Fabulous account of how the Kruger National Park evolved
This book is the facintaing story of the birth of the Kruger National Park in South Africa. Set at the turn of the last century it charts the epic struggle of how one man changed the hearts of a nation which had hitherto treated wild animals only for sport.

The regular encounters with lions and other wild animals add extra excitement. This book must be read by anyone who has an interest in conservation or african wildlife.

A great cartoon book, and a great Halloween story!
Since I first stumbled across this book at Halloween when my daughter was 5, we have gotten it out of the library as a Halloween tradition every year. It's been 4 years now, and I don't think we'll be losing interest any Halloween in the next few years!

It's a bit truly scary, and absolutely hilarious! We love it.

Great Mind-Bogglers
This book is really neat for those of you trying to boggle yourmind with brain puzzles. One of my favorites is "If King Midassits on gold, who sits on silver?" (You'll have to figure that out on your own) Anyway, it is very funny and makes you laugh at yourself when you see the answers to some!

loved it
We brought this book home three days ago, and our two year old has asked to have it read to him (or recited by memory as he's going to sleep) at least 30 times. And believe it or not, I'm not tired of it. When Mary Ann and Louie can't fall asleep, Grandpa tells them a tale of his exciting adventures when he couldn't sleep as a boy -- one that surprisingly put them to sleep (and also works on my son). Features sharks, polar bears, walruses, dragons, crocodiles, running uphill, swimming the ocean, and flying via hurricane. One of the best children's books I've ever read (and reread and reread and reread and reread).

Loveable Curmudgeon
Another winner in the "Worst" series, James Stevenson's hilarious tales of the cranky anti-Pollyanna known as "The Worst." The humor is suitable for ages 3 to 11 or so; he's one of those authors who can write to many levels (including adults). Leaving town because of a Harvest Festival next to his house, the Worst hops into his 1959 Edsel to get away it all:

"The polka band was rehearsing: When they paused, the worst stepped forward.
'Do you take requests?' said the worst.
'What would you like to hear?' said the leader.
"Total silence!' said the worst.
'I don't believe we know that one..."

After begrudgingly paying a quarter at a $2.50 toll booth ("that's an outrage"), the worst "arrives a few days later in Florida....palm trees swayed in the wind, people splashed in the surf...'I don't know how anybody can stand this place'", said the worst.

He takes the worst possible hotel ("Worstmor"; which is probably also the cheapest), and amongst the frogs and bats, the broken door, and the dirty pool, he finds someone almost as cranky as he is-A long lost relative: "Well, don't expect any special rates...just because you're a relative." As usual, the worst softens a little upon his return home, and even donates a little something to the crafts booth.

It's unfortunate that so many of Stevenson's books are out of print or difficult to find. His sly humor is accompanied by superb ink and watercolor drawings that the Worst probably wouldn't like: They're colorful and slightly whimsical. Check out some other books by the prolific Stevenson, you'll find much to love. 30 pages, with at least one drawing on each page.

Great children's read aloud.
A hysterically funny book about the witch Emma (about whom James Stevenson has written various other books) and her struggles to prove to the other witches that she is not a complete failure as a witch. In this book she and her friends manage to disgust even the meanest of the other witches while creating a "potion" full of all sorts of disgustingly amusing ingredients. The story ends with a delightful twist, and is a really fun book to read aloud to children.

I am not going to get up today
I am not going to get up today is an exciting, silly story. It is about a boy who doesn't want to get up for school, and he swears that nothing in your wildest imagination will get him up. Seuss, the author, has some crazy ideas as to what would normally wake people up, but in this case, nothing will make this imaginative child get out of bed.

This is a MUST HAVE
There's got to be a starting point to reading with your child and this should be the place. All my kids loved this book, it has humor they instantly identify with and are always entertained by. They never get bored with this one.

Book Review
This book uses very good discriptions, it also rymes and the illistrations go along with the the words good. It makes you keep reading and reading because the words are discriptive. I would suggest this book to all kids.

Engaging! Hilarious! Great fun!
Jack Prelutsky's A Pizza The Slice of the Sun is the talk of my reading classes! The poems are a terrific way to engage my remedial readers' thinking skills while tickling their funny bones -- even on a bad day! They look forward to the silly, creative ways Mr. Prelutsky looks at life, and often ask for an extra "listening skills" activity just to get to hear another round of silly poems. We often use the Random House Book of Poetry for Children edited by Prelutsky and Lobel as well. Another classic sure to put a grin on everyone's face! Who says poetry has to be boring?!? A definite MUST HAVE for any classroom library!

The funniest poems ever.
A pizza the size of the sun, has some of the best poems that I have ever read. Although the best one is the main one. It is the pizza the size of the sun. Even though the poems are for younger kids they are great for all ages. If you like poems you should pick up a copy of this book. I recommend this book for anyone who loves poems. Jack Prelutsky could'nt have writen this book any funner.

My Daughter Loved It!
Young girls budding on becoming teenagers are hard to please...but this book did it.

My 10 year old loved the book and I frequently enjoy hearing her read it to her younger sibling.

I feel it teaches children as they are reading it. Not only does it teach them poetry and poems, it also teaches them it is ok to have fun in life...a difficult concept for serious children.

I would recommend this book to those who have children who enjoy reading and need help in prioritization.

Hooper Humperdink... Not Him (Bright & Early Books , No 22)
Published in Hardcover by Random House (Merchandising) (1999)
Authors: Dr. Seuss, James Stevenson, and Dr Seuss
Amazon base price: $7.99

Poor Hooper Humperdink
It was alright of a book. I thought it was kind of sad how the narrator did now want to invite Hooper but invited everyone else from A to Z. It was pretty cute how they went through the alphabet when naming the kids who were invited. In the end he ends up having a change in heart and invites Hooper Humperdink. I liked the illistrations, they were very colorful and detailed. If your younger sibling or child is learning the alphabet, then this is the book to read to them.

Great book for children
I have an autistic child, with a limited vocabulary. He was given his first copy of this book when he was three. Since then we have worn one copy out and are starting on our second copy. It has help him with his speech, maybe because we read it almost every night. He will come to me and ask for Hooper, which he calls the book, and every time we come to the word Hooper he will say it. He dearly loves this book and I happen to know that my great-neice and nephew also like this book. I think that this is because of its ryhming qualities. I feel that this book is one of the better books ever written by Dr. Seuss for children.

The Silliness of Seuss Plus a Valuable Lesson
Although [advertised] for ages 4-8, my wife and I started reading this and other Seuss books to our children from 6 months on. We started a great habit of reading two or three Seuss books before bed, and the kids loved them. Soon, they would memorize many of the phrases, beginning a lifelong passion for reading.

Every kid should experience reading Hooper Humperdink while growing up. Hooper Humperdink..? Not Him! combines the zaniness of other Seuss books with a lesson about excluding others. Around ages 4+, kids begin to divide the world into various segments (i.e. boys and girls). This book helps children learn how hurtful excluding someone for being different can be. Combine this with other fun Seuss books and your kids will sit enthralled as you turn the pages. Highly recommended.
