You can almost smell the buffalo cooking in the camp.
The Wild West was an even more heroic epoch than is commonly understood. While Buffalo Bill became a self-promoter, basic facts are clear: he was a superior plains guide and scout and Indian fighter. He really was the master hunter of buffalo from horseback. He was a Pony Express rider, with all that entailed. He was friends with Wild Bill, Custer, and other notables. He was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for bravery on the battlefield (though sadly it was removed many years later because of a bureaucratic technicality of how he had been employed by the Army, not because of any change in the evaluation of the heroic deeds.

A most fascinating book. It gives one a different perspective to hear it from a participant.END

Incredible Guide Book!
The Washington Handbook is the best book I have found for information on the state of Washington! It is truly comprehensive in it's coverage of the entire state. Being a member of a military family, moving to a new location can be a very frightening prospect. This book has the type of in-depth information that makes Washington feel familiar without ever even being there! I've looked at MANY travel guides (Fodor's, etc.) and the Washington Handbook outshines them all.

It's like a virtual motorcyle trip.
This books gives some pretty cool descriptions on different areas in the Southwest including Southwestern Colorado. My husband and I are familiar with the Colorado chapter and it was as though we were going through it again. Except it was in words and in our minds. My husband is going to take the recommendations and ride from the Chicago Area to the Taos New Mexico area. I will follow 2 days behind him with kids in tow. The author also provides valuable information on watering holes as well as places to eat. In desert areas you want to be prepared as to where the last gas station is. The author also gives explicit details on road conditions which makes the trip a lot easier to palette knowing where the "bad" spots are. Either you choose to ride gingerly through it or go around. I highly recommend this book. It's a good read and it contains lots of valuable information.

Much Ado at the Zoo
On a field trip to the Zoo, the Powerpuff Girls found out that Mojo Jojo was going to take the rare white tiger and they stopped him from stealing it. At the end of the book they had saved the day, like they always do, and the whole class got ice cream.

Excellent book
Don and Barbara Laine have done an outstanding job in this book. I live in New Mexico and we just bought a camper, so I went to the library to get some book on where to go camping. I borrowed a couple of guides for the Southwest, but this book is the only one that anybody ever needs. Every State Park is listed in detail, even little maps for each Park are included. Furthermore they tell you exactly what to expect from each park and what there is to do. This comes in handy when travelling with kids. Equipped with this book we already went to 2 State Parks and found exactly what the Laines had described. This book is a must have for anybody that wants to explore Arizona and New Mexico.

Extremely Helpful and Informative!
I used this as my main reference book on a trip to Oregon last summer (1998). The info was current, easily understandable, directions were very accurate. I loved the list of radio stations at the end of each chapter - it eliminates searching around the dial while you drive. And I contacted cities from the list of Chambers of Commerce and received a lot of additional helpful info. The best recommendation that I can give is that I'm headed for California this summer and the Martin's book is at the top of my short list of books to buy! PS - There is a 1999 update available now.

A Must Have For The Quanah, Acme & Pacific or Frisco Fan
This book is 215 pages in length. It is a comprehensive history of the Quanah, Acme & Pacific Railway. The author has done a more than wonderful job of presenting the information in a fascinating way. I stayed awake too late on quite a few nights reading this book. The Q. A. & P. was a very small railroad but makes up for its size with loads of history and it's all in this book. My interest in this railroad is due to the fact that it later became part of the St. Louis - San Francisco (Frisco) Railway. If you are a railroad history buff you will love this book. My highest rating!
