the book, and lent it on purpose to a friend with Alzheimer's, so he would not remember from whence it came. So, I say, thank god for disowning memory!

This text is the result of the author's exhaustive inter-disciplinary research seeking to identify the origins of the three "fleurs de lis", as armorial emblems of the kings of France. The search probes the Dark Ages and beyond, encountering references to the legends of Troy, the Holy Trinity, Saint-Denis and more, all reflected in the royal lily banner.
William M. Hinkle is professor emeritus of art history, at Columbia University, who tells the complex tale of how the "fleur de lis" evolved into royal French emblem, and a sign of God's favor.
Hinkle, provides 56 plates to illustrate the text, plus detailed appendixes that explain the finer points of the origin of "fleurs de lis".
The bibliography provides a wealth of resources and offers materials divided into disciplines, thus: 1- Heraldry, Sigillography and Numismatics; 2- History; 3- Literature; 4- Art.
In the arcane, almost mystical processes at work in the evolution of the symbolic/heraldic representation of French kings, this book is vaguely reminiscent of James Frazer's "The Golden Bough", as it touches on the mystique of kings and the mythology of kingship.
A delight to the eye, this book is handsomely presented in startling French blue with gold lettering, all wrapped in a similarly colored parchment-like dust jacket. It is very well done.
Hinkle's work should be in the library of every serious Europhile and anyone else who has an interest in the art, mythology, heraldry, religion, literature, etc., which underlie the development of Western Civilization: the premier cultural achievement of mankind ---- don't leave your castle without it!

The biography of film star Frances Farmer is truly one of the most heartwretching, depressing and indepth bios I've ever read. Great insight to Hollywood of the 30's and 40's and great insight into one of Hollywood's most beautiful and tragic stars.

I knew little about the involvement of the French in America before reading this book. I know a lot more now. Covering mainly Canada but also Lousiana and the French West Indies for almost three centuries, this book reads like a novel. Only you already know the end!
Written by a british, who leaves and teaches in Canada, this book always try not to take sides, in an history where broken promises are the norm.
I was reading this book during the war in Iraq (2003), when French bashing was a national sport in the US. Looking back in our history books allows to see that not too long ago, France was America's best ally against ... Great Britain.

This is the wonderful story of a group of girls living in an orphanage in France. It is a tale of love and friendship and adventure. It comes away with the message that your family is whoever happens to love and care for you. With beautiful illustrations by Garth Williams. This was one of my favorite books as a child, and I finally got one located through amazon.com-every time I see it on the shelf, I get a little whif of childhood, and it's a perfume for all ages.

Italian American Folklore (American Folklore Series)

As an Italian-American myself, I was searching to fill the gaps on some of the details regarding some of the traditions and superstitions that my grandparents believed in. Since both of them have passed away, we have been filling in a family tree and are supplementing our research with some of the rituals and customs we have come to enjoy and would like to pass them along to our children.
This book was right on the money! Very enjoyable and easy to follow! My father and aunt and uncle enjoyed the portions I read aloud to them-- it brought back a lot of memories and is allowing us to build a more robust family history story! Excellent reading!

This book was originally published in 1918, and it shows. Throughout, the author routinely refers to the Indians as "savages," which is a little shocking to those used to more modern books. However, all other peoples in this drama (French, British, Canadians and Americans) are disparaged at one time or another, so a little tolerance of the author will be required to read this book.
That said, though, the book is well written and highly informative. The book's tone is far from the dry and academic, which characterizes many older history books. What I liked about this book is that it examines the struggles from the French point of view, which is refreshingly different that of the British. So, if you want to learn about the struggles with French Canada, from another perspective, then this book is for you.
