The choices we need to make over the next 25 years
This is an important albeit not uncontroversial contribution to the field of international political economy. The book tries to answer the question whether the world capitalist system is in crisis and the paths available for future world development. The works are firmly located within the world system thesis expounded by Wallerstein in many of his previous works.

The book intoruduces the concept of 6 vectors within which future paths can be examined. These are the inter-state system; world production; world labour force; human welfare; cohesion of states; and the structures of knowledge.

The book displays the weaknesses inherent in the world system thesis. These include overstating the degree of integration of the economies of the world and thus not taking into account the emergence of "non-states" run either by armed bandits or by organised crime.

The book does not deal adequately with the current state of the state. Given the debate around MNCs and their increasing expansion into areas which were the domain of the state this is an issue needing serious appraisal.

The depiction of this era as being a post US hegemonic era is also an area which will be contested by many writers, not least of all the Fukuyama's of the world.

Wallerstein concludes that the future depends onm how the following factors develop: * the extent to which there is loyalty to citizenship;

* the level of security through police order; the extent to which military orders are maintained; * level of welfare especially in relation to health and food distribution; * stability of religious institutions.

A wonderful reference book
I bought this book as a registered nurse that is fairly new to the critical care field, and the first night I had it, it came in handy. By reading a few pages before going to work about being a "detective" to find out the cause of changes in a pt's condition, I was able to avert a more serious complication. I enjoyed the narrative descriptions by nurses in various settings of the critical care field, how the situations were handled, and how they could have improved them. I highly recommend this book not only for the veteran nurse, but for all the new nurses out there!! It will better your thinking skills, and improve your care overall!!

Best Gift for someone with rheumatoid arthritis!
If you have rheumatoid arthritis, or if a friend or loved one has been diagnosed with this disease I highly recommend this book as an invaluable source of information. Not only is it packed with facts on rheumatoid arthritis ranging from details of exactly what is happening in the joints and the immune system to useful Web sites to keep up on the latest details on new medications and treatment approaches, it is also clearly and beautifully written. It really is a handbook to help readers make informed decisions with their physcians. Included as well are fascinating insights into possible future treatments now in the research stage - from the use of stem cells to gene therapy.
This is the best gift you can give a friend who suffers from RA.

Superb text for the undergrad studying constitutional law
These two texts (paired with another edition covering civil liberties) provide a solid foundation for those just beginning to learn about constitutional law and the history of the Supreme Court's interpretation of the Constitution. Each chapter flows nicely from case-to-case with ease, and the student can clearly see the progression of certain areas of constitutional law. I used this series of texts in 2 undergraduate classes, and this book and its companion will remain on my bookshelf.

Embrace of the Daimon
This book was fantastic, complex and intriguing. It was difficult at first to understand the imagery and where the author was going with such a graphic description. Lately I have been aware that our society has been inundated with subtle imagery of sex and violence, but this book helped me embrace the true personal significance of that imagery, particularly if it is reoccurring. It is avery personal book that allows you to read it from the perspective that it is the author's story, yet still gain so many insights about yourself, even if you can only relate to glimpses of the account. I think the book is appropriate for anyone who is on a journey of self-awareness and discovery and looking for answers for some sexual or violent imagery. This book can help take those images and place them in the context of your own experience and enable you to open up to them in a very positive and useful way. They go from disturbing nightmares to acceptable thoughts. Highly recommeded for all those on a path to a higher self.
