This book does not need to be reviewed.
People familiar with studies of the Plains Indians and their culture already know that this is the defininitive book on the Cheyennes. The details of their history, culture, and religion are fascinating. However, those just beginning to dabble in this area of study should be warned, it may be more than they are looking for right now. For example, the alliances and warfare between the Cheyenne and other tribes would be very difficult to follow if you didn't already know a little bit about who they were and how their migratory paths crossed, etc. Once you've done a fair amount of study on the subject, however, your library will not be complete without it.

Dazzling
Elkin is about as good as it gets when it comes to fiction (modern, postmodern, classical or otherwise), and GM, while not his best (as he claimed) is awfully good. In reading his novels and stories, one needs to simply go with it: there's a kind of quote/unquote dao that's a prerequisite, and you'll need it with GM more than the others. But once you're in the groove of his prose and story you'll be ... well, enchanted is not quite the word for it. Enhanced is probably a better one. While I'd recommend this book highly, I'd also recommend picking up The Franchiser or The Magic Kingdom first. Elkin was one of our very, very best, so you can't really go wrong with any of his titles.

A Comprehensive Study of the Work by George Nelson
Although the book is minimal on color illustrations and its strength relies mainly on its text, contrary of what I had expected, I was very pleased with it. It is a very comprehensive study of the work of Nelson, one of the pioneers of American industrial design, giving more importance to the concepts and the process of design, rather than to the produced objects, buildings and exhibitions themselves. The preface by Ettore Sottssass is equally outstanding, as most of his written works are.

The very best
This is an early Mae West bio, now apparently out of print. It is excellent, and written by two people who knew her fairly well. Great photos. Both authors have passed on from what I understand. It was my introduction into the world of Mae West, and it was life changing. Highly recommended.

A Wonderful Devotional
Rev. Wood brings the Psalms alive with this insightful and spiritually rich commentary on this much loved book of the Bible. Each chapter presents one psalm with full text and insightful and inspirational commentary and illustration. Great series for kids
My children (and their teachers, too!) love the THIRD GRADE DETECTIVES series. Readers learn a lot about how police use science to solve crimes. This series turned one of my children around in science class. Until he started reading the Third Grade Detectives (so far, there are five titles in the series), he was doing poorly in his science studies. Now, he can hardly wait to study science!

In this book, Grant begins by examining the intellectual roots of English-speaking justice, by looking at the ideas of Locke and Kant. After which, he looks into a contemporary version of it, by examining the works of Rawl's magnum opus (A Theory of Justice).
After this brief but lucid discussion of the works above, Grant then show how the liberal conception of justice has fail in delivering its promises of a just society. The reason being technology. Grant, argues that technology has brought about a cybernetic society, i.e., a society which is guided by the calculation of means and ends which can erode the basic premise of liberalism, i.e., liberty of the individual. Thus, Grant argues that liberalism and technology makes strange bedfellows in modern society. On the one hand, we cherish the idea of the autonomy of the individual but on the other we want to reap the fruits of technology which is incompatible with freedom. Thus, we are locked in the horns of delimma between technology and liberty. Which would we choose?
In conclusion, one cannot help but admire the penetrating analysis of Grant's essay on modern society and its discontents. But, at the same time, I wish he would give us an alternative to that of liberalism.
