The Maritime Heritage of the Cayman Islands (New Perspectives on Maritime History and Nautical Archaeology)

The Maritime Heritage of the Cayman Islands
Pirates, naval warfare, ship wrecks and sunken treasure...this book has it all !

While archeology (even the marine variety) can be a dry subject, Roger C. Smith does an excellent and workmanlike job of extensively documenting the maritime history of the Cayman Islands.

As the son, grandson and nephew of a long line of Cayman Island mariners (my ancestors were among the first permanent settlers) I found the documentation of many of the stories told by my elders to be fascinating.

Today the Islands are best known as a tourist destination and a major player in the world of off-shore banking.

This was not always the case. In the distant through relatively recent past the Cayman Islands were a significant supplier of manpower to the regional and even the world maritime industry.

Mr. Smith documents the maritime evolution of the Cayman Islands with extensive research in the Islands and Europe.

Coupling the research with detailed field work and an ability to write in an informative and entertaning fashion results in a GREAT READ.

I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in maritime history, pirates, treasure or the Cayman Islands.

One of the best literary magazines around
Open City consistently publishes great stories, poems, essays, and artwork. I look forward to each issue, because each one is so different, and because this magazine continues to be vital and relevant, esp. because many literary magazines are so staid and dull....

An essential reference for electronics Mfg/Engr/QA folks!
The authors have used real-world measures of quality (=dependability) to define a strategy for improving the TRUE QUALITY of manufacturing output for electronic products and sub-assemblies. If you're involved in electronic design and manufacturing (as I am), chances are your present employer is doing many costly things in the name of Quality that you KNOW are counterproductive. This gem of a book points out a lot of these practices, and provides OBJECTIVE EVIDENCE about how they're bad and why we do them anyway. And if you're like me, this book will also point out a few things you DIDN'T KNOW where counterproductive, too. Reading and studying this book has made me DETERMINED to fight the forces of pseudo-quality that are a growing menace within the company I work for. Wish me luck!

A Look into the mind of a Creative Genius
I purchased this book when I visited Chicago and needless to say, I lucked out in finding it tucked away in its respected shelf.

First thing that made me want to get it was the fact that I worship Scorsese and his impeccable filmmaking abilities. The second and final factor that sealed the deal was that this book wasn't on my shelf. It was a missing link in my anthology of books on film and film history.

This book is as analytical and influential as a book on an admired director like Marty can ever be.It has every film he ever directed, including little bits of info and background on the Armani commercials and music video he's also directed.
The book starts with his very first film he made as a child, "Vesuvius" and ends with the much anticipated "Gangs of New York," due in theatres on Christmas Day. (I will be in the ticket line!)

In a nutshell, this book is fabulous! It should not, by any means, be left out of a film enthusiast's book shelf.

Seasons on the Pacific Coast
Seasons on the Pacific Coast takes the reader by the hand - with childlike delight - to show us the stunning natural diversity of this vibrant shoreline world. To me, a gentle tone and wealth of scientific information make Seasons a volume to savor for the casual visitor or native naturalist. Tweit presents short, engaging profiles of individual species which, taken together, tell the larger story of "connection that binds humans and wild lives everywhere". Rather than preaching conservation, she instead encourages us to look at Seasons as a "family album", renewing our sense of kinship with a whole coast of fascinating characters. I particularly love the exquisite watercolor illustrations that highlight each chapter. It's a lovely read.

Walt Whitman is a talented, visionary writer!
This book is highly entertaining and quaint, and it also teaches acceptance and peace through example. With views that even today are still evolving in America, Whitman almost seems to have written this book in 2050, and just slipped it back in time for us to read now.
