When No One Was Looking
This book is about Kathy Bardy. She is a tennis player, and dreams of bering famous someday. At her level tennis isn't fun, it's competition! Suddenly a terrible accident happens, and by coincidence, it involves a tennis apponent that Kathy can't beat. This book is about Kathy's tennis career and an accident that can ruin it all.

When No one Was Looking
This book was interesting, however it is not a very good mystery book. Anyone who has read Nancey Drew books would agree with me.It is about a girl named Kathy that can not beat a girl named Ruth. Every one beleves Kathy would do anything to win a game. So when Ruth is found at the bottom of the clubs pool every one thinks Kathy murderd ruth,But did she?

It's wonderful!
Using something the kids are familiar with builds their confidence as emeging readers. It's a great idea to use something like BINGO that we all sing with our kids!

Get your child ready for school
I've read a lot of 'first day of school' type books recently, getting my daughter prepared for preschool. I'd rate this as one of the better books we read, and if your child likes Yoko and the other kids in Wells' Hilltop School books, I strongly recommend it. What I like about the book is that it gently repeats the reassuring idea, that parents "will come back. They always do." Once Yoko accepts that, she's ready to be left at school by herself.

Tallchief, America's Prima Ballerina
Tallchief, America's Prima Ballerina, written by Maria Tallchief with Rosemary Wells, is a lovely, lyrical account of a young girl's fierce desire to express the music she felt within her through ballet."I was born with music that flowed through my body as naturally as blood in my veins." Both a talented pianist and dancer, Maria was encouraged by her father to choose one "star". "In the way that very young people choose, from the heart, I chose (ballet) and I chose right". Any young reader would choose right in selecting this inspiring account of a unique American star.

It's not bad.
I don't want to write a long article. I just want to tell you all that the book is very useful. It really helps my daughter who is 3 years old increase the ability of telling a story and practice her fingers and eyes at the same time. She is interested in reading and playing with it. I think the punch-out characters did attract her.

Board book fan
I knew my first son would love books when he gnawed his way through his first two board books. Now my second son is well on his way, both paging through and chewing on the sturdy board pages of this charming and colorful edition of Humpty Dumpty. Captivating rhythms and bright attention-getting illustrations are sure to delight any fan (child or adult) of Well's animal characters. Previous reviewers expressed concern about rhymes like "Davy Davy Dumpling" but before censoring this book, I'd ask them to think back to when your child was a plump and cuddly infant. How many times did you tickle him and say "I'm going to eat you up!" Did you really mean it? When you change a diaper are you "sugaring and buttering" your baby with powders and creams? I eat my baby up several times a day and it makes him laugh hysterically!

Based on reaction of my 18 month old daughter.
I am surprised to read the reviews. I do not care about rhymes and illustrations. What I care is if my kid loves it. She always asks me read to this books at least once in a day. She is so happy when I am reading this book for her. The thick pages are really important for small kids as they can not tear them off.

A big, beautiful, and lovingly selected book of Mother Goose
My daughter was given this book for her first birthday, and now that she is turning three, it is still her most treasured book. The illustrations are big and colorful, and the large text and one-rhyme-per-page format make it inviting even for the youngest listener. Iona Opie has done a wonderful job of selecting many familiar and some not-so-familiar rhymes to put in this collection. As a parent, I greatly appreciate the fact that all of these rhymes are gentle and loving, so I don't have to worry about "editing" the cruelty found in some other Mother Goose books. I can't say enough about this book except that every child should be lucky enough to own a copy.

Max's Breakfast (Max Board Books)
Published in Board book by Transworld Publishers Ltd (02 September, 1999)

Priceless story, but difficult to read aloud.
Max doesn't like eggs, yet his big sister Ruby attempts to feed him one for breakfast. Max want strawberries, but Ruby insists he eat the egg first. Max tests his older sisters resolve by trying to get out of eating that egg: he covers it with a napkin, hides it on a chair, and finally climbs down from his chair, and hides under the table to avoid eating his breakfast. Ruby finds him, and demonstrates how good eggs are by taking a bite, "See, Max, said Ruby. It's a YUMMY, YUMMY EGG." One bite turns into two, and eventually Ruby eats the entire egg. Max tosses a strawberry into the air, and with a big grin on his face declares, "ALL GONE". Ruby is exasperated.

This cute story comes as a board book, and measures 7" x 7" x ΒΌ". The text is very short; only ten pages long. Simply illustrated, yet the images are very expressive for easy comprehension. "MAX's Breakfast," is a funny tale about a picky eater, but as in many of Ms. Wells books, it is awkward to read aloud, "Eat your egg, Max, said Max's sister, Ruby." I have gotten to the point of discarding the last half of the sentences when reading her books, since they seems to flow better that way. Birth and up.

Cute, enjoyable for the very young
The illustrations are wonderful... bright and colorful enough to grab all children. The idea of the story (picky eater) is definitely an issue that children can understand, as well as parents. The story is clever, but some of the writing leaves a little to be desired. The phrases "...said Max's sister, Ruby", "said Ruby" is said seven times in the storybook... there are only ten pages... and "said Max" is written three times. Those phrases are always the ones that distract my child away from the story... and this one was no exception.

Max at his funniest
My grandchildren and I love Max & Ruby stories. Ms. Wells is very clever in the way she illustrates the characters so that the reader can actually see Max thinking about how to not have to eat the egg. If your children haven't met Max yet, then this is definitely a book for an infant or young toddler, but children who have met Max love to go back and "read" the early boardbacks on their own. It's like visiting a familiar friend.

Shy Charles

unfortunate name-calling in this book
We are tried and true Rosemary Wells fans, and are familiar with most of her books. I borrowed this one from the library, and was disappointed to find Charles' parents expressing their frustration through language like "another mother would have spanked you" for not saying thank you or goodbye (maybe Wells could have the mother model good manners rather than threatening punishment)and the father actually calling him names for not participating in football, which Dad forced on him. What a negative approach to modeling the behavior you want your child to adopt, never mind giving parents the idea that it's OK to treat a child in this manner. Needless to say, I edited it heavily when I read it, then returned it to the library post haste! Not one for my library!

A interesting look at a painfully shy mouse
Charles is not just a little shy, he is EXTREMELY shy, so shy he really doesn't seem to talk at all. As usual, Rosemary Wells is not afraid to have a hero who is quite out of the mainstream. Unlike in most of her books, Charles' parents are not very understanding of him, and seem to be at the point of being quite fed up with his shyness, which can make him seem impolite. However, people in the community seem to understand he's a special little mouse who will come out of his shell when he's ready. An unusual picture book which makes you think about how children who are not outgoing are treated.

shy is not so bad
This is a wonderful little book that makes the point that being shy is not such a terrible thing. Charles shows that he can do OK, even if he is shy. An implication is that Charles' parents may have been wrong to try to make Charles over, that maybe they should have recognized his special strengths instead of focusing on his "weak" points, so the book has a message for both children and parents.

I like this book better than "I Don't Know Why... I guess I'm Shy" (see my review there), because it has a more tolerant view of individual differences, doesn't encourage kids to approach adult strangers, and has really great, funny illustrations. (In fact, I'd love to have a print of Charles on his roller skates!)
