GORGEOUS BOOK!!!!!!!!
"Rita Hayworth A Photographic Retrospective" is such an amazing
book it's hard to put into words.I'm a huge Rita Hayworth fan
and for a photo book of Rita to come out is a dream come true!
Caren put this book together perfectly as only a true Rita fan
could! Rita in technicolor is a real treat to behold! The photos
really speak for themself-The candids photos really show the
real woman behind the "image".

This truly is the most GORGEOUS photo book I've ever seen!!!
Anyone will love this book-If you love the golden age of
hollywood you'll love this book or if you just love photo books
this is a book you would enjoy!

Thanks for the Amazing book Caren!

Va-Va-Va VOOM! Hubba-hubba! Wowzer-wowzer! Bong!
"Rita Hayworth: A Photographic Retrospective" features a zillion photographs, many never before published, of one of Hollywood's most enduring sexual icons.

The book was a labor of love for author, historian and collector Caren Roberts-Frenzel of Minneapolis, who reportedly kept pestering publishers for years to get their attention.

"But you're wrong, Rita has not been forgotten," was her mantra, as skeptical publishers elsewhere wondered aloud if a market remained for a book about one of the great beauties of the 1940s.

Caren's persistence finally paid off, resulting in one of the most luxurious "picture on every page" books ever produced, supplemented by breezy, well-written and information-packed text.

Unlike "been there, done that" books about Hayworth, this one specializes in numerous "candids," that is, unposed photos taken outside of the studio, at work, at play, on the set, whatever.

For once, here's a volume that doesn't feature the same darn publicity photos you've seen a million times for sale on the Internet or at flea markets.

The deal about Rita is man oh man, unlike sexy sirens named Grable or even Monroe, Hayworth's beauty is timeless and undated. Unless someone told you, you'd never know, for example, that her world famous pinup shot -- taken on the bed by Life Magazine photographer Bob Landry -- was shot more than 60 years ago!

The same holds true for the nearly 300 other photos that grace this book, some recaptured in all of their Technicolor glory.

Get "Rita Hayworth: A Photographic Retrospective," before it disappears! I understand only a few thousand were printed and yet the reviews in the papers and in places like People Magazine have been terrific.

Rita Hayworth: A Photographic TREASURE!!!
Rita Hayworth is one of the most beautiful and glamourous women ever to have lived. Though her life was marked by tragedy, particularly her Alzheimer's affliction and death at a relatively young age. This book, however, is mainly devoted to celebrating Rita's happier times. Her life is viewed chronologically in both popular and rare photographs. There are so many beautiful photos that it is difficult to take in all at once! My favorite pictures (and just a sampling of the pictures you will find in this book) are: Rita (when she was still Margarita) with her dark hair dancing in a beautiful ruffled dress (p.28), glamourous Rita smiling brightly while reclining on a couch (p.87), Rita clowning with Orson Welles (pg. 114), Rita getting her hair touched up (p. 119), Rita tickling her daughter Rebecca (p. 126), Rita walking solitarily on the beach (p. 140), Rita being welcomed home (p. 165), and Rita in 1981, in declining mental health, but still looking every inch a movie star. If you love Rita and her movies, do not hesitate to buy this book!!!

gripping, compelling story of the horrors of war
As a former member of Robert Roth's platoon 1056 at Parris Island, I relived the sorrows and pain experienced while in Viet Nam. Truly a book which has missed it's place along side those which are now epic movies in their own right. Robert Roth or "Abi" as the Drill Instructors called him, has inspired a book which reflects his emotion, feelings, and intelligence. A must read for the Viet Vet searching for something, which for most of us, is unattainable. An informative book for the younger reader in search of understanding.

The most haunting retrospect of it's genre that I have seen.
This book has had a profound impact on my view of the war in Vietnam. Written from the perspective of "One who was there", I have been a part of the author's experience. No other book to date has had the same impact. I sense the truth in it's pages. The author has "been there". Truly one book that the reader of Vietnam War history should read. Thank you Robert Roth, Not only for your service to the United States of America, but to the world, for your portrayal of the involvement of our troops in this time of war and of the personal perspective that so truly states the feelings of the marine involved. Clearly a masterpiece.

Great book of the War in Southeast Asia
This book is one of the all-time great books about the Vietnam War. Read it if you want a real inside look into the USMC fighting in Vietnam. I have served in the Army over ten years now, and I still believe this book captures the true feelings of service to God and Country.

Definitely Helpful
I like Sade T. found this book to be helpful in understanding what my friends and family have been going through and can only hope that it will lead to more compassion as we all conitune on our journey. I have five friends who had/have cancer before they were 28. Reading Lisa's book really helped to ease the anger of seeing people being sick so young and put the focus back onto faith.

Lisa you have inspired me to give something back. I am forming a team for our local "Relay for Life 2000" team event to fight cancer. This is a major fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. I encourage other supporters and survivors to look for an event in their area.

We all face challenges in our lives, some more difficult than others, but with courage, hope and faith we can all become a little better because of them. Lisa proved that in her book. Read it and see what it can do to help you.

Lisa Shaw-Brawley is honest and direct.
One word...amazing!

I have not had cancer myself, however I have many friends and family members who have both won their battle with cancer and some that have lost. I thought I understood what they were going through, not until I read Lisa Shaw-Brawley's book did I realize just how little I knew about their struggles.

I found this book educational and surprisingly, though I never thought I would describe a book on cancer as such, but also a love story.

For such a young woman, being diagnosed with Hodgkin's, Lisa at only 24 is a very centered and determined young woman. In the very early stages of her treatment she made choices about her journey through cancer that meant the difference between living and dying. With determination to fight her way back to a body free of cancer, along the way Lisa helped those around her deal with all of their confusion and fear of a disease that came into their lives with a thunder and changed them forever.

Have faith in God, trust in your doctors, love and support from family and friend and a will to survive, is what Lisa said got her through to where she is today. I cried for her and rejoiced for her and along the way was lost in this book that I could not put down. I have a greater understanding and admiration for what my friends and family members went through because of "Only When I Sleep".

Thank you Lisa for writing this book.

Courageous..Loving..From the heart!
Lisa Shaw-Brawley's newly released book "Only When I sleep....My family's journey through Cancer" is a tearful and heart warming look at a family's struggle and challenge as they all face cancer.

As a breast cancer survivor this book speaks realistically to the many layers a person experiences when dealing with this disease. Cancer does not just affect the patient, it's effects run through family, friends and those aquatinted with the person.

Information and education will assist a person in the struggle which must be faced when hearing the words, "You have cancer". Lisa's book addresses the fear, challenges, and medical procedures which she faced and how she and her family survived.

The joy is in the ending, but you'll have to read the book to receive that blessing.

The Bible of Transit Interpretation
This book is a must for your astrological reference library. Written by the world's greatest living astrologer, Robert Hand, and Charles A. Jayne, it is an invaluable "cookbook" of transit interpretation for the budding professional astrologer-to-be. As a professional astrologer myself, an astrology teacher and a contemporary of Hand's, I would venture to say from my own personal experience, that virtually every professional astrologer in the past two decades has cut their teeth on this book. Hand is learned, profound, and sometimes downright uncanny in his interpretations. As I recall, he wrote this book in collaboration with Jayne, while Saturn was transitting his third house. This transit would be a classic for giving someone the discipline it takes to write something as tedious yet invaluable, as this book. It IS the Bible of transit interpretation.

Planets in Transit: Life Cycles for Living
Although this book is written in a format of an astrological cook-book, the text is excellent and this makes it an absolute astrological BIBLE! Robert Hand has done it again! As usual, this book also confirms his in-depth knowledge of the stars and his original insight. Well-written and easy to read - a must for every serious student of astrology.

change anyone ?
Is your life at this moment in time in a state of upheaval ? Then I bet you have major aspects in fixed signs. Saturn is making his last transit through Taurus (next trip is in 2028) and upsetting some applecarts along the way.

Learning about the transits of Saturn and Uranus has helped me analyze my life and has been constructive in dealing with change, making me resilient and adaptable. Robert Hand, who in my opinion is our greatest living astrologer, has in this book (originally published in '76) the definitive interpretations of the transits of sun, moon, and the planets through the houses and by aspect.

I usually focus on Saturn and Uranus, as these are the big daddy planets of change, but the others have their merit too, though the influence is subtler, and Hand's clear, concise and inspired writing and no-nonsense descriptions will help you get a good grip on the meaning of each transit. If you can read and own an ephemeris, this should be the # 1 book to go with it.

The first 3 chapters are short. One on interpretation, one on timing, and a case history of Nixon and Watergate. The rest of the book is devoted to aspect interpretation...477 pages of some very enlightening information, written by the best of the best.

Bringing high-tech down to earth
Fresh out of engineering school, Zack Zaremba quickly loses any idealistic notion of pursuing his profession as a creative activity at International Instruments. He fights gallantly against a thousand obstacles and betrayals perpetrated by bosses, bureaucrats and the system in general, as well as his own weaknesses. But through crushing disappointments and small triumphs, he learns about himself and how to live his life. Along the way you'll meet a gallery of memorable characters populating this demimonde, and laugh out loud as Grossbach deftly plays each one's foibles against the next.

Grossbach is a gifted and knowledgeable storyteller who weaves a tale rich in sensitively drawn characters, ironic twists and turns, and authentic detail. A satirical, disturbing and yet compelling glimpse into the basement below technology's ivory tower.

No shortage of laughs!
When I picked up this book I was a little leery of how funny the portrayal of life at a big government contractor could be. After many chuckles, and a few out-loud guffaws, I have been converted. Although I work in a technical industry, it is easy to get caught up in the day-to-day nonsense so pervasive today. What a refreshing reminder of how idiotic many policies and procedures can appear to someone new and fresh out of school. As I was reading the book, I felt I knew the characters at International Instruments, having worked with real people very much like those portrayed by Mr. Grossbach. I could also relate to many of the bureaucratic practices described so humorously in A Shortage of Engineers. Mr. Grossbach's sometimes dry, sometimes not-so-dry sense of humor was captivating and held me to the last page. This is one of those (rare) books that made me feel sad when the book ended. I will miss my glimpses into Zack's life and regret having no more opportunities to celebrate the ironies of the workplace with him. I am thankful to have some of my Holiday shopping decided, because several of my relatives will be getting a copy of A Shortage of Engineers in their stockings. But please, don't spoil their surprise!

Funny as in "HAHAHAHA!"
It didn't take long for me to read this novel. I was surprised because the idea of reading a story about engineers didn't really strike me as "interesting." However, when I found out that Robert Altman was doing his next film based on this novel ("Voltage", which at the moment is on hiatus), I decided to check it out. Boy am I glad I did! It's hilarious! I mean, I laughed my butt off on practically every page of the book! Robert Grossbach is VERY good with dialogue, sarcasm, dry humor, and so on. Very much embraces the way the engineer thinks (I know many guys like the ones described here). Actually, if one were to compare the humor to that of the film, "Office Space," I'd say it's very close, if not, even more laughable.

I love the way this novel exposes the total absurdity caused by workplace bureaucracy, politics, etc. All of the characters are so fascinating and real. Similar to Catch-22 in the sense that none of the policies make any sense, none of workers really care to follow the management's rules, so much complacency and such a rude awakening for a young man entering the workforce three weeks after graduating from college. It's enough to embitter someone for a lifetime.

Some examples that set off "out-loud laughter" are Zack's Urinary Styles and Strategies, Shopper Jim's rules of the workplace, aside from all the other incredible idiosyncrasies that all the characters possess. I especially snicker at the way the author describes dressing style of one of the female characters, Lilah. Florescent-colored dresses? My God! For a story set in the late 80s, it's perfect! Still these facets are just a tip of the iceberg.

A few issues that made me wonder was 1) Is it true that most guys are as horny and so quick to fantasize and physically react to beautiful women as the main character in this book, Zack Zaremba? I had to consult my husband on this one and he said "Not really," although I now wonder if HE was telling the truth...and 2) Other than the constant horniness, Zack seemed to be rather mature for a 22-23 year-old male. But hey, maybe I just didn't know any mature 22-year-old males in my lifetime!

The preceding issues aside, this novel is still very entertaining and disillusioning all at the same time, but never depressing. Very much like the character of Shopper Jim, it's written in a manner that's not meant to be taken too seriously, you could cry at the total absurdity of the engineer's world, or you could just laugh...and laugh...and laugh!

Honest, informative and moving
As far as I know, this is the only book specifically about the rare and mysterious pervasive developmental disorder known as Childhood Disintegrative Disorder (or Heller's Syndrome), in which children lose previously acquired skills and develop the symptoms of autism after several years of apparently normal development.

With an introduction by autism expert Fred Volkmar, the book presents the stories of eight families of children with CDD, including the editor's own son Thomas, and Jordan Schulze (the subject of his father Craig's book "When Snow Turns to Rain"), as they struggle to cope with and find an explanation for their children's devastating regression.

Hopefully, this book will increase awareness of the under-diagnosed condition and let other families know that they are not alone.

It was an excellent book.
This book was fantastic. I stayed up all night to finish it, because I got so involved. I am giving this a 5-star review because I absolutely believe it deserves one. I think these families have been through a lot with their children that have CDD/autism. It was well-written, and interesting to read.

This book kept me on the edge of my seat.
This book was very interesting, and it kept me on the edge of my seat. I wanted to yell out to these families that it would be okay, we would get through this. Obviously, I could not do that. However, I am giving this book 5 stars, and I am saying this to all of them: Keep calm, one day someone will find a cure. That's how this world works. I recommend this book to anyone interested in learning about children with mental handicaps. It is one of the best I have read.

Past Through Tomorrow Future History Stories

An insightful collection of possibilities and yearnings
... and incredibly out of print. I found this book in a big pile of sci-fi books including Frank Herbert, Pohl, Asimov, etc. Together with it, there was Stranger in a Strange Land, and they were both the best in the pile :). My girlfriend was also a sci-fi fan: I got the 'Stranger' and she got the 'Past' in the idea that we'll share them. Unfortunately, when we separated I had read only half of the anthology. Since then, my first question to every clerk in every used book shop I enter is: "Do you have Heinlein's 'Past through Tomorrow?'"

It's a possible set of improbable future events from the perspective of a writer interested in equal measure in the well-being of the human society and in the development of the individual. It avoids paradoxes pragmatically, by applying them to themselves in amusing Turtle vs. Rabbit solutions; it's full of no-nonsense characters who are excellent role models and passive educators. Like most of Heinlein's work that I read, it's spanning the spectrum of emotions from hysterical laughter to the occasional tear. The technology depicted may get outdated, but the juice of humanity that Heinlein injected in all his work will always remain a wish and hope for the future.

It tied me to a chair in an office for the few precious hours before I had to return the book to my ex-girlfriend. I wonder why nobody reprints it: look at all the good marks it gets!!!

The definitive Heinlein - best explanation of his "world"
This actually was the first Heinlein book I read, recommended to my by a friend. After reading this outstanding "timeline" of his Future History, ranging from Time Line to Methuselah's Children, I was hooked! Since reading this book about ten years ago, I embarked on a quest to acquire all of Heinlein's fiction work. RAH is far and away my favorite author; a major regret in my life is that he died before I discovered his works. I think that after reading all of his books that I've found (I think I have them all), that this book is the best collection of his work ever done - much better than Expanded Universe. This book does a wonderful job outlining his Future History, especially if it contains the graphical timeline of the stories and how they fit into his "reality". If you read this book, all of the other books (except Stranger in a Strange Land, maybe) fit into the pattern and this explains and helps tie them all together. I read this book so many times over the last ten years that it has fallen apart! I am searching for a new copy to replace it. I DEFINITELY recommend this book!

This is a good book!
Robert Heinlein is best known for his novels like Starship Troopers, Stranger in a Strange Land, Friday, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, etc. I list of his great novels being too long to list here.

But he started out writing short stories in Astounding Science fiction (later to be renamed Analog) for John W. Campbell, Jr. This book contains what is called Heinleins Future History stories. Many of his novels fit into this future history as well. But it all began with the short story "Life-line", which was first published in 1939. Is it a great story? By itself, we probably wouldn't call it a great story. But it was the first by RAH.

Follow-up short stories like "The Roads Must Roll", "Blowups Happen", "Requium", "The Great Hills of Earth", "The menace from Earth" and "Methuselahs Children" are all also included here. All great short stories set in the Future History.

This book does have a little overlap with Heinlien's later Expanded Universe collection, but it isn't a lot. Both are worth reading, and re-reading.

Heinlein was made the first Grand Master of SF by the Science Fiction writers of America. An honor that this book shows him to be well deserving of.

Highly recommended book.

Perfect for a baby-sitter
From the moment that Darcy set her eyes on the three foster kids, she knew that baby-sitting would not be a "fun" job. Even though the pay was twice her rate, was only for a few hours a day, and Darcy was an experienced baby-sitter, she didn't count on the mysterious things that started happening at the children's house after she took the job. She did everything a good baby-sitter was supposed to do. She didn't let the stranger saying he was from the gas company into the house, and she called the police when the house alarm went off in the middle of the afternoon. All of a sudden, a strange thing happens, and now it is up to Darcy to rescue the foster kids and herself from three dangerous kidnappers.

This book is full of suspense. That's why it's interesting to read. Once you start reading you can't stop. You just keep on turning the pages. Will Darcy be able to save herself and the kids? If you want to find out, read the book and get caught up in the great adventure with Darcy and the three kids.

It's a great book and very exciting!
I liked this book because everytime you turn around something exciting happens! The characters are fit for the book.I liked the main character, Darcy, because in the end she is very brave. This book has exciting, mischievious characters. The baby-sitter,Darcy Stevens, gets interviewed at this "high-quality" house. She gets the job and finds out that the children are pests! The second day as she was finishing making lunch ,when all of the sudden the burgular alarm went off!The police come and search, but there's no one around. The police leave and a few minutes later... If you want to know what happens you'll have to read on!So hurry up! It's to exciting to wait!

Incredible!!!!!!!!!
This is one of my favorite books. I don't usually enjoy this type of book but there is something about the style of writing that that just made me love it!

Great Story!
The Talking Eggs was a great story! The way the author put the story together was wonderful.Blanche had a mean mother and sister.Poor Blanche had to do all the work. But then she got what she deserved when she met an old woman on the road. I would say that this story was great. I would recommend the book to ages 6 and up.

so interesting to me!
I thought this book was so good because it was full of surprises, magical happenings,it was funny too. I was glad Blanche found someone to love her. She deserved it. And as for the sister and the mom, they got what they deserved too.I first heard this story when I was five and I still love it now that I am seven.Every kid would love it!!!!!!!

Beautifully written, beautifully illustrated.
This is a charming little folktale about two sisters Ð one mean and greedy, the other generous and kind Ð and their encounter with a strange, magical old woman. In the end, the good sister is rewarded and the bad one punished. A nice story with a good message.

But this isnÕt just a nice book, it is an extraordinary one. One thing that makes it special is the way the author uses language. Robert San Souci draws on an African American storytelling tradition and a southern rural dialect that just makes the language sing! The book is full of wonderful, poetic lines and great rhythmic language. ItÕs a joy to read aloud. The words feel good in your mouth. And any parent or teacher who reads aloud a lot knows what a rare quality that is. Even when IÕm tired, I feel like I canÕt read this book badly. The words just flow.

And the illustrations are gorgeous. Jerry Pinkney is one of the best illustrators around and this is one of my favorites of all his work. The composition, the subtle colors, the intricate detail Ð you rarely come across art this fine in childrenÕs books.

I bought this book for my daughter a couple of years ago, and weÕre still reading it over and over again. ItÕs so good, I hope in a generation sheÕll still be reading it to my grandchildren.
