This book is abridged
I purchased this book believing that I was getting a new edition of the classic Eric Knight children's book. This book is a picture-book version of that classic, and the text is considerably abridged. The pictures are absolutely lovely, but they cannot, in my opinion, make up for the loss of the wonderful details, the dialogue, and the glorious description that the original contained. I applaud the editors for wanting to bring back a classic, but they would have done well to consider what made the book a classic in the first place.

A Great Read!
I loved this book! Well Written. I highly recommed this book. Five stars all the way!!!

"Max's Birthday" not really about birthdays
I was disappointed with "Max's Birthday" because it wasn't about birthdays at all: it was all about Max getting a toy lobster that he was afraid of. Other than a wrapped present on the cover and a party hat and birthday-cake clothes throughout, a toddler would have a hard time knowing that this is a book about birthdays. When I bought this after a search of the Baby/Preschool category, looking under the keyword "birthday," my hope had been to obtain a couple of good books to help my two toddlers understand the concept of turning 2 and celebrating the event. To me, this just didn't cut it.

Another Great Max Book
The Max books are among my favorites for small children, and this one is no exception. While it explores concepts like "over," "under," etc., at the same time it includes interesting illustrations and a story line that preschoolers and their parents can relate to (Max is afraid of his birthday present -- a windup dragon -- at first, but after running away from it for several pages, in the end says, "Again!"). In all of the Max books that we have read so far, the author incorporates amusing common childhood traits into an entertaining story that everyone can relate to. This book gets my vote for one that parents and children will enjoy reading together, over and over.

A cute but ultra-simple book bordering on boring.
As with Rosemary Wells' other books, this one is charmingly illustrated. The bear who wants to go over the mountain is terribly cute, especially as he says goodbye to his mama before departing. However, the book is so simple that it didn't engage my 2-year-old, who loves the many other Wells books we have. The repetitive song essentially has just three lines. And, unlike other Wells books, the illustrations don't vary that much from page to page. The "Read to Your Bunny" book that kicked off this series was much more engaging, providing pleasant word and picture variations on a theme.

A good book for squirmy little ones
My one year old really likes this book & has liked it since he was really little (like 6 months or so). He likes for you to sing it to him & he likes to sit & "sing" it to himself. As always, Ms. Wells' illustrations are perfect. It's a nice way to start reading with a squirmy child because the song is already familiar. I would recommend the whole series of Bunny Reads Back.

Leave Well enough alone
I recently finished this book and I felt it was sort of boring and it wasn't one of the best mystery/suspense books I've ever read. All though there were some parts of that made you jump it was fairly dull. I give it 3 stars.

better than the average teen book
This book is about a girl who goes to babysit for some brats over summer vacation. The family she works for is rather dysfunctional and very weird. The kids are little terrors. There isn't much of a realy plot, the girl just snoops around and then the kids she babysits for snoop around, but it has some funny parts and is actually quite readable. I recomend the book to girls ages 9-12 who would rather not read the average teenage romance novel.

SOMEONE NEEDS TO LOVE ME!
This is a heartfelt emotional story about a sophmore girl named Patrice Latta being noticed by a senior named Lance Carter. Lance makes a bet with his friends that he would get this girl to commmit fornication, and this story is about what happens when she fornicates and becomes pregnant.Patrice falls in love with the boy, Lance Carter, but he only thinks that she is "kinda cute". He ends up getting engaged that summer to another girl and breaks Patrice's heart. Patrice is left alone to raise her child because she doesn't want the last link she had to Lance to be broken.I believe that this is a wonderful novel, and it is totally heartfelt. It is a presentable novel to young Americans today.

The Mystery of the tennis star
The book When No One Was Looking by Rosemary Wells, is a story about a newly discovered tennis star named Kathy. Kathy is an excellent tennis player but one thing is stopping her from getting to the top. A girl named Ruth Gumm. Kathy has worked so hard to get so far and all of her dreams were destroyed by a clumsy girl who couldn't play tennis. She just knew how to agitate Kathy and get her angry. But one day Ruth is found dead in a swimming pool and, Kathy and her entire family are the prime suspects. Kathy knows she didn't kill Ruth she just has to convince everybody else that she didn't. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes mysteries. It is different than any other book I have ever read. I thought it was well done and very interesting. It didn't get me bored after the first page. I believe that this novel is a great work by an accomplished writer.

A huge disapointment
This book is actually a cloth book. The only interactive activity it provided is the scarf on the front page. I was expecting a paperback, as stated in the edition info. ... I was also expecting interactive activates such as letting children undress Max....etc. Well, the book is essentially picture on cloth. It didn't interest my one year old. At that age, they wanted real books (such as a REAL paperback). The plot is much too simple for my three year old. I wish I had saved my money to spend on something else.

This is not a paperback!
I too was expecting a paperback, but if I had read the review information then I would have known and not purchased it. It is a simple version of the Max stories, but good for young children. My 5 yr old son loves all the Max books, even the board books meant for toddlers. But this one is too young for him to enjoy. This is a typical Max story for toddlers. I would definately purchase it for a younger child if I had one. It is not very interactive, but I was not expecting it to be one (since I thought it was a paperback). This is a good introduction to Max and his personality. I love Rosemary Wells and her stories, as do my sons.
