The best short essay work I have seen on this subject
In line with much of the new non-fiction surveys and studies, the book, in short essays gives the picture on much information that I have not seen before on the Gold Rush and the aftermath. In particular it gives a reader a chance to compare the Internet investment frenzy with the Gold Mine stocks frenzy in the 1860s & 70s.

The information is concise and beautifully and fascinatingly written.

I LIKED THE WAY THE CHARACTERS WERE DEVELOPED.
MY HUSBAND IS FROM THE AREA THE BOOK WAS ABOUT AND IT REALLY MADE A DIFFERENCE. I COULD PICTURE THE CHARACTERS AND THE DIALOGUE WAS VERY TRUE TO THE AREA. IT WAS FASCINATING TO LEARN THE HISTORY OF THE AREA THROUGH SUCH REAL PEOPLE.

Well Done Compendium of Medical Ethics/Mod. Christian View
Coming from a moderate-to-liberal Protestant Christian position (both authors are from Union Theological Seminary of Twin Cities), this book presents an intro to the field of medical ethics.

This was included in required reading list of grad. course on bioethics, and thus provides adequate overview of the subject matter.

Although more conservative Christians will not agree with many of the ethical statements, this certainly provides a view for where many are coming from in this growing field of importance. The views on abortion are slanted towards pro-choice, however most of the time seeks to present a balanced opinion.

One of my areas of interest is an example of such balance, the area of informed consent,e.g. "We distort the larger issues of human research when we absolutize either side of the question-means or ends, present or future, individual or society. There is undeniable truth on both sides. We are on better ground if we pose the question in terms of responsibility. The researcher is responsible to the welfare of the subjects of the experiment. Their free humanity cannot be violated without impunity. The researcher is also responsible for the welfare of the larger society. There is potential harm in not doing research as well as risks of doing it. Beyond these affirmations, we who attempt to perceive the world through Christian lenses affirm our responsibility to God."

The Test Yourself series from NTC Learning Works is great!
As an educator, I find that the practice questions provided in the Test Yourself series are an excellent way to study for a test. Practice before "the real thing" helps students focus on the areas where they are weak. These books also help eliviate the stress involved in test taking. Who knows, maybe your teacher has a copy of one of these books and is using it to make up the test questions. ;-)

James Wilson: Founding Father, 1742-1798

Excellent example of Continental Congress deliberations.
The personalities, prejudices and courage of the Founding Fathers come alive in the give and take of the debates of the Continental Congress. We, who can see the results, can little doubt what each of them knew, that they were inspired by a higher power. I feel greatful to be a descendent. Dewey F. Brignone

A self-help book that focuses on learning more about oneself
Written by medical research consultant Virginia Burham in collaboration with psychiatrist William H. Hampton), Knowing Yourself is a self-help book that focuses on learning more about oneself, and using that knowledge and wisdom to improve both one's own lot and that of others. Individual chapters address distinctions in the self between men and women; aspects of sexuality; the workings of the brain; the makeup of personality, and more. A fascinating and involving read that embraces the classic wisdom of Socrates himself when he said, "Know thyself, for once we know ourselves, we may learn how to care for ourselves, but otherwise we never shall.", Knowing Yourself is an especially commended addition to Self-Help/Self-Improvement reading lists.

Creepy!
This book was a thrill to read. I just love it when I get my hands on a scary story that stands the hair up on the back of my neck. You'll be checking the closet before you go to bed at night (and under the bed). Don't read this when you are home alone -- although, I found it hard to put down -- even at night. Would love to see this turned into a movie. Please write another one like this James!

The Magdalen Metaphysicals: Idealism and Orthodoxy at Oxford, 1901-1945
Published in Hardcover by Mercer University Press (1985)
Author: James Patrick
Amazon base price: $18.95
Average review score:

Read this Book . It is Excellent.
This is one of the most interesting books I have read in a long time. The main chapters cover C. S. Lewis, R. G. Collingwood, J. R. R. Tolkien, Charles Williams, and J. A. Smith, the teacher of the first two. All of these men were influential, interesting, and taught at Oxford. They were prolific writers and held similar philosophies. The style of James Patrick is worthy of the subject. You will find it well-written, superbly researched, and fun to read. There are in addition a number of nice photographs of the men who appear in the book.
