An impressive collection of thirty-six letters
Letters To Dalton: Higher Education And The Degree Salesmen by education observer and commentator John R. Turner is an impressive collection of thirty-six letters in which he deftly presents a variety of attitudes and viewpoints critiquing high schools and colleges. Sometimes invective, sometimes inspirational, always with an eye toward the foundation of educational institutions rather than their surface issues, Letters To Dalton: Higher Education And The Degree Salesmen is an erudite presentation and highly recommended reading -- especially for those charged with responsibilities as educational administrators, policy makers, and curriculum developers.

Lianda: A Chinese University in War and Revolution

Best book about a Chinese university
John Israel has done an incredible job in collecting materials about this university. It's especially impressive because the university was formed during the Anti-Japanese war, a lot of original materials were destroyed. He gives a detailed, analytical description of the National Southwest Associated University which is unique in human history. He also introduces the reader to the best professors available in China during this time and the patriotism of the students. As a professional historian, I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Chinese higher-education.

Insight into Indian education
*Next Steps* is a collection of essays on different, important aspects of the state of education for Native students across the country today. The breadth of materials present in the essays and the overall insight they offer is impressive. Although it does focus more on current practices of Indian education than future goals and ideas as the title implies, it is an important book. It is also very nice to see that all essay authors are Native themselves. Anyone interested in Indian education or teaching Native students should by all means read this book.

Excellent *****John Merril has done his homework.
John Merril sets up three portfolios, each holding stocks bonds and cash.He takes the reader thru every bull and bear market from 1926 thru 1997. Many authors of investment books avoid the investment history of the 1930s and other prolonged bear markets but Merril wants the reader to realize the risk and the reward that comes whith investing.I would urge anyone who has a 401k plan or Ira to purchase this book. Mr.Merril may have some different views then others when it comes to indexing and foreign investing but explains his views honestly. This is a great book and I don`t know why since it`s published over a year ago that no one has reviewed it.This is a book that should be updated every year.

Robert Maynard Hutchins: A Memoir

A perfect memoir, aware of its pretensions but honest always
If you've never been exposed to the "Great Books" movement in higher education, you probably don't know who Robert Hutchins was. I only knew him as a dazzling champion of this almost-forgotten ideal of learning, as did his contemporaries. Milton Meyer showed me a man superhuman in his aims and yet tragically flawed. He espoused the Classics without being a true student of them, and yet was he not more Shakespearean than any of the professors he governed? Anyway, the book moved me. If you have any ability to be inspired by the story of an imperfect man, read this book.

An essential tool for professionals in education
The word "learning" has become very prominent in contemporary education terminology. Official policy document issued by organizations like UNESCO, or even European Union and US goverment publications have gradually replaced the words "education" or "training" with "learning". This fact has created some confusion among educators, curriculum design experts, and of course students. That is why a book such as "The theory and practice of learning" can be of great help to all of us who are involved in the process of education. It is a clear written comprehensive book that examines globally all aspects of the learning process (theory and practice). The book presents not only the views and opinions of the writers but it also demonstrates the most important features from theories of great educationalists who have influenced our society. I believe that reading this book will definetely help to understand the current trends in education. Congratulations!

A short, practical guide to constructing fair tests.
When I told the saleswoman at the Teachers College Bookstore what I was looking for - a practical guide to constructing multiple choice tests - she said something to the effect of "Practical? You won't find anything like that here." But then she dug around in a corner and came up with one copy of this 100-page paperback. This book read so easily, and addressed the key issues so directly, that I finished it off on two subway rides and immediately implemented the recommendations on my company's multiple-choice tests that accompany self-study guides. Subjects include "clueing" - smart test-takers who answer questions by eliminating wrong answers - and the differences between absolute and normative tests. I'm not a professional educator. If I were, I would probably find more faults with this book. But it served my purpose very well. Multiple choice tests may have problems, but unfortunately, I have to use them, and so I need to know how to construct them. This book told me how, in a way that was painless or even fun. One criticism: I would like to have seen a discussion of how long a multiple choice test needs to be in order to be confident with a given level of certainty - say, 95% - that the correct answers are not due to chance alone. (If you want to answer this question, I recommend another inexpensive paperback - The Harper Collins Dictionary of Statistics - specifically the 3-page entry on the binomial distribution.)
