Comprehensive, nicely packaged
I used this book in a film studies class about four years ago and I kept it because of the wealth of information. For the first time I understood the different epochs of film not only in the U.S. but also around the world. I was introduced to a wider variety of international film and the work of Eisenstein, Renoir, Kurosawa, and others. I highly recommend this book for the concise language, easy explanations, and beautiful black and white and color reproductions from many films. This book is a page turner.

Just great
this is one of the most comprensive and clear books on film history. Just great to use it as a main reference book to college student

Wow!
If you saw me on the street you wouldn't think of me as a fan of westerns. A 14 year old wearing a Bush t-shirt is not the type of kid that even usually likes to pick up a book. But David Thompson is one of the most captivating writers I have ever had the opportunity to read. My grandfather let me borrow "Wilderness: Spanish Slaughter" and I immediatly became a fan. I have since read quite a bit of the series, with these two titles being two of my favorites. I have yet to read a bad Thompson book, but these are great!

VERY GOOD BOOK
THE BEST ONE OF THE COLLECTION

Not your Grandmother's quilts
There is truly nothing else out there quite like this book. I was looking for a book that breaks away from traditional quilting, expecially one that uses lots of curves in the design. And what a treat I found in this book! The authors use discarded clothing for fabric and buttons, and they delight in incorporating hidden elements, poetry, Chinese fortunes, removeable or repositionable parts and even game boards. Their method of sewing curves is super-easy, unlike other books in my collection. The result ? funky, creative, playful quilts that are great for, but certainly not limited to, kids. These are NOT your Grandmother's quilts! I would love to see more books by these innovative authors. If you have avoided learning to quilt because it looks complicated and boring, get this book NOW.

Totally Nifty Cool
I've been looking for a book like Quilt Sensations since I started quilting. The projects are fun colorful and incredibly creative. Most of them are "playable" with hidden pockets and surprise messages and all of the quilts are a pleasure to look at. The authors focus mostly on texture and tend to avoid anything where you have to have a perfect stich and they give a lot of lee way in the instructions so the quilt can be made truly unique. The projects vary from super easy to more challanging. My only complaints were that a couple of the instructions weren't the best and I had to read them a over before my mind went "Oh!" and that some of the fabric the authors used can be rather expensive. All told this is one of my favorite quilt books ever and I wish there were more books like it out there.

A Feel Good Book With a Moral
My son and I have read this book many times, over and over, and it does not loose its "feel good" effect. The message is obvious, dealing with the propagation of kindness, and is presented at a level that children understand and appreciate. Those who have criticized its "execution", either are without children or can not appreciate the fun children have with such a style. My family finds this book to be a delightful gem.

Great book
David Thompson has done it again. "Blood Feud" is the 26th book in the Wilderness series. I have read all 26. They all have been good but I believe this is one of the best. I can just see the clan family from Georgia or Arkansas as they speak and the words flow through the pages. As usual Nate King and his family handle everything in mountain fashion. Would recommend this book to anyone who like to read about life and times of the mountain men of long ago.

A remarkable anthology of twenty-four poets
The Franconia, New Hampshire, farm of the American poet Robert Frost was turned into a museum and center for poetry and the arts in 1976. From that time, "The Frost Place" has been annual event wherein an emerging poet has been invited to spend the summer living in the house where Frost once lived and wrote some of his greatest poetry. The Breath Of Parted Lips: Voices From The Robert Frost Place, Volume One is a remarkable anthology of twenty-four poets, each of whom won that honor of a summer's residency and document the success of the original concept as a means of generating outstanding poetry while nurturing the poet's muse in the rooms and views that were once the inspiration of the great Robert Frost. Poem At 40: Windwashed--as if standing next to the highway,/a truck long as the century sweeping by,/all things at last bent in the same direction./An opening, as if all/the clothes my ancestors ever wore/dry on lines in my body:/wind-whipped, parallel with the ground,/some sleeves sharing a single clothespin/so that they seem to clasp hands,/seem to hold on.//And now that I can see/up the old women's dresses,/there's nothing but a filtered light./And now that their men's smoky breath/has traversed the earth,/it has nothing to do with them./And now that awkward, fat tears of rain/slap the window screen,/now that I'm naked too,/cupping my genitals, tracing with a pencil/the blue vein between my collar bone and breast,/I'll go to sleep when I'm told.

Classic Thai Cuisine

The best Thai cookbook, with an education thrown in.
This was my 8th Thai cookbook, when I thought it unlikely there was much else for me to learn.

Little did I know! The book is laid out beautifully, with (mostly) one recipe to a page. There are no photographs, but the gorgeous illustrations by Helen Semmler more than make up for them. Each recipe is preceded with a short, instructive commentary.

The recipes themselves ... if you are the type of person who, when in a new restaurant, will look for a dish you are not familiar with and smile broadly when told: "Oh, you wouldn't like that," then you MUST track down a copy of this book. There are more unusual and unique dishes, and new tastes, in this slim volume than in all the rest of my Thai cookbooks together.

This is my textbook when I teach Thai cuisine. I used to feel like an impostor when Thai natives would sometimes take my class - not any more! I just lead off with "Nam Prik Kai Kem" (relish of salty duck eggs with fresh vegetables - it might take you several years to acquire a taste for it) to establish my credentials.

Especially interesting are the primitive dishes, like Gaeng Som Pla Tua Fak Yaew (sour orange curry with snake beans), that date from before chilies were introduced to Thailand by the Portuguese. It is fascinating to make some of the historical dishes completely authentically -- without chilies and using only pepper for heat.

One particular Royal Thai appetizer, Saeng Wa Gung Pao, aptly described by Mr. Thompson as: "the quintessence of good Thai food," is the single finest dish I have ever made - well worth the trouble of tracking down the ingredients. Royal Thai cuisine is not yet well known in America, which is a crying shame. One Royal Thai recipe that I haven't yet tried, Kao Chae (perfumed rice with garnishes) lists 61 ingredients!

Mr. Thompson's more familiar dishes, like the Red, Green, and Mussaman curries, are also several cuts above the norm. No canned curry pastes here! However, that brings up another thought: this is not an everyday cookbook for production-line family meals. For all the accolades I'm heaping on it, I find I use the book infrequently. When I NEED to make a meal, I usually turn to canned pastes and something like Charmaine Solomon's book. When I choose to take an entire day to play in my kitchen, I reach for my mortar and pestle, and this book.

A final note: Amazon has this David Thompson mixed up with the prolific writer of Westerns, so the link on this page to "an interview with David Thompson," if followed, will not teach you anything about Thai cuisine.
