Nicely detailed, not so nicely written
I enjoyed this book for the wealth and detail of information it conveyed. However, the author's writing style didn't make this book very "readable". It was something of a labor to wade though the pages of extraordinary detail. Additional efforts could have made this book flow better. Hence I recommend it to those with specific interest in the topic, rather than those seeking entertainment or just a good read.

An in-depth look at the Soldiers serving in the west.
This book really enlightens the reader with interesting personal narratives. The book also dispells the myth of a "John Wayne, She wore a Yellow Ribbon" frontier Army. It picks up from the end of the Civil War and leads you straight into the Spanish American War. A wonderful book for those interested in in the daily lives of the soldiers form typical daily lives to military justice. This book also helped with my summer Interpretation job at Fort Mackinac. Michigan were we portray 1880's U.S. Army.

Solid history on the frontier soldier
As I cast about for research material for an upcoming book, several American Indian War experts recommended Don Rickey's book as the "Bible" on the frontier soldier's life. I am not an Indian War buff, but I can tell you this book is chocked full of details and insights that are not likely to be found collected in any other single volume.

The book is broken down into logical chapters, from a description of the Western troubles to the typical routines of the soldiers' discharges. We are treated to what might be some of the last in-depth interviews with Indian War veterans and, as has been pointed out, we begin to get a feel of the frontier soldier's daily life as 99 percent boredom and physical labor and 1 percent terror.

Many books have been written around the edges of this subject, and several were awful in their historical value. But this is a solid history, well-researched and full of interesting anecdotes to boot!

An insightful book on the career of a legendary Hollywood PI
I disagree with the review which states Don over uses his poetic license to show the reader he "saves the day", that's what private investigators do. People hire private investigators to succeed, and that's what Don does. Crutchfield captures the essence of the "old guard" gum shoe. The old guard uses congnition instead of ammunition. I purchased Don's book in Boca Raton, FL recently while I was conducting a case, and found it to be well written, certainly in the style of a very professional private investigator. The case histories and side commentary really hits home. I look forward to some day in which I can meet Don and tell him how much he's influenced my career. Patrick K. I'd give it a B+ rating
I thought this book was pretty good. Don Crutchfield wrote as if he was talking to you. If you like gossip and juicy hearsay, this is the book for you. He has inside stories to the Beatles, Marlon Brando, Terry Moore, Jerry Lewis, Michael Jackson, and more. I've read other "tell all" books before, but what I thought Don brought, that other autthors couldn't, was a objective perspective to these celebrities' lives. As far as I know, these stories are true but I'm sure a little embellished. The one thing that got on my nerves was the way Don always came out as the hero, the one guy who was right, "If if wasn't for me...". That theme was all worn out by Chapter 3. Overall, just fun, light entertainment.

Good intentions, poor execution
I hate to trash any book, especially one about Atlanta, but this one just did not do what it should have. If you overlook the obvious mistakes (the Civil War did not begin in 1851) and the short descriptions there are still problems that make the book difficult to use. First, it is cumbersome. The publisher should have made it slightly narrower so that it could fit in my back pocket. Its not off by much, but carrying it in my jacket was a pain and I dropped it twice. Second, the maps are useless, unless you intend to stay in the one area being talked about at the time. I wanted to see the relationship between the CNN Center and Peachtree Center MARTA station so I could avoid having to walk to the GWCC/Georgia Dome/Omni station and changing at Five Point. Can't do it with this book cause the maps don't show it. I dont think Ebeneezer Baptist Church is a major attraction and I don't consider either Wren's Nest or Zoo Atlanta attractions for kids. So if you are looking for attractions and only check out the stuff listed for adults, you will miss two of Atlanta's best and go to one that's so-so.

Where does this book hit its mark? Author Mary Lee does a pretty good job with her best places to....

Highly recommended!
This book isn't perfect, but is much better than Atlanta (Edge Guides) that I previously bought (and returned!). Good maps, sufficient to guide you in&around the city. Of course, if you need more detailed guide, you also need to buy a real map. Lots of thorough hotel & restaurants review. Info about public transportation, etc. They managed to cram a lot of info in this book. Buy this one!

Useful
A useful and compact guide, focused on Rocky Mountain National Park and the nearby towns of Estes Park and Grand Lake. Practical tips. The chapters on day hikes included something for everyone -- trails ranging from 1/2 mile very easy trails to very difficult trails. The maps were a little difficult to read. A useful addition would be a fold-out color map.

I like it!
This is an interesting, well written book. The towns profiled are described in both their past "glory" and their current state. There are many good pictures and engaging accounts from old timers who where in on the boom. I just wish there was a better map to help place these towns. This is a welcome addition to my collection.

An outdated book with Party being the main word !
I have read the book and found it to be outdated. Many party spots don't exisit and the ones covered seem more like an advertisment for the bar. I wonder if the author was receiveing kickbacks. You be better off going to your local bar and buying a drink before wasting money on this book.

Use this as a basic guide for clubs by area ...
This is a GREAT book - IF you use it simply to search for clubs in a particular area of SF. Say, you are in the Haight-Ashbury area and are wondering if there are any party places around, you can quickly locate them and get a feel for what kind of place it is going to be. The book in itself is not overly entertaining, and not quite critical enough (so I can relate to one of the reviews here). But it's definitely a book worth having.

Excellent and detailed party guide
I LIVE in San Francisco and this book is great! I party, but don't know every night spot by any means. This book tells about a variety of spots that I might not make it too. it is very comprehensive and needs to be cos SF is deep with parties. Like a party phone book!
